HOW TO: Grimmspeed Master Cylinder Brace Installation- Subaru WRX 2008-2014
This is a relatively easy installation that comes with a great improvement in brake feel. The pedal doesn't feel as "mushy" as it did before and the pedal gives you a little more feedback and allows you to feel what the brakes are doing much better. The pedal feels more consistent. Overall, it just gives you more confidence when applying the brakes. After having put our own car through a couple track days so far, I'm very excited to find out how much this helps at the track. The question is not does it work, it's how much? On the street, it's already immediately noticeable without having applied the brakes very hard yet.
One cool thing is, aside from the anodized red stopper, it looks factory. It's a very clean piece that is 100% functional and doesn't make your engine bay look awkward or like it's been heavily modified. It's tucked away pretty nicely.
On to the install***8230;
Pre-Install - If you don't think it's too much of a pain in the neck, removing the intercooler gives you a little more room to work. However, you do not NEED to remove it. It's only a matter of convenience. We did not remove the intercooler but in hindsight, we might have.
- Start by removing the plastic fuel line bracket holding the fuel lines from the metal bracket attached to the chassis. Also, you'll need to remove the clip holding the lower ECU harness right below these fuel lines. This is on the front left of the car, next to the shock tower.
- Detach the metal bracket by removing the 2 bolts securing it to the chassis. Be careful not to drop the bolts in this tight area. It just make it a bigger pain if you have to go digging for them!
- Move the fuel line assembly and lower mounting bracket out of the way so you can access the area where the brace will mount to the car which is right on the side of the shock tower behind the bracket you removed in step 2.
- Insert the bracket into place. Using one of the shorter M6 bolts, hand thread the bolt into the upper most bolt hole towards the back of the car. This will allow you to start threading the rest of the bolts in while the mount stays put.
- The next couple steps are impossible to take good pictures of. The bracket is bent in a way that doesn't let you see where the bolts are going in very clearly. It's hard enough locating them with your eyes so you'll need to be patient and use your hands to feel bolt hole locations out. This makes it easier to locate where the bolt is going before you thread it on.
Attach the lower 2 bolts to the chassis where the brace has a long gap for the bolt holes to fit. Don't fully tighten yet.
- Using the original OEM bracket, mount it in front of the new Grimmspeed brace so that the bolt holes are lined up. With the remaining 2 bolts, attach the new brace and original bracket to the chassis. At this point, you can tighten all bolts connecting the brace to the chassis.
- Remove the plastic fuel line bracket from the lines and reverse the bracket to the other side of the fuel lines, on the left side of the car. This will allow clearance for the lines from the new brace. You'll need to rotate one of the fuel dampeners inside the lines so that it doesn't interfere with the new location. You might also need to bend the original metal bracket slightly so that you can mount the fuel lines without interference. Insert the plastic clip back into the metal bracket.
- Mount the new stud and nut assembly so that it's tight up against the end of the master cylinder. As soon as it's snug against the cylinder, tighten the lock nuts down.
