Default New here! Add another to the list of broken pitch stop mounts

2016 WRX stock everything, no mods except milk jug delete.

As the title says stock car and tune. A hard shift from 1st to 2nd split my pitch stop mount in two just below the bolt hole on the firewall. It made a loud audible POP. I thought I ran over something. The car drove fine after aside form a creaking when the drivetrain would be shocked or during on/off throttle transitions.

Luckily somewhere on here someone had posted the TSB for the US as Subaru Canada claims my car was their first with this issue (I call BS) but anyway it's being repaired (under warranty) as I type this and they've had the car 1 week. If you have ANY funky noises coming from the firewall /footwell during shifting or when the drivertain is moving check this ASAP. Mine wasn't a clunk but a creaking sound. Like a rusty hinge. apparently SOA extended coverage for this but Subaru Canada has not. Repairing this item out of warranty is big $$.

I post here to show that EVEN TOTALLY STOCK these mounts can fail. If your car is in the effected build dates please be vigilant. I sent the PDF of the TSB that Subaru of America issued to the dealer to keep them from "you broke it" rhetoric and made the encounter much more friction free than if they didn't know it was an official problem.

*UPDATE* Subaru Canada fixed the car but did not call it a warranty repair and instead a "gesture of Goodwill" they're actively avoiding calling it a warranty repair. Canadians, print the SOA TSB like I did and have it ready if your pitch stop mount breaks like mine did. Subaru of Canada isn't likely to recall this issue.

Side note, the courtesy cars windscreen cracked during my time with it and the dealer is trying to get $1000 out of me for the repair. This is going to suck!!

Check if your insurance company covers your rentals, and if you have glass coverage.

Right - don't they usually throw meat at you for the privilege of changing out your windshield?

I get drive train shock and loud audible pop with hard shifts from 1st to 2nd, but that's just my shifting method.

You'll probably get the car back worse than it came in since you brought it into the dealership

If you have ramps have a look from underneath at the pitch stop mount. If you don't have ramps remove the intercooler and look at it from the top. If it's broken that's your pop. I shifted hard after the repair and it makes no noise. Double check that yours isn't broken.

It's totally outrageous, I've gotten my insurance involved and they're going to fight with them. I can't deal with this nonsense especially working nights. I've had windshields replaced for less than $300. Also I'm almost positive they're bitter that I don't do my maintenance there. Dick move 100%

Different question, maybe it's been asked before ..... how can you tell if your 2017 is pre or post Subaru's fix to the mount? I tried to look at mine today, but I cannot think of anything specific to look for to see if my car is a later production one that had the correction on it?

I bought the car in April of 2017, and it was pretty much fresh off the boat and had only 6 miles on the odometer. Hadn't even finished dealer prep for the lot yet.

Check out the SOA service buliton for the pitch stop mount issue and look at the build date range. Then check your build date on the sticker in the driver side door jamb.

Checked mine out, I'm good to go! (Has the hole, so newer mount).

Will probably still get the Perrin stop sooner or later though.

Does anyone know if the issue has occurred on any revised part cars? I have a 2018 STI that made a really weird crack sound shifting 1 to 2 literally rolling out of a parking lot so it was a super soft shift but its worried me since.

Don’t worry so much. It was probably just a rod breaking in half

According to the TSB the STi is not listed, so I'm guessing it is not affected.

As a side note, finally got around to getting maintenance done on my car, had the Perrin pitch stop brace and mount installed while the intercooler was off.

Did you guys experience any increased NVH after installation? I just installed my pitch stop brace today and went for a drive. Definitely more noises transmitted from the drivetrain as a whole, not much more vibration. Makes sense as the pitch stop has a much more solid connection to the chassis. The OEM bracket is so flimsy I couldn't believe how much it flexed when pushed on.

I noticed a bit more vibration when starting the engine or when the A/C would cycle, and there was definitely more noise when downshifting. It wasn't too bad and I got used to it pretty quickly. For reference, I have not done the engine mounts or transmission mount yet.

OK same. No engine mounts or trans mount, I did change to the Group N pitch stop while I was in there though.

I'm wondering for those outside of the warranty mileage, How much would this cost to repair? removing the IC, Engine, tranny, grinding, taping off, welding, painting, re-installation of everything... Jesus, I can't imagine this is going to cost under $1500 to repair. I'll check up on mine when I get home next month.
