Default Peaky Blinders (BBC) (Netflix)

Anyone watching this?

Originally a BBC show now showing on Netflix. We have season one while they're airing the second season over there. Watching the first episode now. I like it! Stars Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow from Batman).

It's about a street gang circa 1919 in England.

I made it through half of the first episode. It didn't hold my attention.

:highfive:

It's my new fave show. Going to watch them on BBC iPlayer since Netflix won't get season 2 for a while. The cliffhanger for season one is pretty good!

I recently finished watching S1 and I loved it.
The cinematography is great and the actors are fantastic.

S2 will have Tom Hardy, so I'm really looking forward to it.

BTW, I read somewhere S2 will be on Netflix in November.

Yeah, watching S2 on BBC (via Hola). Only through two episodes but I'm liking it. Hardy rocks. And you also have Locke from GoT!

Now that it is on Netflix, I started Season 2.

I'm up to S2E4 and I am loving the show more and more.
The soundtrack of S2 is awesome.

Tom Hardy, as expected, is really killing it and my only gripe is that he has hasn't gotten more screen time.
The writing continues to be superb and I hope they continue with the series for at least couple of more seasons.

If you haven't started watching this show, you are a fool and you are missing out on an incredible show.

If you watched it and didn't like it, you are the type of person who shops on Thanksgiving day in Walmart.

We just need Rug to watch it. Then everyone else will. And yes, if anyone can get through The Wire's first few episodes (I stuck with it after much griping), you can easily watch this show. In fact, it's not slow, so I25 and Toby are high.

Hardy's character is the best. Accent is amazing. Hope he pops up in season three. I'd imagine he will.

Don't want to get all spoilery since this show is so fresh, but I bet the American will get some screen time next season. Maybe a major enemy for Thomas.

Either that, or an ally in Blinders' "export" business.

I love shows set in the past, so I thought Peaky Blinders would be an easy hit for me, but it just didn't hold my interest after about three episodes.

Does it improve drastically later in the first season / in the second season?

I thought the show was fairly dynamic throughout, but yes, it does pick up some speed.
I was pretty hooked from S1E1 and it just kept getting better (for me).

Same here, ms3p. I didn't feel like it was slow at all.

Yeah it picks up. They had to lay out who was who at first. Once they do that it'sall about fighting, money making, race fixing, power grabs, family, and of course the story arc.

Maybe it just takes the right kind of personality to like it. I grew up on Oi! music, ska, all things British. Movies like Romper Stomper and Green Street Hooligans are right up my alley. So a series about an English street gang? Sign me up!

Serioulsy though, if you can take The Wire, you can take this. The Wire is slow as hell. This isn't. Plus, it has boobs.

It's not that I found the story too slow; pacing was actually fine.
I typically love British stuff, so that's not the problem either.

I think it's just that I really didn't *like* any of the characters enough to really care about the storyline. I mean... I somewhat *disliked* Sam Neill's character, but not enough where I was rooting for the other guys.

For British period stuff, I think Penny Dreadful and Downton Abbey (flamesuit on) are superior. What Downton lacks in action, it makes up for in writing, and Penny Dreadful has that injection of grittiness that Downton lacks.

A better comparison though - if we leave the confines of British shows and thing and move the setting up a few decades - is Boardwalk Empire, which I feel is significantly better than Peaky Blinders as well. I mean... I *liked* the Nucky Thompson character and several others in the show, so my "give a crap" level was higher when watching it.

The last episode of season two was one of the best episodes of television I've seen. But I will agree that there is no anti-hero really. Thomas has yet to give us any reason to really root for him. Aunt Polly is the only one you really feel for. Maybe Arthur. Plus I have the hots for Grace. Dat nose bridge gets me.

As the show goes on, the characters get more developed.
The workings and relationships of the family are a "character" of their own.

I think the writing is just as good as Empire's and I find the story line more fluid.

However, this show may just not be for you. That of course would make you wrong, but such thing happen.

Not to mention, the show is brand new. It takes a while for a show to blow up and kick ass. Hell it's only been 12 episodes. Silly BBC.

Season 1 was really fun and good. Season 2 was good but a little too slow/heavy, IMO. Sort of getting a little too predictable for the level of writing I expect form good British shows.

Predictable? Are you high? I thought the turns and twists of the whole show have been pretty good. I don't understand why more people aren't rooting for Thomas, who is the obvious hero of the show. This guy has plans, and smarts. Plus he is now also a spy/agent of Churchill, which should make the plots pretty cool as they intertwine both high society (money, hookers, blow, snobs) and their working-class gang roots.

There was def a nice twist at the end of season one. But I knew how the grave scene at the end of season two would play out. I hope they really get into it with some higher-ups in season three. I like Thomas, but like with Sons of Anarchy it's hard to swallow that a small band of gangsters can do so much.

Still trying to keep spoilers down but who do you guys think he's going to marry? I'd assume his baby mama, but the other one means more money and a sweet house.
