I like Silverstone cases, that IN WIN case looks hideous . The GPU you picked is weaker than the other one you had by a good bit.

This may be a little bigger than you want but it's pretty sweet for the price. I just put my build together using it. It's nice to be able to switch the fans to a lower speed when you don't need the flow. I added 2 fans to the front and on high she moves quite a bit of air now.

Up your budget by ~$80 and get a reference 760 card, or $100 for a superclocked 760.

I've got a surround sound headset I'd like to use on my PC, but it requires Dolby Digital via Optical to work. It's my understanding that the realtek onboard sound on my mobo (Asrock Z77 extreme4) is capable of handling the job, but the cheap bastards didn't pony up for the Dolby license, and thus it no workie. I've found some altered realtek drivers that will apparently enable the DDL (and DTS) options, but it sounds like a PITA. Win7 digital driver signing has to be disabled or you need to run a freeware cocktail of crap in test mode and watermark removers and other stuff I barely understand.

Then there's audio via HDMI on my 7970 connected to a receiver which I suspect won't do surround sound gaming either, but even if it did, it wouldn't help me with the headset.

*sigh* Researching this has given me a headache.

TLDR - Is a sound card going to be my only (read:cheapest) option for surround sound gaming on a headset?

Most of your build looks like great choices for your stated purpose.

Personally I would get a different case. The R4 is a great choice, and NZXT makes a couple nice sub $100 cases. Silverstone makes some great high end cases (or at least they used to), but their economy boxes aren't that great (or at least they didn't used to be).

I would get a 500gb SSD, the Samsung EVO is great, fast and economical.

For you PSU, I would look at Corsair or Seasonic, or if on a budget, Rosewill. EVGA makes great GPUs, and I heartily recommend them for any nVidia GPUs, but others still make better PSUs (although the new SuperFlower based SuperNova line seems pretty solid). It is just that I don't have personal experience with the EVGA while I have a lot with Corsair and Seasonic. At least you can rest assured that EVGA has great customer service if you do need it.

You talked about dual monitors, but you have a measely 22" (and an AOC at that) in your build list. I suggest considering one larger monitor rather than 2 smaller ones. I suggest a 27" 2560 x 1440 WQHD, which has not quite the same square inches as 2x22", nearly the same pixels per inch, and is far easier and more efficient to use in a desktop environment. You can get a cheap Korean one for under $400, so it is not much more than 2x22". Just make sure your video card has a dual link DVI output (the EVGA you list does have it).

However, I am thinking it is near time to upgrade to something that can more comfortably run ArcGIS, which is a very memory intensive program.

I've built a total of two computers (both years ago), and I am therefore largely uneducated on what parts are out there and what the hierarchies are for different components.

Let me first emphasize that I don't need to run [insert current popular game here] at maxed settings with eleventybillion FPS. While I may play some games and do some graphics work, graphics processing is secondary for me.

My budget is basically whatever it needs to be to get the job done. I built my e8500 PC using mostly mid-grade parts that I figured offered the best bang for the buck and would still be adequate for years. I believe I succeeded; I'd like to do the same with this build.

I have decided to upgrade to dual monitors, which I believe will greatly increase my productivity.

I plan on using an SSD for all primary programs, and two 1 TB hard drives in RAID 1 so that I don't lose all my HD pr0n.

Please, tear me apart...

Yes it is hideous but I was looking for something with better cable management. I see the flaw in my reasoning...I am trying to make the inside look good while disregarding the exterior.

I was going to reply snarkily with a snarky, "WHY??? You just want me to spend more money for something I don't need." But after more research, it seems like you are right. Given what I *might* do with this PC, it probably is a good idea to spend the extra money on a better GPU. I've chosen an EVGA 760 Superclocked. Though I think I have to evaluate my needs more to be sure.

Decided on a pricier Silverstone case. Thanks.

I swapped the 256 GB for a 500 GB EVO drive. I know more=better, but does the 500 GB drive actually perform better? In other words, I don't really need the extra space for programs on the SSD...but should I get a bigger drive anyways?

Changed the PSU to a semi-modular Seasonic.

I think your most valuable advise is regarding the monitor. I was in the ~6-year old mindset that a 22" monitor was big, so I wanted to match another 22" monitor to my current Acer.

Thanks everybody. My wallet hurts more.

