Googlefu tells me that using Windows to build the RAID provides better performance than using the BIOS. (Plus its easier)

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/...intenance.html

Also, why so heavy on the motherboard/psu, if only doing single 970? Just saying, you could save some bucks.

I don't think that one example proves Windows RAID has better performance, mostly though I would be more concerned with reliability/recovery, that is, if something happens will you be able to recover. Google: Windows RAID/dynamic drive failures, I'm sure you'll see a lot as I did when I lost my data because windows wouldn't recognize the 2 X 3TB dynamic drive that it created a year or so later .

Ask me about rally racing VW's or dsm's or XC mountain bikes and I can talk your ear off.

Dumb question - what is the difference between that and a 120Hz TV? Quicker response?

What is the resolution of 4k and what monitors do that?
On TVs it is often not a true 120hz refresh rate since they utilize frame interpolation. Instead of displaying 120 unique frames it displays 60 frames like a 60hz monitor and then duplicates each frame once. This leads to what is referred to as the "soap opera effect".

On a 120hz monitor it only shows each frame once, meaning 120 unique frames are displayed in one second. For watching TV it really doesn't matter, but for gaming if you're going to go 120hz it needs to be a true 120hz monitor. Some TVs have this, but they are few and far between.

120hz on a monitor will feel "quicker". 4K is 3840x2160.

A monitor like that is really not something I'd consider, but that's what the cheap end of 4K looks like. With only a 24" screen the scaling might end up being complete **** and it will be hard to read webpages and such in 4K. On top of that, most of these monitors will not do 60hz at 4K resolution, so you end up with a really pretty slideshow. Response times are also higher (4ms vs 1ms).

With a single 970 you're not going to be playing most games in 4K at an acceptable frame rate anyways. And many don't even support it. I see no reason to go with 4K at this point in time.

I would think that even 1440p is a stretch on a single 970, if you want to play at High or Ultra settings.

Most likely.

Hell I can't even hold a steady 100 FPS in GTA V on medium/high at 1080p with my 970.

Gimme dat 980ti and we're in business though.

OK, so if I'm looking at 1080p is that $200 one (or one like it) that 42 posted the trick.

I do occasional photo editing so I think I want IPS for that reason for better colors.

I posted the same link and it turned into a bull**** eBay redirect...

It's doing the same to yours?

I mean to post it at Newegg, where it's on sale right now.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on something like that. I have a 27" iMac, the screen is nice and large but I think I'm OK with a 24" for my rig.

edit - just ordered. With the $20 off code and if the $20 MIR works it's a no-brainer.

I have a single 970 and 1440p monitor. My fps ranges from 80-160 fps in BF4 on a mix of high and ultra settings. Usually, it's steady around 120-150 with g-sync on.

Star Citizen on the other hand, I have to lower to 1080p/high or the game crashes.

Any suggestions for a better case? I really dont care what it looks like. Theres a apretty good chance of me adding SLI this winter so I wanted to make sure I am able to do that. Hence the mobo and PSU. I also already own the SSD I just included it on that list to know what was going to be used.

On the i5 v. i7 front, I will probably start ripping and compressing blu rays. Should I still go with the i5 or will I need the i7 for that? I dont do a whole lot of intense multi tasking so maybe the i7 isnt required?

It has a door on the side if you need to make changes without taking the cover off. It comes it black too.

Silverstone has some nicer HTPC styled cases, so does Fractal. Both have varieties that'll fit dual GPUs I believe, it's really up to you.

The i7 will definitely compress faster, not sure how much, and is it worth it to you? How many blu rays are we talking?

That's my point. 4k gaming is possible with older hardware. 760 4GB didn't break the bank and neither did the 750. If I didn't buy the 4GB version back in the day I would have been screwed.

The 760's use CUDA 3.0 while the 750 is CUDA 5.0 so I direct all the CUDA crap to that for best results.

I have somewhere around 100 transition mediums that I'd like to make into .mkv's. It would be a lot of setting and forgetting, like doing it overnight. If going down to an i5 is possible without any major losses I am willing to save the $100 on that. Would an i5-4690k be sufficient for my needs, as suggested by that builder thingy I posted?

This is the type of feedback I'm looking for! Thanks for the help guise.

Here is a link

If you rip all those DVDs to ISO and then set up a task to encode to mkv overnight, then you are really not saving much in terms of time.

Im ripping BD's but that link is still helpful. Thanks! The 15% average boost isn't worth the $100 to me and I will downgrade to the i5. Need to do more case shopping tonight.

What small parts, like cables, do I need? Will I need an adapter for my SSD to mount into my case? Anything else along those lines? I just need a general list, I can find the specific parts on my own.

Probably won't need any additional cables/adapters unless your specific case/build requires them, try to decide on a case and then see what fits and what you might need.

I would suggest a motherboard usb pins to usb adapter. Cheap, and could be very useful.
Like for a xbox controller receiver. You could keep it inside the case. Less cables outside.
Other than that, the mobo usually comes with everything.

I need a CPU cooler.
Yesterday I was playing Dead Space 3 and the stock cooler was as loud as a hairdryer. Checked it out and it was running at 70C with the fan over 3k rpms.

Took the cooler off, cleaned it (clogged), new thermal paste. Temps dropped to high 50s, but fan is still going full speed.

My case is a Thermaltake V3 Black. Seems like I cant fit **** in that case. Ill see what I can fit.

The good news about it all is that the 970 is dead quiet. Fans running at 1600 rpms, and dropping to 0rpms once I quit the game

I found a Fractal ARC Midi 2 that seems like it should be legit. Is this a good choice? This one appears to be the exact same with the exception of not having a window and is half the cost. Can I just go with that? Looks aren't super important to me.
