Default HOW TO: Grimmspeed Up Pipe Installation

1. Remove the bypass valve recirculation and vacuum hose. In the pictures, we removed the BOV from the intercooler for other reasons but you don’t have to do that for this project specifically.

2. Loosen the coupler from the intercooler to throttle.
3. Remove the 3 bolts holding down the intercooler.

4. Remove the intercooler.
5. Put clean rag or towel in turbo compressor outlet.

6. Remove the heat shield. We only needed to remove 3 bolts because of our aftermarket heat shield. If you have a stock heat shield, there will be several more.

7. Remove 3 upper downpipe bolts.

8. From underneath, remove lower heat shield and 2 remaining downpipe bolts.

9. Remove the bolts fastening the downpipe to the catback. Remove lower bracket bolt. Unplug o2 sensor. You don’t have to take the sensor out of the pipe, only unplug the harness.

10. Lower and remove the downpipe.

11. Remove the plastic undertray. You don’t need to remove the metal skid plate.

12. Remove the left and right heat shields to access the nuts on the studs for the header to the engine.

13. Unplug the o2 sensor harness and remove the o2 sensor from the manifold.

14. Remove the 2 bolts fastening the up pipe to the manifold.

15. Remove the nuts securing the header to the engine and remove the header completely.

16. Now that the header is away from the car, begin to remove the upper mounting bolts for the up pipe to the turbo. There are a total of 5 fasteners, 3 accessible from the top and 2 from the bottom. Here are the 3 from the top.

17. Once completely free, remove the up pipe from the lower side through the sub-chassis. If you can’t seem to break the downpipe free, you might need to loosen the 2 nuts holding on the motor mounts and lift the engine just slight with a jack. This is very easy to do and will give enough clearance to remove the up pipe if you cannot get it out.

18. Before installing the new up pipe, assemble the new studs in the side that mates with the turbo. Make sure to use anti-seize on all 5 before you put the up pipe back on the car. Hand tighten the threads and make them go until a wrench makes them snug with a double nut.

19. Insert the up pipe onto the car in the same position as stock and hand tighten one nut on one of the turbo studs so the up pipe can stay in place while you get the remaining 5 nuts on. 3 nuts can be fastened from the bottom and 2 from the top.

20. While you are underneath the car, you can now put the downpipe back into place. Hang it in the mounting bracket first, then fasten all the nuts and bolts down to the exhaust and turbo. Make sure to plug the o2 sensor back in, as well.

21. Move back to the front of the car and put the header back on the car using the 6 nuts to fasten it to the heads. Make sure your fasten the two bolts from the header to the up pipe and use the supplied gasket. If you don’t have a new gasket, a new Subaru gasket from your local dealer will work fine.

22. Put the o2 sensor in the manifold first. Then put the heat shielding back on. Then, plug in the o2 sensor harness connector.

23. Do a once-over and make sure all bolts and nuts are tightened back down, including the motor mounts nuts if you had to take those off.

24. Put the lower plastic under tray back on.

25. From the top, put the heat shield back on.

26. Reinstall the intercooler and reconnect the bypass valve to the recirculation hose.
