Well I didn't want the STi Performance exhaust as it is technically more restrictive than the OEM Type RA/19+ exhaust. So that left me with very limited options as the S209 mufflers are $$ and the JDM Sport Mufflers are $$$$.

Browsing the classifieds on NASIOC I came across this combo of the Namless 3" midpipe and the JDM Sport Mufflers. Made and offer, and drove to Maryland to pick everything up!

Just curious what downpipe you are running with this setup??

Personally, I thought they did a decent job on the RA-R, but agree that it wasn't as hardcore as the Spec C RA-R; I like the fact that they got a lot of weight out of the car though, but it could've been better.

So if you had to buy all the parts again, was there anything you'd skip based on what you know now?
Well. I got awesome deals on everything so it definitely makes it different. Plus this setup works as a package setup. Car definitely handles better.

S209 Toe Arms and Trailing Arms are nice but i would rather get something adjustable.

S209 Bilsteins and Pinks. I have $200. Into it after selling my RA Bilsteins. For $1k id go coilovers.

The Extended Subframe bolts are awesome, but the lower stoppers im not sure did anything. Better off getting a true lock down kit.

20mm Sti RSB. Car is perfectly neutral. No understeer and can lift an inside tire on Autox. Still, id rather have a larger front and rear sway setup for less body roll.

One thing i was amazed by was the draw stiffners. Night and day difference. The car turns in so damn fast. They were definitely a good mod.

Added another Type RA-R modification to the RA today. The Type RA-R uses a smaller capacity windshield washer fluid reservoir to reduce weight. For those who want to say "just run the OEM reservoir empty" you may exit this thread now

Overall the JDM unit when full is 5.5lbs lighter than the USDM unit. I removed both side braces. Together complete weight savings was 15.5lbs.

The Reservoir is a 90% bolt in application. The USDM bumper beam as an added bolt on side brace the JDM version does not thave. This is removed. There is also a wiring harness that needs to be zip tied out of the way, but no big issue.

OEM USDM Reservoir

This is the wiring harness that needs to be zip tied up and out of the way. Remove the white harness channel to make room for the JDM reservoir. You can also see the USDM side brace has been removed

Here is everything in place and the reservoir filled. The pump harness electrical tape a cut back an inch or two to get it to reach the pump.

The JDM unit has a different filler neck. You need to pull out the top insert from your OEM filler neck and transfer it to the JDM unit.

These are the two diagonal side braces the USDM bumper has. I removed both for the weight savings. Only the driver side needs to be removed however.

This is the OEM USDM level sensor plug. The JDM unit does not have this. You have 2 options. Remove the sensor from the USDM unit (good luck) or add a 1ohm resistor to this plug, tape it up, and tuck away. This is what I did. When I sell the car going back to stock is easier.

awesome build! I love the philosophy; has the cost been noticeably greater than say going with more aftermarket pieces?

Oh, yes hahah. You do get what you pay for sometimes. However, the factory parts have to still follow certain regulations and reliability requirements. So from a performance aspect they lean towards the conservative side. Like the pillow ball bushings. They are an upgrade over stock but still very compliant. Where an aftermarket poly bushing is cheaper and probably harder.

Exclamation Type-RA STI JDM parts

Hey brother, I'm in the same boat as you with my build on my Type-RA, I want to keep genuine STI parts on the car. I have been struggling with Subaru dealerships in the U.S. and in Japan to figure out the part number for the Pink Springs to verify its correct for the Type-RA Bilstein struts. Can you share what channels you went through to obtain those?

Thanks!

I know you weren't asking me But...

I'd go with the STi Pinks designed for the STi Type S Bilsteins:

https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/51770
ST20330VV100 x2 + ST20380VV010 x2

These are the VAB "D Type" springs designed for the 2018+ Bilsteins. They should provide a 10mm drop and increase roll rigidity/stability while still being "comfortable".

The S207 & S208 have different springs for their Bilstein Dampmatic dampers.

While my shipment to finish the Group N shifter install from Japanparts is sitting on a dock in Tokyo harbor for the past month I have been itching to start a new project.

I bit the bullet and ordered the Intercooler Spray Harness: ST84981VV030 for the S209.

This is the electrical harness that connects to the back of the roll center plug on the steering wheel and then goes back to the sprayer tank. I am certain that the paddles plug in no issue, but wanted to make sure the chassi harness install was as straight forward as I think it will be before I bought all of the parts for the swap.

Still waiting for my Group N Shifter Bushing and Group N Transmission Crossmember bushings to show up. Still stuck in Japan until this is virus is over. I broke down and bought another Group N Bushing from Subispeed and should be here this week which will allow me to install the Group N shifter at least. Also, waiting on the S209 Intercooler Sprayer Assembly.

In the mean time this JDM piece showed up today. I always liked the old school carbon strut bars the GC8's came with that had this sticker on the bar.

Went for another cruise up the Delaware Scenic Byway and past the Hawks Nest a few days ago. Stopped at a few breweries that were open for some tastings!

Car handles awesome on mountain roads. Very curious how this setup will be once AutoX season starts. I am very tempted to upgrade the swaybars to an aftermarket setup.

With all this quarantine stuff going on I have gotten a lot done on the CJ7 project when I have been back in PA for a few days at a time. Currently the windshield and tailgate are at paint. Still need to wire up the heated seats and a few other small odds and ends.

Awesome progress bro, the bridge shots are awesome! Can you post a shot of the mg oil cap? I’m tracked one down, but it doesn’t line up like yours does, but instead facing sideways - logo wise, lol.

I will get you a shot once I get off work tonight. The OEM piece should be straight. I found the fakes are usually off center, and the rubber O ring around the bottom doesn't seal. The one on ebay from Russia looks odd to me if that is the one you mean.

Thanks bro, I appreciate it; I picked this one up from the U.K. and it came with the box, paperwork, etc. but the side is facing towards the left side of the car instead of simply forwards. I've looked at quite a few through google images, but can't get any idea of is this thing is legit or not? I think I'm more embarrassed that I spent some money, but may have ended up with a fraud lol.

Just looked at mine. It is also not symmetrical! I never noticed this before. The threads are perfect the the STI logo goes forward. I have been looking around and have seen so many variations of how his cap looks idk whats real

Thanks for the kind words. Its such a great platform to modify. I find it fitting to try and modify with factory parts when I can.

Installed the Group N Shifter Assembly and STi Group N Rear Shifter bushing today. This is a modification i always dreamed about doing for years. Nobody installs this because of the price and rarity. Which I think is why I wanted it so much. But, what about the performance?

All I can say is WOW! The all mechanical linkage makes it feel like a mechanical gated shifter. Its so hard to explain how precise everything is. If you can find one the premium is DEFINITELY worth it.

I have heard horror stories from some about knocking out the split pin to install the solid U joint. Hopefully these pictures help you out, but I think this whole job took 2.5 hours.

Disassembly

Remove the Clamshell that the lower shifter stay slides into to make room to get to the Split pin

Adjust the Reverse Lockout Cable. Make sure these two holes are aligned or as close as possible. Mine works perfect with it this close

The Reverse lockout is now a 1 piece design. The OEM boot still fits just fine
