Subaru Levorg Prototype STI Sport Teased Before Tokyo Auto Salon Premiere
Just a couple of months after Subaru revealed the sleek Levorg Prototype, the Japanese automaker has published a couple of teasers providing a glimpse of an STI Sport version. The car, set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon next month, features an eye-catching new bodykit complete with slightly more aggressive front and rear fascias. There is also an obligatory STI badge on the rear and a set of unique wheels. What’s interesting about the Levorg STI Sport Prototype currently in the works is that Subaru only unveiled the current Levorg STI Sport back in May before starting deliveries in Japan the following month. While the overall shape of the outgoing Levorg is similar to the new model, there are a series of significant visual differences, most notably the redesigned head- and taillights. Sleeper: New Subaru Levorg STI Sport Wagon Is Kind Of A Bummer Underpinning the new Levorg will be the Subaru Global Platform shared with the Ascent, Impreza, and other Subaru models. Entry-level versions will come outfitted with a turbocharged 1.8-liter boxer engine. It’s likely that the future production-spec Levorg STI Sport will be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer delivering 296 hp, while a full-blown STI variant is also a possibility down the road. As with other Subaru models, the new Levorg will be loaded with advanced safety technologies, including the company’s next-generation EyeSight system that includes a new camera as well as four radars mounted at the front and rear. Subaru will launch the all-new Levorg in Japan in the second half of 2020 as a 2021 model year. |

It looks like the station wagon version of a current sti after a mid cycle refresh.

Is it not an all new model on your beloved new platform? It's not a station wagon version of a 2015 WRX, which itself was based on an even older car, which is what it looks like - hence the point of my post...
I actually like the incremental design change way of doing things. It's my favorite thing about Rolex and Subaru, but the downside is that every brand new car looks at least five years old upon release. I don't care, but some clearly do. |

But it’s still a WRX hatch. That usually meant STI, too... but now??? |

the reveal is a nice way to tease the STI, but in wagon form, it will be up to the photoshoppers to sedan and hatch is for us. we may get an idea of the STI design in the front. if the levorg is possibly releasing in the second half of 2020 for japan, what will mean for the wrx it is based on for the states.

I think I've cracked the code. I think the Levorg is the low volume QA/test bed for the WRX and STi, to test and develop the production lines and find problems in the system before they start working on the greater volume vehicles, since it essentially is a WRX. Which, as a mfr, it makes sense... Best way to roll out changes is in small batches. If you got a low volume item that's essentially the same as the higher volume, see what happens when you start working on the low volume item to streamline the higher volume production.
1st Gen Levorg came out in 2014, as a 2014 model. Shortly after that, they released the new VA WRX and STi (dropped "impreza") as 2015 models, and WRX went to the FA. New Levorg above, and... if I'm right, that means we'll shortly see/hear an announcement of the next WRX/STi, and it *will* be quite similar to the design language used in this Levorg, just like it was in 2014. --kC |

It's too stationwagon-ish look with some resemblance of the current Impreza hatch. No thanks from me.

I'll be honest, if we could get rid of Tom Troll, this car could very well be rebadged WRX and sold in the 2 variants, Wagon and Sedan... again. --kC |

One design element of note is the semi-squared off wheel arches (flat-tops and not just "round"). We've seen them on many previous prototypes, many of the Vizivs over the years, but haven't yet seen it on any Subarus in production... until now. Not the new Outback, Forester, Legacy (Ascent sort of). Not even the S209.
I really do think the very next WRX and/or STi will follow the design language we've seen in some of the Viziv concepts. --kC |

Viziv Tourer Concept:
Levorg Prototype: Prototype follows the design language of the concept, just "tamer". Yes, Subaru goes conservative. But, if you look at the lines, they're pretty similar. Of course, I would prefer if they just made the concept. Looks much better. Usually does. But, they still have to make parts, cost-effectively. So, there is some give-take. --kC |
