Hakone's are awesome, I would totally rock one. Good purchase for sure.

Basically they give you a half finished car and Tada wants you to complete it for him, at your expense.

Not modding this one at all, it's for trips and driving back and forth to work. For $28K with the TRD bits, it is a deal. You can only get the Sachs/Brembos on the TRD 86, which also gets you better tires as well, but NO Hakone green paint. I needed that GREEN. Only 150 manual Hakones in the USA (350 automatics). I think the theme here is like the MX5's Touring trim where they are targeted more for adult flavor. Might not have the super performance damping or brakes, but for street-ing around, no issue. |

Congrats on the new DD. If you got a deal that makes all the difference in the world to me. If Booby/Toyo f up the next 86, or if Subaru f's up the new STI, an 86 is my backup plan to have a manual inexpensive performance car in the garage. I'm talking used. At 20k or something it would be fun, and it'd immediately get Ohlins, brake upgrades, and some kind of exhaust/tune for a simple setup. The older I get the less i want to pay for anything because all the sweet performance cars are getting way too expensive or the mfr. mucks it. Example: Poopra and C8, no manual transmission available. I'm still pissed at my old boss. I brokered his deal on his silver FRS. He put 30k miles on it and sold it for 14k. I had first right of refusal when he bought it and when I found out he got rid of it his excuse "I forgot about that." MFer. I'd be happy AF with a FRS for a weekend car at 14k. |

LOL'ed at "Poopra".
Actually the Supra is a great car if one can only drive AT or have other MT cars. It's designed to go fast with no acceptance (tolerance) for human error, maybe not fast like a C8, but fast against pretty much anything out there especially after a quick tune. With that knowledge, I find myself enjoying just admiring the car in my garage with a cold drink more so than actually driving it. If I want to go driving I'll take my STI. It's like a 1:1 scale model car that I can go for a quick spin in when or if I want to. |

A lightly used 86 for $20k with agreeable miles would be a fun car to have as a toy. So many ways to mod it and make it unique. Getting Brembos isn't that hard and there are better Big Brake Kit options out there anyway.

Agreed! If I do get the mod bug (and I won't because I want a Supercharger for my NA Miata) there are great coilovers and better brakes to be had! |

Plenty of noobs out there who get just as much excitement out of a honda civic as I'll ever get out of any car. Unfortunately for me, I'm not so easily pleased, especially since "pleasure" for me is adrenaline based. Once I adjust to something and it starts to lose that edge, gotta up the ante. I suppose I might be envious of those who can remain innocent and ignorant to the need of more.
My point is: just because someone enjoys it doesn't mean the car is anything special or has some kind of objectively good quality. |

BRZ does have objectively good qualities though, but it's just not in the power delivery part.

Torque dip FTMFW. Not only is the engine low on power, it’s not even a particularly enjoyable low power engine.
But salesmen gonna salesmen. They just can’t help themselves. |

It has a lot of good characteristics that are uncommon to find now-a-days. Small. Two door. Light (ish... by today's fat pig standards). Hard-top. RWD. Those things make it unique among today's cars, which is fantastic. |

I can go on living my life having shared my opinion and being ok with you not approving of my opinion. I'll still smile when driving my BRZ, I won't frown because BeepBoop's opinion is that my car is not good. |

That's just it......"special" can't be "objective". It's purely subjective. I am having a BLAST in my "new" little toy running a sub-100hp Clover 4. Very "special" to me and why I bought it. We cringe every BRZ we get. Just FINALLY sold a 300+ day old unit. ZERO on our lot now. |

Some times I wish I never visited car forums (not particularly this forum) as I end up having knowledge I didn't need and end up spending more money on my car, but on the flip side, I'm glad I did visit so that I can have even more fun with my car than before. |

Some good points. Some/many of us have roads available where it's actually safe to exploit some power. So like you, and to quote Mr. Jones in Friday "My PLEASURE" is bang bang bang my vehicle's ass through and out of the corners. Just past the apex when I can go wfo, well I like a vehicle that can do that with gusto. Bike or car, I want some power. I was doing 200 crank HP 20 years ago, and yeah, no excitement. That's as exciting as a heffer. If you are just city driving, dealing with da Man everywhere, etc, I can see a 86 being a perfect fit since you don't have anywhere you can really use additional HP. But I live some place where I can ride/drive how I want, not injure myself, or anyone else, nor even get cited. In 20 years of felony riding out in my twisties, zero tickets, zero accidents. When those roads are populated, or when I can no longer do that I will move to some place I can. Either way, I want power. |

Driving my BRZ through twisties in British Columbia along with biker guys was super fun for me. Car didn't need more power when gravity was doing its job.
Car needs more power when committing asshatery though: https://paultan.org/2020/06/03/subar...-two-arrested/ Last edited by chanomatik; 06-04-2020 at 08:46 AM. |

IMO, the track or high speed highway pulls is where power makes a big difference, not twisty public roads. Twisty country roads where you can only hit about 70-80 between the curves is were the twins excel. They carry speed so well through the corners and there isn’t enough straight line distance for the heavier, big power cars to exploit their power advantage.
On a track, where speeds reach 110+, the 200hp becomes a problem because you can take corners faster than slow drivers in fast cars, but that slow driver can then push the loud pedal to gap you... until the next corner. Rinse repeat. And yup, that is frustrating as hell because that person is actively dampening what the twins are best at. The BRZ is an awesome car to learn how to drive fast on the track because it gives a ton of feedback, has great controls, and is just very rewarding to hone in toward that perfect lap. But any track with appreciable straights highlight the low power, especially in sessions with big power cars. On a country road, the BRZ doesn’t feel underpowered at all because you have to operate in a much narrower window for speed and space. Last edited by quentinberg007; 06-04-2020 at 10:47 AM. |
