Have a Nice Day? Coasting ILLEGAL!?!

I was just reading through title 46 of the Revised code of Washington. In washington state it is illegal to coast in nuetral on a downgrade. Weird, also it is illegal to lower your car so that the lowest point of the car is lower than the lowest part of the rim. Weird!

They don't want you coasting in neutral because it picks up more speed then if you left it in gear (in an auto). If you're in a stick car it automatically keeps the car at a decent speed rather then accelerating so much that you get out of control. Personally, I think you're a wuss if you don't power down the hills.

my car is basically a driving vehicle code violation

The only reason I would ever coast down a hill is if I was running out of gas.

Coasting downhill is illegal in most states. The reason: brakes don't work effectively.

Believe it or not, you save a little more gas by putting the car in gear than putting in neutral when going downhill.

In Japan, if you lower the car too low, the police will take it away. I saw that happened on news when I used to live there.

And why would you want your car even as low as the lower part of your rims? Not very convenient for driving, 'specially when you're dirt drivin'.

Talking abotu dumb laws. did you know that it is illegal to work on your car in the state of New Jersey if you're not a certified mechanic? You basiclly can't even check your oil or tire pressure.

I see this thread getting moved to off topic pretty quick

edit: argh..i can not type today see that uppercase I and F..well i put id and then is and then made it all caps the right way..b/c it was making me mad

anyhow jamie, wheels into the fenders..i am going to guess you either removed your fender liners..or just dealt with rubbing the struts, liners, etc.

Isn't coasting in an auto tranny subaru BAD for the AWD system?

Because if you can't tow it in neutral with all 4 wheels on the ground then it would make sense that coasting it down a hill with all 4 wheels on the ground would do the same damage.

Well, short-term I doubt it would do much harm... but if it was a REALLY LONG HILL........

I think you can just pull the fuse in the auto and tow it in 2wd mode.

In the 4EAT subarus......

The FWD fuse is there to allow use of the donut spare which should not be used over 50MPH and no longer than 50 miles. This is from memory, so I may have a couple number juxtaposed.

You cannot tow the car with 2 wheels on the ground even in 2WD mode - this is a BAD THING to do. In an EMERGENCY you can tow the car in neutral for a mile or two with all FOUR wheels on the ground without any major damage to the AWD system.

With the manual xmission you can tow the car in neutral with all 4 wheels on the ground.

In reality, if you have an auto xmission subaru you need to have it towed on a flatbed unless you want expensive repairs and an undrivable car. Although... if you're having it towed it probably wasn't driveable in the first place, huh?

Like I said I am pretty sure this is correct because in the past I have researched it to death, but my memory is a bit vague on the numbers.

(edit: I contradicted myself, whoops!)

You don't want to drive down a grade in neutral. It can heat your brakes to a dangerous level, possibly causing them not to work. Keep it in gear to keep as much pressure off your brakes as possible, and your car (and you) will last longer.

Who said that leaving the car in gear while going down a hill gives better mileage than coasting in neutral? Are you nuts? Consider this; your car is in neutral, effectively it is idling. Now consider this, your car is parked and running, and you're getting 0mpg. So while you're coasting down the hill in neutral, covering ground, how is it that you're getting less than 0mpg? Basically, you're getting free miles.

and who would think that because you can't tow a subaru, you can't coast? sorry, not quite

there's quite a difference... when you coast, 4 wheels are on the ground. That's fine, cause they all have to spin the same speed. And you know what, if they still used tow hooks, rather than putting a car up with 2 wheels on a block, then you COULD in effect tow an AWD car without doing damage, because all wheels could spin.

Now, you can't tow a Subaru (be it manual or automatic) at all! Unless, like I said, they just pull it up by tow hooks, which isn't good, because every bump you hit, the car will slam on those chains.

but seriously, even though it does no harm, why put car in neutral when going down a hill? that's just more wear on your clutch than needed...albeit not much.

Thumbs up

I side with Skirvdog. Coasting downhill on the freeway (Interstate 15 From El Cajon to Escondido), improved my MPG and MPTF DRASTICALLY!

My dad's got an '88 Sterling 825sl, 2.5 litre 24valve V-6, 5 speed) with the onboard computer which shows your instant and average fuel economy. By coasting on the downslopes of the 15 freeway, the car averaged on a 60 mile roundtrip 38.4 mpg.
This is no economy car. I just drove economy minded. Total mileage using 15 gallons of gas was 435 miles!

Same goes for the Scooby. So far I've achieved 353.4 miles on 14.2 gallons of gas. Pretty sure on a roadtrip that 400 miles on a tankfull is possible.

Leaving your car in gear going down a hill uses less gas than putting it into neutral. Why? The ECU senses that there's no load, so it cuts the gas. You can feel this when you coast to a stop in second... you'll feel a surge when the revs near idle while the gear is still engaged... that's the gas & spark kicking back in.
