thats some time! my dealer said a few days for the engine to come in and a few days for install. i also get a loaner for free. update: here it is 2 days and later the engine is at the dealer! getting a crosstrek loaner today and dropping the forester off.
ill add a few things about the loaner crosstrek. i love the vehicle but man it needs some more power! this fb20 is a complete dog! also the steering has no feedback. i think its electric these days. i like more feedback. we should be getting the fozzy back soon with the engine installed.
update; the dealer called, then engine install is done. gonna pick it up later. ill report back in a bit on any issues, oil usage etc.

Good read regarding Suaru's extended warranty in response to the class action lawsuit results:

Under the proposed settlement, members of the class will receive an extension of the existing express powertrain limited warranty to 8 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first but ONLY for oil consumption related issues (or an extra year of protection if the driver has exceeded these parameters at the time the notice was issued. ) This warranty "will cover all costs associated with oil consumption tests and repairs performed by an authorized Subaru retailer pursuant to the applicable Subaru Technical Service Bulletin." In addition, class members may qualify for cash reimbursement for previous out-of-pocket repairs and engine oil purchased as a result of the problem.

My wife's 2014 failed the consumption test a couple weeks ago and is in the shop now getting a new shortblock. Should have it back by the end of the week. So far the process has been pretty painless.

SOA has taken on the practice that many other manufacturers have: casting more engine cases per mold. Since material is lost in every casting, tolerances grow wider. Factor is thin weight oil and you've got a problem.

Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi. They all are running into the same issues.

Personally, I've seen good luck with scrapping the 0w/20 for a good 5w/30 or 40. Just give it some time to warm up and it's fine

Once it is out of warranty that is exactly what I plan to do. When the time comes that also has the added benefit of allowing me to run the same oil in both cars which will be nice.

Initially, I was planning to do the same: use 0W30 or 5W30 after the 5y/60k powertrain warranty.
But, since Subaru is willing to replace these short blocks, I decided to submit my FB25 to a controlled consumption test in order to get a replacement.
As I said before, not only the new short block does not visibly consume the M1 0W20 EP oil that's currently in the sump but I would swear the newly assembled engine makes more power ! That engine is just running much better that the original one ever did.

Hopefully I didn't jinx myself... she only made it halfway home with the "repaired" car and the check engine light came on. Waiting to hear what is wrong now. lol

Apparently it was a bad thermostat. Just got the car home and all seems to be well.

its not just you. my wifes fozzy before the shortblock was getting low on power. since the new engine, it feels much better and uses no oil soo far. its been almost 2 months soo far. when i changed her plugs before the engine, they were covered in oil even into the threads. it got pretty bad. my dealer was awesome and had the sb in stock in 2 days and the engine swapped in 4 days. i use 5w30 valvoline synpower in the fozzy and my dd 14 legacy. my wrx gets good ol rotella 5w40. she has never used oil since new in 2008.

Just to follow up... we have put about 2500 miles on the new shortblock and it hasn't burned a drop of oil!

Hello all,
I'm contemplating purchasing a used 2015 Subaru Impreza Sport Limited automatic CVT with 20,000 miles. The car looks to be in great shape and will take it to my mechanic before purchasing.

I've been researching oil consumption issues like crazy, but have been unable to arrive at a solid conclusion regarding 2015 Impreza CVT oil consumption. I know that a settlement was just reached on the oil consumption issue that covers short block replacements for up to 2013 automatic Imprezas and up to 2015 manual Imprezas.

Has anyone here with an automatic 2015 or 2016 encountered the dreaded excessive oil consumption issue? I have no problem checking my oil occasionally and topping off once (maybe twice) between oil changes, but I don't want to be adding oil every 1000 miles.

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

I daily drive a 2013 Impreza sedan with just over 53k. I bought the vehicle with 39k miles on it and have since done a variety of driving, including several long trips. My average commute to work is between 8-15 miles and let the car properly warm up prior to driving. I do have a lead foot and tend to drive and accelerate pretty fast.

With that being said, I have been through 2 oil changes with my vehicle. Both oil changes have been at manufacturer spec oil weight and mileage. Both times I have emptied my oil and placed it in a 5qt jug that the new oil came from, I had exactly 5 quarts with no oil consumption whatsoever.

If you like the car, buy it. Oil consumption is not a big deal. Every car, no matter mileage, brand, etc, should have the oil checked at certain times between oil changes. If you have to add a little oil, big deal. I have found no studies that show that little oil consumption is ever a bad thing.

Says the person who doesn't have oil consumption. While some consumption can be considered normal, the consumption I had (over 1qt/1500 miles) was beyond excessive.

Well 4 months and 7,500 miles later with the new engine here my update:

NO OIL BURNING AT ALL

I changed out the dealership oil after the first 1000 miles. I put in valvoline max life full synthetic 0w-20 after that and put 6500 on it.

The dipstick never went down any

2013 Impreza here. I change the oil around every 5000 miles with Mobil 1. The car has almost 80k miles on it. There are times when I'm 3000 miles in and I'll have to top the oil off because it's missing a liter. Then there are times when the car decides to only sip a few ounces over the course of the 5000 miles. I always have a liter in the back seat at all times because the car is pretty unpredictable.

'16 Impreza, just under 15k miles. Do oil changes at the recommended 6k interval. First 6k was fine. Low oil light came on about 1000 miles before the second 6k change. Low oil light came on again yesterday, about 2800 miles since my last change. Seems that the more it breaks in, the more it burns. Taking to a dealer tonight for a consumption test.

Are you kidding me? 5 years later and we're still seeing oil consumption issues? Can't say I would ever buy a 2012-2016 Impreza now...

The dealer told me that they resolved the short block issue, but manuals drink some oil between changes, just not enough to be considered "excessive" by Subaru (about a quart every 4k). My excessive consumption may have been brought about by some recent abuse, I pulled a Saturn out of the mud a couple weeks ago. We will see how it turns out, but I don't expect to fail the consumption test.
