'05 STi complete strut units
Howdy folks.
I was going to use these on my old '97 Legacy Outback to lower it and replace the aging originals, sold the car instead. These are clean, 26K original miles, no rust. The only issue is the that threads on one of the front struts were damaged, probably by not getting the nut tight enough at some point. I used a Snap-On cleanup die on it, and the top cm or so has good threads. My plan was to stack hardened washers on top of the tophat to cover the damaged threads, there is plenty of room to get the nut tightened down so it is completely on the good strut threads. There is no reason this shouldn't work just fine, perfectly safe and all. $250 picked up, really don't want to hassle with shipping and it would be expensive. Thanks, Doug P.S. I need to dig them out of the garage to get pics, but the threads are the only issue and a pretty minor one IMHO... Last edited by dvancleve; 04-29-2015 at 01:19 AM. |

Well I was going to have them welded up and re-drill the lower holes and I have some custom machined spacers, but they are/were not a direct bolt-on. Also, to clarify, it is the threads that bolt the strut to the tophat that are damaged but it will not affect function in any way...

I see. Cool cool. I've seen that done a few times. Good luck with the sale. These would be great for a Feal rebuild.
That stud could also be knocked out and replaced with a bolt if anyone is worried. Definitely not a show stopper in the least. |

These are still available, fully assembled now and ready to bolt on. I think $250 is a fair price, let me if you are interested and I can get some pics. Thanks, Doug

I don't want to split them up, but the rears should be about the same as '04s (just not red). Just to clarify, the damage to the front threads doesn't decrease the functionality or make it unsafe in any manner. My suggestion is to buy the set and resell the fronts
Thanks, Doug |

That is true of the hubs/wheels, it doesn't affect the struts though. The 2004 front strut housings are different. The 2005+ can be modified to work (slotted or welded & redrilled with spacers) or the struts can be used in the 2004 housings.

Truth. Well I wouldn't be using the fronts-- my only question is: will I be able to take the entire rear strut assembly off my car and replace it with yours? (without modifying it to make it fit). Because if I have to go through the time swapping the struts out of yours and put them in my old housings then I might as well just buy brand new Monroe replacement struts for $80 each and do less work (and not have front struts for an 05 lying around

In case somebody is interested in STi suspension on a non-STi...
Here are some links I collected when I was scheming to put these on my old '97 Outback.
I planned to replicate what was done is in this tread, starting at post #9: http://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php...223#post186223. I have the rear spacers and camber bolts. Assuming I can find them, they are included. Here is the easiest mod I came across to get STi front struts on a non-STi: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulle...-09-fxt-65674/. There are apparently folks who have put lots of miles on the slot-modded fronts. I also have a set of the spacers shown in this thread (bolt spacing modified by welding), they are also included: http://www.scoobymods.com/showthread...uts-12527.html. Doug |

SOLD
So I did get the hardened washers and get that strut with the damaged threads reassembled, no issues. As I stated previously, the nut is completely on the good threads so I can't think of any reason why it isn't perfectly fine. I just double checked, all those links still work and I think I can still find all of the spacers, camber bolts, etc. I would LOVE to sell these locally, make me an offer! Thanks, Doug P.S. It just occurred to me that somebody might read this who doesn't really know what's different about STi struts. Google is your friend, but they are the super awesome inverted design that is really completely different from any other Subaru struts (that I'm aware of)***8230; Last edited by dvancleve; 01-09-2021 at 10:30 PM. |
