Just gonna jump in here..

I work at a dealership. It has been explained to me that there is an ignition or key cycle count embedded in the ecu. When you flash it, it resets the value to 0. When you have thousands of miles on the car and the value reads 20, they know. My suggestion is be honest and ask about it. Plenty of stories on here regarding dealerships being for/against.

**edit** This was from Subaru. I have a 15/16, I don't know if that applies to any other year.

I've heard this as well. So after you reflash just crank your car hundreds of times and they will never know the difference.

Don't know if this was asked before; will installing oem cruise control on a base model 2013 Impreza cause a warranty problem? To do it the steering wheel and airbag must come off, audio and cruise pads put in, and cable plugged into socket, then airbag and wheel put back on. I don't see a problem with such a simple procedure, but SOA dealers won't touch it.

How did you get a full factory warranty on a 7 year old car?

Like others have said; you play - you pay. If you were Subaru, what would you do?
They can, and do, deny warranty claims based on modification all the time.

While your warranty will not be "voided," your warranty claim can be denied.

this is not a factory warranty.

this is an aftermarket warranty sold through your dealership. read your paperwork to find out what they will or wont cover.

Every dealer's service manager is different, so whatever dealer you bring your car to also has an affect on whether or not they will fix your car free of charge, depending on the issue you have.

wrong.

warranty work is paid for by Subaru Of America which is who makes the call on if repairs will be covered or not, the dealership has zero say in what gets covered or not.

Good will repairs are a completely different issue, and don't pertain to warranty service.

I am with you on that, there is no consistency when you deal with Subaru dealers.

Default warranty

The warranty is usually not voided, its just on case by case depending on the part and circumstance of the issue that the claim will either be denied or approved. Scooby's post was pretty right on.

I have 20k miles on my 16 wrx. Upon purchasing last year, I was talked into the 7 yr - 100k warranty. I recently got hit with the "mod bug" and would like to get an AP/tune now.
Can I cancel the warranty and get any money back? (Car and warranty is completely paid off).....Feeling like an idiot

It all depends on your dealer... I have a stage 2 catless wrx and just got serviced last week, and they didn't say anything.

Default Your warranty cannot be voided

The following is anecdotal from my father who's been in the service side of Mercedes dealers for 30+ years:
Be straightforward with the service writer. Have a good relationship with the dealer. If the dealer does a repair under warranty on a modded car the dealer could get audited and charged back by the OEM on a case by case basis. If the dealer gets charged back then they essentially did the repair for free. Management doesn't like their employees working for free. The dealer can do a goodwill repair from their slush fund if they want to keep the customer happy. The way a tech writes up the repair order makes a difference. The personality of the service manager makes a difference. Most cars don't get their warranty "voided" but rather a repair just isn't covered under warranty.
This is just from what I've heard about Mercedes but I imagine it may be similar for Subaru.
And if you don't think that Mercedes get modded, I've got a great 2nd hand story to tell you about a nitrous system in a C-class, or the James Bond gizmos on an SL that hid a motorized compartment full of condoms, or S- classes dropped to the ground.

It all boils down to the dealership you go too.
Here is an actual experience of mine when I had my VW GTI which had a turbo back exhaust, intake, and tune at the time.

I went to dealership A who took pictures of my mods, documented it and told me I can no longer bring the car to them for warranty work of any kind.

Fast forward, the car now has a bigger turbo, alcohol injection and air suspension + custom tune.

Dealership B who I made a good relationship with a couple of the advisers took care of me countless times. I went to that dealership for all sorts of mechanical work all covered under warranty. From multiple water pump failures to failed valve cover gasket, intake air temp sensor to something as simple as a cracked intake pipe.

Not sure. Our 99 Impreza L had CC as well as a few other things added to it after it arrived at the dealer.
We later had a few warranty items dealt with by the same dealer with no issues.

on whether you can get away with fraud or not.

The dealership has no say in what SOA will or wont cover as part of warranty service.

This is either the dealership committing warranty fraud on your behalf, or eating the cost because they like you. Likely the former.

They were a mod friendly dealer who actually offered aftermarket tunes as an option on their cars. VWoA has approved a couple of the repairs on this car post factory warranty under extended warranty. (and yes it was documented that my car had aftermarket parts on it and a tune) I had to send those documents into VWoA when I lemoned the car, had no issues.

Great. Apples and oranges.

Subaru dealers (like most dealers) are not in the position to authorize or deny warranty coverage. Mods very commonly lead to service denial.

Pay to play.

A friend of mine blew the motor of his 14 WRX which was Stage 2+ at the time. He brought it to the dealership with all of his mods still on and they told him in order for them to do the warranty work he had to take all of the mods off. This is interesting because even with the mods taken off the ECU was still reflashed regardless. Wonder how they got away with that one

Default Warranty can’t be coided

A question, if skid plates are put on a car can a dealer make them be taken off before warranty work is done?
Thanks

1. The odometer cannot be verified:
If there is evidence the odometer has been messed with or disconnected at some point, SOA can void your warranty. This is because if your warranty mileage cannot be proven. You could have 60,000 miles on your car and if the odometer says 23,000, technically you would be out of warranty. THIS HAS TO BE PROVEN

2. Vehicle has been in a major accident and repaired:
If your vehicle has been in a major accident, most likely there will be additional problems down the road. SOA cannot be held responsible for something related to an accident. Most vehicles that have warranties voided for this reason have a salvage title issued by the issurance company.
THIS HAS TO BE PROVEN

3. Your vehicle has a salvage title
If your vehicle has a salvage title it is because it was in a major accident or under water. SOA cannot be held responsible for something related to water or accident damage. THIS HAS TO BE PROVEN

There may be a few other reasons, but these are the most popular. Most have to do with accident or odometer fraud.

Alot of people think that because their car is modified or "abused" that the service advisor, the dealership or SOA can void their warranty. They cannot!! Most people that go to the dealer and have an issue with something not being covered STILL HAVE A WARRANTY. Their warranty has not been voided, their warranty claim has been denied. There is a difference.

For example, if you have a problem with your transmission and the dealership or SOA determines it will not be covered under warranty, they are still under obligation to fix your window regulator if it breaks, as long as the window regulator was not damaged due to outside influences.

If you modify and/or abuse your car, that is not reason for your warranty to be voided. IT HAS TO BE PROVEN that the modification and/or abuse caused the defect. And even then your warranty is not voided, the warranty claim was just denied. Other things on your vehicle not affected by the modification and/or abuse are still covered.

Most people think that because something was not covered under warranty that their warranty is automatically voided. They don't understand that just that claim was denied.

If you are ever told that your warranty is "voided", make sure they are saying the ENTIRE warranty is voided, and not that the warranty claim was denied. If they say that the warranty is voided, get it in writing and call SOA. Most likely it is just the claim that was denied.

It is also possible to get just portions of your warranty voided. For instance, if you have had your car painted because of scratches or you change the color, then only your paint warranty could be voided. The paint is no longer original so SOA is under no obligation to cover it. It is now the responsiblity of whomever painted it.

Sorry for the long rant, it just makes me mad when people slam dealerships and SOA for "voiding" warranties, when in all acutallity, it is not.

CLIFF NOTES: Your warranty can only be voided for few reasons. Most of the time it is just your warranty claim that has been denied. The rest of your warranty remains in effect
