Canadian newbie
Hey everyone,
I just bought a 2004 WRX and I can’t wait to start driving it in the snow. I’m not sure what kinds of mods I want to start with but winter tires are a must! If anyone has recommendations on snow tires please let me know. |

General Alitmax Arctic are my favorite followed Hankook Ice conceptz. Both last and have good road manners. The Generals are better when it gets icy.

I like my Bridgestone Blizzak WS80s. Very grippy, been running them for a few years and they’ve been more than up to the challenge of cold Alberta winters.

Blizzak just came out with the WS90's which scored pretty high with car and driver. The WS-80 was rated just under the Michelin X Ice III. I've been hapilly rocking the X Ice III's for about 3 seasons now.
Apparently the WS90 has some new compound that will last another season than the WS80's so I'd look into whichever has any discounts. Otherwise I General Altimax and other cheaper winter tires will work too. I'm sure there's some quality or traction tradeoff when going cheap though. My 2cents. |

Don't let the price fool you. The General Altimax Artic handles our deep Utah snow really well. Out of all the tires I've tried it's the one that never gave me any issues going up the canyon to work. Work at a ski resort so I need to be there regardless of the weather. This tire never let me down. You can put studs in but I never have.

From a fellow Canadian:
Nokian R2/3s if you are on a lot of ice/packed snow. Run Nokians on the Subaru (R2, previously the X-Ice2s which were excellent, but Nokians are better in both ice and snow) and the R3s on the E63s. If in a lot of snow the General Altimax Arctic are excellent. They are just ok on ice compared to the Nokains, but still much better than an all-season. I run the Arctic Altimax on our Jeep Wrangler. Get a block heater and use it. A good snow brush. -40c windshield fluid. The clutch gets heavy/sluggish when uber cold outside. Synthetic oil. My 04 STi is my winter beater and it is a GREAT winter car. |
