Need reccomendations for a replacement transmission for a stock 98 EJ22
I have a 98 OBS that currently has a stock EJ22 and stock transmission. I am looking to replace the transmission because the clutch is on its way out and my first and second gears grind if not perfectly rev matched. I am not sure what the gear ratios are for the transmission and rear diff. (If anyone can point me in the right direction to find these specs, would be appreciated.) Can anyone offer me recommendations for a new transmission? I would like something that bolts up to a EJ25 from a (99 Forester?) because I have one sitting around and possibly an EJ20 further down the line. I also know that you need to match the rear diff with whatever transmission you get so you don't break anything. Hopefully someone can offer me some insights. /Thanks

As long as the trans and the diff match ratio any 5 speed should be good. The main choice would be in the gear ratio. Might be some differences in axles but that's pretty much it.

Most NA transmissions were either 4.11 or 4.44 final drive and 1:1 ratio. Any EJ trans will bolt up to the phase 1 block. There will just be some extra unused holes in the bell housing on the trans if you use a newer trans on an older engine. Phase 2 engines have more bolts holding everything together so you may want to consider that if you're eventually going to do turbo engine swap of some sort. What you need to pay attention to is push vs pull type clutch. Make sure you get what matches your current type. It's a pain to switch from one to the other.
