Can't find the IT thread. looking for advice or recommendations...

Aunt moved in next door to grandmother, because she's a saint. xmas gift is a tech upgrade for grandma because she loves that ****. A router that my aunt can host on her IP that will wirelessly connect to devices a house over in suburbia. Brick outside walls, 1/4 acre lots. Is a high gain antenna the best idea. Unidirectional is not an option since everyone in my aunt's house will also use it.

Thx for any ideas or suggestions.

are they RIGHT next to eachother? I would consider running cat 5e over. Easiest and cheapest solution.

They are right next door. Is there a wireless option that would be reliable? I'm 1000 miles away and will be home for 7 days over the holiday. Won't have much time to dig a trench, conduit and lay cable, run through walls in and out, etc.

I guess when I saw the fiber to ethernet adapters at that price, I hoped I could score some transceivers/receiver sfp modules for sub-$200 and it'd be easy, but the issue with the various connectors is making this problematic.

So i guess the solution is to either find a tech with a fiber splicing machine to fuse in some LC connections that I can get super cheap modules for, or just make sure we use conduit the full path(I know he's using some for at least a portion) and ground the conduit to the house at least and just use Cat 6 instead of the fiber.

What is the grounding hazard and insurance issue for running Cat 5/6?

Why not just have the cable company bring in new service into the home? They'll dig/trench as needed for no extra cost. Most ISP routers come with built in WiFi too. It's the most hands-off solution that comes to mind. Otherwise see below:

Charge had essentially the same challenge as you've described, and has already deemed the wireless bridging route is simply not reliable enough for his buddy.

I'm sure there is something out there that, technically, would work. However the variables would be 1)cost and 2) reliability.

Considering you're 1000 miles away and the initial point of contact should there be an issue, the best solution would be to run Cat6 between houses if getting a separate service is out of the question.

I doubt you want to spend your holiday breaj doing manual labot but...A handy-man should be able to trench with a machine, lay down some pvc pipe and fish a wire through.

You do not need to dig a trench for Cat cable. No conduit needed. hell, just drill a hole through the walls, these wires don't carry high voltage or anything. Seriously, run it along a fence with some staples. As long as there are no sharp bends in the wire, it should be fine. If you have a friend who does IT in the area, have them bring over a crimping tool and test it. Otherwise, you will need to learn how to do this yourself, but its not hard and there are a million guides on the internet.

Well, the 250D might be short lived. Preordered an NCASE M1 V5. Now I just need the Corsair SF600 to release. Right now the Silverstone 600w SFX power supply does not appear to be the best choice (many negative reviews).

Nice to see another Ncase user (or soon to be)! What are the other parts of the build?

Didn't even know Corsair was coming out with an SFX power supply, hopefully they can get the fan to be quiet as that's the most brought up issue people have with SFX.

Asus Impact VIII, 6700k, 16GB Vengeance LP 2666, H100i GTX (that'll be tight), 780 GTX (will upgrade with Pascal), 240GB SSD, 960GB SSD, and 1TB HDD.

Very nice. I'm running a 4770k, 8GB Crucial something, Noctua C12p, EVGA GTX 770 with 240GB SSD, 480GB SSD and 1TB HDD (2.5").

Very nice. The only part I'm worried about fitting is the H100i GTX. I can't find any pictures of one being used, and only found a forum post. I do have slim fans though, if needed. I've got a couple months to get it figured out though.

I remember seeing a few guys do it, shouldn't have much of a problem. You're not using the HDD side bracket so I'm guessing your HDD is 2.5"? Or you're mounting it on the floor?

I'll mount the platter drive to the floor, and the 2.5" drives stacked in the front. If I can find another way to mount the 2.5" I'll do that because I'd LIKE to use an optical drive, but if I can't, it's not a huge deal as I'm not using one now.

Yeah, that's certainly possible too...but if it were me doing the work it would be a little more than half-assed

I've been following the M1 thread over on [H] for a long while now... I can't use it for any of my main uses, but man... I really want some excuse to build one =)

The truth is, for anything I could want to build the M1 for, I could just get a NUC that is even smaller, and it would work just as well (considering I already have a gaming PC and wouldn't be building the M1 for gaming)

I could build an M1 as another server, but would still want more storage options if I did that.

I wish I would have discovered it sooner. Wouldn't have bought the 250D. Buuuut I suppose I can use the excuse that I had to house the mITX build in something until the V5 ships.

Posted it in the Fallout thread, but got my GTX 970 in and experienced my first 4k/60hz gaming last night. My god its beautiful. On Fallout 4 I was able to get 4k/60hz with Ultra/maxed everything except medium God Rays and 8x AF, and that was with only about 10 mins of quick tweaking. Was able to get average of 35-39 FPS in most cases, never saw lower than 33fps, and got up to 60fps in some areas. So freaking clean though.

I'm at 1080p 60FPS on max settings. I've been gaming on a 17" laptop or the Xbox for years. Things are so beautiful now.

Looking to buy some new headphones. I'm looking at getting the ASTRO A30 or Astro A40. Thoughts?

Well, with the H100i GTX not fitting the 250D, and likely not fitting the Ncase M1, I sent the H100i GTX to a buddy of mine, and he paid for a new H75 and sent it to me. The H75 is cooling a tad better than my H100 was (but I was using the SP120 Quiet fans), so I'm pretty happy.

I know Astra is common in console gaming. I could never justify the coin for them. Why the a30 or a40? What are you doing with them?
