I scrubbed them all with a toothbrush... it's coming back. He needs to do his maintenance on the tank! (otherwise I'm gonna turn it into a 90gal freshwater planted!)

Kind of curious.... what's the cost of maintaining tanks like these yearly?

No a lot. I do a 20 gallon water change every two weeks. A box of salt makes 200 gallons and cost $100. So about $300 for salt per year for my set up. Bigger is more expensive of course. Then you add in replacement light bulbs which vary from 45-100 depending of if its t5s or metal halide. T5s are good for 8 months were metal halides are good for a year. I'd say 600 a year maybe. It's the initial set up for a saltwater tank which is expensive.

I top my freshwater off maybe once every week or so; it's to the point now where it takes complete care of itself, from the substrate to the live plants to the fish and shrimp and snails. I just feed and add water. I hardly ever do any actual water change, mostly because I have the plants and everything is keeping itself in check now.

(I got my 40 gal breeder from Petco when they had the $1/gal tank sale so it cost me $40 for the tank, stand we got off craigslist, and i just got a cheap Petco brand HOB filter for it usually with no material inside, just there to create water movement)

picked up new piece of wood for the 40-gal freshwater; gives a good comparison for how big the rhino pleco is getting in the tank

I just picked up a 36 gal for my boy. Our first fish. Ill snap some pictures once its all set up. In a month we plan to pick up some sharks but I guess we have to start with more sturdy fish? So some green barbs for now.

Hung my halides. Had to hang them since they increased my tank temp by 7 degrees.

Awesome fish tanks! They seem like they'd be a lot of work though.
