Default Manley 99.50A and 99.50B Pistons

Hey guys my 06 WRX has been struck by the curse of the Subaru ring land failure. I have got a new STI shortblock from Subaru but I want to put a set of forged pistons in it. Manley has released their standard bore 99.50 pistons with Subaru A and B sizes. From my understanding these are suppose to be drop in's as long as you get the correct ones for what your block is stamped with. Ring gap has to be checked of course but, has anyone used these in a build? can anyone give an idea of what the PTW clearance was on them?

Thanks

I am going to be building my new block with these pistons. I'm letting my builder order the pistons, but my block has the "BBBB" code stamped on top. I was going to go with Manleys anyway, and then these were just released. Looks like a good match for someone like me with a brand new EJ257 case.

They are pretty new, and I haven't seen anyone on the forums who have actually used them yet. Unfortunately I won't be able to give you an option until later this summer, although my block will be done in 3 weeks.

They have not been released yet. We have just placed our opening order for this new model piston. We should be seeing them sometime next week.

To order you will need to specify how many A or B's you need than we will ship out accordingly.

thanks
Adam

Just order my set of 4, "A"'s for No Limit Motorsports a few days ago. I called Manley and asked about these pistons. I was told the A and B pistons were the only true drop-in, no honing required. Their other standard bore 99.5 pistons still need to be checked for PTW clearance. Manley also recommended No Limit Motorsports as a place to order on the east coast. I went with them they were great to deal with.

Just to add to this. I was at the machine shop two days ago with my parts. My Manley 99.5 pistons that were purchased in October measured 99.49xxx. The 2010 EJ257 "b" block with 20k miles on it had very good cylinders with no abnormal wear. The ptw clearance were all between 0.0045-0.005. Being that I plan to track the car in the 450-500hp range this was considered to be ok in there eyes. I was also told to expect a rather noisy cold start which doesn't matter much to me.

So if you get a new block and install these pistons, what PTW clearances are you supposed to end up with? Also are these 2618 alloy, or 4032. I'm curious as to how loud these will be for a nice daily?

They are 2618. I haven't handled a set in person but I am sure they are aimed at a .003-.0035 PTW based on the corresponding sizes.

We've been getting some great feedback from customers building engines with these.

How would these fair in an engine that blew a piston? Provided the bore was fine and just needed a slight hone to resurface the walls.

Guess it depends on how it measures out in terms of out of roundness and taper.

Anyone know if the standard 99.5mm pistons are slightly larger then the A, and B drop in pistons?

I assume yes, I just want to make sure...

A is 99.505-99.515
B is 99.495-99.505

I know the regular 99.5 pistons usually mic out to around 3.9140-3.9145"

Haven't measure any of these new A and B types.

Just go 99.75 and remove any doubt. Sounds like the engine has not even been taken apart yet?

No I was asking just out of curiosity, motor is still running strong in my car. But someone locally is selling a short that had a piston crack a ringland. Was considering buying it.

Cracked ringland usually equals scoring. Go with the 99.55mm piston and you should be able to get a clean cylinder unless the scoring is bad.

Depends...my last block had scoring that was around .002-.003" which ruled out the 99.55mm pistons as the extra .002" they give you is generally used in your hone. And that is assuming a block that is not ovaled out too much.

Not disagreeing, just saying measure THEN buy

Just wondering what kind of feedback your getting on the noise/slap these make? Since you get a predetermined PTW clearance, they should all sound about the same huh?

I've heard people say regular manley pistons are on the noisy side.
