directly swapping an 04 ECU into an 05 will certainly cause it not to start.
And I thought it was just swapping the pins around. GL with tracking down an 04 STI ECU.

well i have a question now. im going to be doing the same thing here in a couple months and i already have all the parts. 05 sti harness and steering column into my bugeye with an 04 sti ecu. so once i bolt everything up and drop the harness in and get everything connected, what happens to the immobilizer wiring on the 05 harness? does the 04 ecu simply have "dead pins" in place of immobilizer pins form an 05+ ecu? also i have the steering column too from the 05 and idk if it is necessary to swap being that i havnt even started this project yet and havnt compared it to my bugeye column, but im noticing the immobilizer box mounted to it. do i just plug it in to the corresponding plugs on the 05 harness and let it fly or will any of this immobilizer wiring/box cause any issues with the 04 ecu?

^^^^other than this, im set thanks

Ideally we'll like to use a clean 04 STi just to keep the options open

if the 04 ecu has ecutek, you can have subaru flash over it, itll wipe the license off it and back to stock full access if you wanted to do open source.

I think cobb ap can also do the same thing as well.

Trying to get in contact with RR this morning, but I get their answering machine.
Will try the junkyard to see aswell.

If all else fails today.....

IHT - perhaps I'll take you up on your offer of borrowing your ecu so we can test/fire up the car till I can get my own.... Mainly, we just want to see if the car will start... For tuning, ecutek/Cobb, I won't be ripping it till it's proper

thanks!

So yeh, I just finish talking to Steve at RR. super friendly and helpful, unfortunately, they don't have one that they can sell...

So it looks like Aldergrove junkyard is the next try to get one for the weekend.....Minifreak is calling them now.

Another option that kinda popped up and might be worth trying is an 04 Forrester XT...2.5L turbo ECU. it should work too, but there are differences that I don't want to mess with...I rather find the 04 Sti ECU instead.

fingers crossed here that Aldergrove has one and won't make me pay up the arse for it. :P

Charles...

#'s on the 04 FXT MT Turbo ECU (the AT ECU is different again, so be careful here)
22611AJ470
22611AJ471
22611AJ472

Price is about the same as the one I quoted you.

thanks steve.

here's what i read the difference being from a forester XT...

You could even use a Forester XT ECU with the only major difference being the gear determination thresholds having only five slots instead of six.

not sure exactly what that means...is he referring to a 5MT to a 6MT difference?

If it's no biggy of a difference, (since I see lots of wrx guys running 6MT on their wrx ecu's)
did you happen to have an used 04 FXT MT turbo ECU at the shop for sale?
Or did you mean "Price is about the same as the one I quoted you" as in at Stealership and their crazy prices?

thanks again,
-C

Sorry for the confusion on my earlier post. I don't have any FXT ECU's for sale, but if you were to find one, dealership or otherwise, the "new" price is about the same as the 04 STI one we talked about on the phone.

As for ECU compatability (WRX, STI, FXT, or otherwise), I'm personally not knowledgable enough on all the differences between them to offer ideas or suggestions.

The Gear Determination threshold is not an issue, I looked at the WRX VS STi maps and the tables are the same size but the values are different.

Default STI and WRX Are Sometimes Different

I know this thread is ten years old, but I read it a dozen times trying to solve my an issue I was working through, so I thought it might be fruitful to someone in the future to know what I learned.

I was trying to get a 2006 WRX 2.5Turbo working in my Factory Five 818 without the immobilizer. I bought a 2004 Forrester XT Turbo MT ECU hoping to move the few pins necessary and get things up and running. After getting the 2004 ECU in hand I started working through the wiring diagrams to figure how which 5 or 6 pins I needed to move, and found that only 5 or 6 pins lined up. It took another day or two of research to figure out that the 2006 WRX Turbo wiring harness is completely different from the 2006 STi wiring harness. The 2004 FXT ECU would work for me, but I would have to heavily modify my engine harness.

Hopefully I can save someone else from buying the wrong ECU down the road.
