Okay, so I'm thinking about going w/ a 1 step colder plug. I have found a few different answers as to which one it could be (NGK Platinum). I have found PFR7G, BKR7EGP, & a recently added PFR7B. They are all supposed to be 1 step colder platinum plugs for the WRX. What is the difference between them & which one is best to go with?

P.S. BTW, I am running a VF39 w/ all supporting mods (@~19-20psi on 91oct.), FMIC, w/ 280awhp.
Okay after some more searching. It looks like the PFR7B is the way to go for the platinum. I haven't learned about the difference between the others though. And what about the BKR7EIX iridium plugs? I'm trying to stay w/ either platinum or iridium for longevity. What do you guys think? Sorry if this has been cover many times before. Thanks in advince.

great FAQ as always

SubieStyle, PFR7B (NGK Part Number 4853) is the correct one step colder plat plug. I don't know if their iridium one is correct or not and after the week long fuss I had dealing with NGK to get the 100% correct part number, I wouldn't recommend anything but their plat one.

Mike Wevrick, Sharp eye! You have found the whole chicken/egg parable of the spark plug/manufacturer world. Car manufacturers specify miles, spark plug manufacturers specify time. What to do? I don't friggen know, but I'd err towards whichever you hit first.

Okay Unabomber, thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll stick w/ the platinums if it'll be okay.

If running a Stage II or higher tune, you should consider changing your plugs well before the recommended 60K maintenance interval. I just changed mine at 45K, and they definitely were in need of being replaced. I also went to a plug one step colder. See the thread with pics here:

I just put in the double platinum PFR7B (one step colder) plugs lat week. They came gapped at .028 already. They seem to be working great so far.

Glad you like them. It was a S U P E R pain in the butt dealing with NGK to get that damn part number, so I'm glad to help you and others out with a plug and play option.

Bringing this thread back.....

I have a COBB Stage 2 WRX.
Should i go with the PFR6G (stock) or the PFR7B (one step colder).
Where do you guys order these from? Do they come pre-gapped?
Thanks,

I have a WRX w/ VF34 and fuel upgrades and a cobb accessport tune, I use the NGK Iridium one-step colder plugs pre-gapped BKR7EIX-11 no problem. This plug stuff is confusing but these work great for me. I got them from http://www.upscaleautomotive.com

I saw some threads where people said the -11 one was the wrong gap at 0.044". I have the BKR7EIX non-11 and they work fine, looks like a 0.026 gap

Default denso iridium IK20

Hey all,

I've got an 03 wrx and just got some Denso IK20 plugs. Do I need to gap them? I have only modded my exhaust/up/dp and don't plan to put in a chip or anything. What does everyone think?

Thanks,
Justin

great thread very useful info.

I yanked my plugs today and replaced them with ngk coppers. (1 step colder BKR7E)

I was having some serious issues with my car bucking under full throttle. (ngk iridiums, BKR7EIX 1 step colder) pulled the plugs and the ceramic on one was cracked! holy crap. no wonder my car was running like ish. (drove it like that way too long, no time to fix it for the last month at least.)

Other than the cracked plug, they looked fine. Slight brownish dusty appearance, not beat up like lean, not fouled like running rich. pretty uniform across all cylinders. i was afraid before i pulled the plugs i might have been looking at a much more expensive issue.

All issues have disappeared, and the test drive this evening was flawless in every gear. I don't know if it was the iridiums, or the fact that one was cracked, but i'm here to tell ya, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the copper plugs (especially at 2 bucks a pop)

02wrx
stage2 93oct accessport map
up/turboback, ic hoses, ud pulley

NGK BKR7E copper plugs
appprox 28-29 gap (i have a crappy spark plug gauge, but there seemed to be a fair amount of variation in them straight outta the box)

NGK/Copper/BKR6ES/WRX/stock
NGK/Copper/BKR7ES/WRX/one step colder

NGK/Copper/BKR6E/WRX/stock
NGK/Copper/BKR7E/WRX/one step colder

Sorry if it's an obvious question but what's the difference between those with the "S" at the end of the part number and ones without? Thanks

My WRX

if you are using the -11 NGK's in a turbo'd motor they are the wrong plug.

Full stop.

The ---E plugs have a "V"-shaped electrode. The ---ES plugs have a standard (flat top) electrode. In practice there is very little difference between the way they fire, unless you believe all the marketing hype. FYI.

So which one is better? Which design comes on stock plugs? Thanks

They wanted four times the amount for the OEM platinum plugs, so I went with the NGK G-power. 2.99 a pop, might not get 65k out of them like the stockers but we'll see....

This is a number, refer to the manufacturer as they are all different.
For measuring, use feeler or wire gauge.
