06 STI flywheel bolts seem too short.
This is a frankenmotor build for a buggy. Im using an EJ 257 block from an 06 STI and an exedy flywheel /clutch kit. I researched flywheel bolts and it seems like they all use the same 10x1.0 x 24.5 from 2002 to 2020. However they only seem to have 6mm thread engagement which looks marginal to me.
Can anyone confirm this is correct?

OK,.. learning more about this. My new 06 STI short block never came with a flywheel but It seems all Subaru's have the same crankshaft bolt pattern and will fit either 5 or 6 speed flywheels. I am using a dual range 5MT transaxle from an Australian Forester and it uses a push type clutch. I bought a clutch/ flywheel kit from a Forester of that era and the flywheel bolts right up and uses the 6 bolt 5MT pressure plate. It seems like my parts set is compatible but the flywheel to crank bolts only have a 6 mm thread engagement.
Looking at some flywheel pics, some have a flat center section and others have the bolt pattern spot faced a 2-3 mm which will sink the bolts and add thread engagement. I noticed two torque specs and am wondering if the higher number is for those with spot faced flywheels and more thread depth? |

Well no help for me here,...
if anyone else stumbles on this thread with the same issue, here's what I did. I was not at all comfortable with 6mm thread engagement so I set the flywheel on a mill and spot faced each hole with a .750 end mill to a depth of 3mm. The center of the flywheel is very thick so no concerns about weakening it. Now I have 9mm thread engagement on a 10mm Bolt which is a little more than a standard nut thickness. I now feel comfortable using the slightly higher torque spec for the STI. |
