Needed to get into the attic to replace a filter, so I turned on the light in the kid's room. Hit the wrong switch and instead turned on the fan, which proceeded to make a loud electrical buzz, small pop, and no blade movement.
Gather basic tools and climb on bed to disassemble, only to find that the contractor who built the house stripped every single bolt holding the blades on I got 3 blades off, the other 2 were too far gone, even tried an extractor. Ended up having to get a cutoff tool and chop an arm off to slip the trim ring over the remaining arm. Luckily no signs of flames or anything, but now I have to figure out the mislabeled breaker panel, and buy a new fan.

"In the spirit" of this thread, my microwave popped it's fuse this morning. Kinda funny it happened right after I used it. The engineer in me is asking why. But I'll still blindly replace the 20A fuse and see what happens.

Edit: looks like things got a bit spicy

Ooof. Those are scary when you don't know for sure what caused it.

About one every couple of months our dishwasher stops near the end of the cycle. The thermal breaker trips. One it sits for a few min and cools off, it resets and I can restart it.

I've replaced the thermal breaker twice, and the last time I dumped the spade connectors and soldered it to the wires. Alas, it still occasionally does it. Now I don't trust it to run at night and will only run it when we'll be around...just in case.

The more I think about it, probably just shoddy pcb design/materials. This is also a combo air fryer & oven. A normal microwave wouldn't need to run for an hour at a time.

I've pulled control boards out of a regular gas oven that has toasted solder joints from repeated heat cycles. I'll do some troubleshooting at the office and see what I figure out. I bet the trace is just toast where the fuse clip attaches. I do find it amusing they used security torx screws.

Ah yes, I had a trace blow out on a pool timer board once.

Fortunately it was right on the surface of the PCB so was easy to find the two components it connected.

I just soldered in a wire and bypassed the damaged trace and it worked great for years after that.

Garage door openers. Mine is old and seems to be dying. It does not always close, when it doesn't if I hold the wall button it will close. It always closes from the car. So thinking this will need to be replaced soon. I was looking at the wall mount units and wanted to know if anyone had installed one or had any feedback. Looking at the Genie 6172H or the Chamberlain RJ0101.

I have a wall mount. I don't mind it. I am still tracking down some door track related issues that cause it to not always close.

If it always operates from the car, then the opener is likely fine. You may just have a bad wall switch or wire between switch and opener.

haven't done a wall mount (but did have two, now one functioning oddball Wayne Dalton iDrive units)

but I wanted to suggest you get one with built in MyQ via Wifi and a built in battery backup. marginal extra cost for some nice imo features.

We have the my q add on, which has been nice, but yes battery back up will be a must if/when I replace this thing. Which has worked just fine now all day. The key will be to have the wife get frustrated enough with it to really justify replacing it.

Update. Given that was the only visible hot spot, I'm blaming a poor solder joint as the root cause. Here's the carnage after I removed the fuse holder.

And here's my repair. Cut away the fried trace, used some 16awg wire (also thicker than anything in the rest of the unit). We'll see what fries next

Awwww yeah. That is some righteous DIY repair. Nice job!

LiftMaster jack drive here with a MyQ add on. They’re finicky to set the up/down, etc. settings. Once you figure that out it’s been trouble free for awhile now. So much quieter than the old chain driven one.

Ordered the Genie version. Current is belt drive so noise probably will not change much. Now to plan to replace the door itself.
