A map is a what tells your computer that manages your car what to do. Air flow and gas ratios timing etc etc.

With keeping the car stock you can start with a tune.

P3 Imports
Underground Performance
Element Auto

All 3 can provide you with a local tune and various engine management options, as well as boost control options. This will provide you with that "extra kick" you're looking for. If you want to get a little more kick without pushing the car too much you can start looking at an exhaust kit + tune as well.

There are a few ways to get started tuning your own car. Read some how to docs provided by members here. Cobb also has some how to docs posted.

The first thing to do is understand that you need to make changes slowly and only one thing at a time initially to get a feel for what you are doing. Always log your results and only log what you need, don't go trying to log every variable.

Realize that mechanical limits exist and avoid tuning something that runs poorly to begin with. Try to start with a clean running, clear bill of health car. Some times you won't know you have something weak mechanically until you turn up the power, this is what tends to promote bad rumors about tuning.

I'm not going to get into it much because there are entire forums for this information here. In a nutshell you have two main ways to self tune.

1. Cobb access port with the free downloaded tuning software. (expensive and restricted to one car, real time tuning makes it faster and easier to tune this way however.)

2. ECUFlash with a tactrix cable. (less expensive and you can tune an unlimited amount of cars including other makes and models, does not currently support real time tuning, you must pull over and reflash ecu every change you make)

Read, read, read. Lots of info!

Come here with specific questions and I will post answers for you.

You can still do some minor changes tune wise to the car but nothing dramatic. Our non turbo customers like to have the throttle response sharpened up a bit and if you have high octane fuels you can lean things out and bump timing a little for some extra kick. You can also make some minor adjustments to pickup an extra MPG or so.

I see alot of WRX's that claim to have an STi motor built by P3. Due to 'built', I assume it's not a motor swap. What do you guys put into your STi motor builds and can you PM me a quote from wrx platform?

Regarding Cobb access ports. There's a free software? How can I get it because I have a v2 know a little (basics) about tuning and have logged a little but can't see the tables because I don't have the program. I have two maps set on the AP which I use but I wanted to see them in more detail and possibly make my own later.

what are you asking hear??? built motors are what most call something that is built up with better parts than stock, weather it be drop in pistons or the shortblock disassembled and reassembled with better crank bearings rods and pistons to the entire assembly heads and all reassembled with better everything. costs vary.

I thought that the STi motor was somehow fundamentally different from the wrx motor of the same generation, What I was asking specifically is what is swapped to convert a wrx motor into a STi motor official. The question was not "how do you build a motor?" but rather" how do you build a stock wrx motor into something you can call a proper STi motor?" I should have been more clear.

it's people swapping a STI 2.5l motor physically into a wrx car.

Ej257(sti) into say a 02-05 wrx which is a 2.0l Ej205 for example

making a wrx now have a STI motor or block.

usually the harness would have to be swapped in some cases.

this must be asked a lot but is it worth it to get a tune while stock to make a wrx run better on the lower octane Alaska gas?

Prolly wouldnt hurt. But if ya plan on upgrading parts just wait until then. Its 150-250 per tune. Gets pricey

Reading some of what has been posted there are some fundamental pieces of info missing here. Without going into detail there are some differences between WRX and STI motors but the differences start to vary depending on year. And to call a motor an STI build may simply indicate parts from an STI motor was used or STI spec or better parts were upgraded.

Obviously 2.0 wrx is a different engine up to 2005. This is noted and does not apply..In the case of a 2.0 WRX when we do an STI build they are upgraded with 2.5 blocks we build from scratch then reuse the 2.0 heads. Obviously it really depends on the customers wants, needs, and budget.

After the WRX went to the 2.5 block the differences pre 2008 STI were not as many between the WRX and STI engine as a whole. The 2.5 block casts between the WRX and STI are basically the same. The differences with the heads are subtle until 2008+ STI obviously when AVCS was added to the exhaust cams as well.

For instance when we build up a 2006+ wrx we upgrade the internals such as pistons, rods, cranks, etc. The final result is an engine that can make great numbers just the same as an STI engine and much better. In many cases depending on the customers budget we would only upgrade pistons as the crank and rods are plenty strong enough in the newer blocks for their needs. On an STI this is quite common to just upgrade pistons to meet the customers needs. We have also gone to custom light weight crank shafts that are cross drilled for better oiling and so far almost eliminated bearing issues.

Some basic research will reveal how many parts engine wise are actually shared between the WRX and STI. This has been discussed many many times.

So in closing its not really engine swaps that are going on here although what the final product can be is like having a new or swapped engine. Again its really up to the customers requirements. They like to have it their way!

If your interested in a quote we will need to know more about your car and your needs so we can discuss what fits. Feel free to call, text, or pm.

Required? No...The cars own methods of self tuning are good enough.

Would it help? Yes. The cars are tuned from the factory to be conservative and able to be reliable on many qualities of fuel and many diverse environments. Dialing the tune in even with no supporting mods can create a smoother and of course more fun driving experience however!

If its a new car consider warranty issues down the road as some dealers tend to be warranty void happy with these cars.

WTH happened?? my boost gauge went up to peak but the car itself didnt do anything, after i hit about 4500 5k rpm and realized that boost wasnt kicking in i stopped drove normal with an easy maybe 25% throttle accel and my AP was reading that i was hittin target boost?? please help! thanks in advance...

The AP uses the MAP sensor on the throttle body to read boost. I don't know where your gauge is connected but typically that is teed into the BPV or BOV hose which the source is coming from the intake manifold. In some cases there can be delay or no updates on the AP when logging a lot of variables.

I can only speculate on whats happened here but if the boost gauge reads boost and the AP reads no boost then the MAP sensor may have failed, the AP may not have been updating properly, things like that. If the MAP sensor really went bad I would expect to see a check engine light but its possible you don't see one if the circumstances are correct.

The bottom line is there is not enough info here to help. Please define " I didn't go any where" statement. Did the car sputter? did it have any smoke coming from exhaust, was it making any sort of noise that wasn't normal to you?

Is it possible your experiencing a clutch failure or slip? RPM increase without speed increase? aka not going anywhere...

That's my only assumption, I went in to have my car dyno and tuned but they had to stop mid tune because they said my clutch was was slipping @ 17 psi.. So they turned it down to 13.5 and said come back when you get a new clutch installed... My RPMs went up like normal but it's not like my car didnt accelerate.. It did just very.. Verrrry slowly.. I just purchased an ACT XTSS so I'm hopin to get that installed ASAP