I was not trying to dissuade you from the EVGA PSU, it looks like they are entering the big league of PSU makers (or at least remarketers). SuperFlower is a good unit, they are just rebranding it. SuperFlower does not sell in USA.

Get a great monitor, you will never regret it.

We built my friend's last PC with that case, I really like it, room for wiring easily too. The front fan is a 3 pin fan and I don't believe that motherboard will allow voltage controlling the fan speed for a variable profile, just an FYI. You can always use a resistor (I don't think the case comes with one) to run it slower than full speed or buy a PWM fan to replace it if you want variable speed.

I would get a gold power supply, modular doesn't really matter for this case IMO, it has plenty of room for extra wires, we ran a non-modular in my friend's build. Modular is fine and all but I would rather a non-modular gold than a modular bronze for the same price.

These are good:

First review of the Asus Rog Swift PG278Q (27" 1440p G-sync) is up. Looks spiffy.

http://www.kitguru.net/peripherals/m...ti-rog-matrix/

The lesser 24" should be out this month too I believe.

REVIEW SCORE: July 4th, 2014 at 6:53 pm - AuthorZardon
Today we review the highly anticipated Asus ROG Swift PG278Q. This 27 inch Nvidia G-SYNC monitor runs at WQHD 2560×1440 resolution, features a 144hz refresh rate and a 1ms (gtg) response time to cater to the most demanding gamer. The panel features a ***8216;turbo' button to automatically select refresh rates of 60hz, 120hz and 144hz. The monitor is due for release very soon, and is already available on pre-order for £719.99 inc vat from Overclockers UK.

Maybe that is wrong, other sites turn up a $800 guesstimation. Even at that, still waaaaaaaaay too expensive.

EDIT: Appears UK just gets totally boned

Yea I think that's taxes and other crap driving the price up. I don't think that's way to expensive, especially considering there is nothing like it on the market .

I pulled the trigger. Final parts list:

Case: Silverstone TJ08B-E mATX
PSU: SeaSonic M12II 620 Watt
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K
Hard Drive 1: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD
Hard Drive 2: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
External Hard Drive: Silicon Power Armor A30 1TB
Memory: G.SKILL Value 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1600
Motherboard: ASUS Z97M-PLUS
GPU: EVGA GTX 760 SuperClocked
Optical Drive: Pioneer Blu-ray Burner
Monitor: QNIX QX2710 2560x1440 27" (THANKS bcblues)

Everything is ordered except for the case and a few SATA cables. I reached my card's credit limit (only $1500) so I had to pay it off (online) before I could buy the rest .

The final price will be just shy of $1600 all told ($1300 computer only). That's more than I expected to spend, but I think I'll be happy. It were the decisions to buy a better monitor, pricier case, and higher end GPU that really raised the bill. Those were decisions made based on the advice of members here, and I am very glad that you gave your opinions. Thank you all.

Looks like a solid build that will last you a while, essentially what I wanted when I specced out a similar build earlier this year.

Nice case, Love mine

Make sure you use Asus Fan Xpert. I have mine set to 40% at a min and it only scale up after I go past 30C. It's basically silent unless I am playing a game and even then its very quiet.

Okay I'm really confused now. Something is awry with these hyperlinks. After reading this comment, I clicked on my link (that you quoted) and it brought me to an Amazon.com listing of the 250GB 840 EVO. I started typing this response...

'I actually bought it at Newegg, and I could have sworn I hyperlinked that text to Newegg. I definitely would not have intentionally linked it to Amazon .'

Then I clicked the link again and it brought me to Newegg, but to some weird 250GB 840 EVO listing priced at $228 instead of the normal listing where it is priced at $149.99.

Here's the bottom line: I got it for 129.99 after a Newegg promo code for $20 off. I actually forgot to include the promo code on checkout but after emailing them, Newegg CS credited my card $20.

Edit: By the way, I bought everything off Newegg except for the case which I bought at SuperBiiz (It was $23 cheaper there with a promo code, including shipping). Oh, and the monitor I bought off eBay. That's all.

I'm stoked.

Yeah, they had some great sales on Samsung EVO SSDs over the 4th holiday. I almost pulled the trigger on a 1TB for my laptop, but just couldn't justify it, as my car now needs some work after breaking the A arm at the autocross last week.

Done! Well, the build part anyway. There's no OS yet. I am happy with how things turned out.
