I think this is my first post in the thread..because I know I can't control myself when it comes to getting new gear...so I've been proud of myself for being happy with what I have. But I'd like to tap you guys for advice. I've got an Onkyo Tx-Nr616 (AVR) that I've had for 5 years now, and it's been great.

But I finally got hit with the common error that it doesn't pickup the audio stream until I guess it's warmed up a bit.(My own diagnosis, after a little while I'll switch sources back and forth and it'll pop in finally). I put in my serial number and I'm covered by Onkyo's replacement offer. But it's still gonna cost me.

Onkyo TX-NR696 for ~$500 (canadian), ~$375USD

Looks great, but of course now I'm looking up alternatives, Yamaha, Denon, etc...

Anything that might be better for that price?

Not familiar with those models specifically. IME it comes down to what receiver has the options you want (X number of HDMI inputs, X number of optical, X number of coax, has Y feature, etc.).

If 2 or more models have exactly what you want, I'd head over to avsforum and do a deep dive into those specific models. See what bugs each model has and whether that's a deal breaker for you or not.

If you don't mind refurbished stuff, check out accessories4less.com. I've had good experience with stuff from there (2 receivers and a camera). Can get a lot of bang for your buck. Stock changes every week or two.

I've had good experiences with onkyo, yamaha, and denon receivers. Yamaha is/was my favorite sound wise. But haven't bought a yamaha receiver in... 20 years (moved to separates). My 20 & 23 year old yamaha receivers are still mostly working - they've lived hard lives.

I've had poor experiences with Sony and Onkyo receivers in the past. But I think find the options you want will narrow you down pretty quickly. I've got a Denon now and from what I remember reading on various AV sites/forums (like AVS) was that the Denon room correction software was better than most of the other offerings in the sub $750 price range.

I'm a Denon fanboy. After having trouble with every Sony and Onkyo I receiver I've owned, I went Denon and have been pleased ever since. That said, I could easily say the same about Yamaha had I gone that route instead of Denon. I'll never know!

Sort of blows my mind to see people have issues with their Onkyo receivers. I have had 3 now, and no issues with any of them. Just stepped up to a used TX-NR1030 for more power and Atmos ability, otherwise my TX-NR717 was still great, sold it to recoup half of what I paid for the newer one.
My wife has an older one running at her place, I forget the model now, but I bought it new in 1998 and it has been great, and she only uses it for 2 speakers anyways.

The HDMI ports (or maybe just the output) on my Onkyo receiver died. I had to replace it with an external switch.

I've had 2 Onkyo receivers die on me. The first one was a 505 I think and it just stopped working. I replaced it with a 606 which worked for a few years and then the HDMI inputs started crapping the bed where it would take several minutes for a signal to come through once I turned it on.

I replaced it with a Denon and so far so good.

I have a lower model Denon that is plugged in but hasn't been used for years. I think I lost the remote.

My Yamaha HTR-4064 has been a rock for however many years that I've been posting in this thread. I just bought a PS4 Pro so it'll be time to start thinking about upgrading the TV and the receiver soon, and I'll probably be looking at Yamaha again.

I have thousands into my AV stuff, and that $60 harmony remote was the best purchase of it all.

Thanks everyone, I've read about the Onkyo issues and was always, "huh,, mines great!" and then it just happened
I'll likely stick with the brand...$300 off the list price is pretty great, and I'm used to the interface and stuff...looks like I'll go with the 696 after all...but not really rushing into yet.

I'll post some pics and my setup soon enough, I just removed some bookshelfs I had mounted as high rears (I know lol...but they looked cool up there) and replaced them with larger floor standing...(big difference having surrounds where they're supposed to be!)

Thanks again!

I recently bought a PS4 Pro and will have to upgrade my AVR and 1080p LED TV to take advantage of the not-quite-4K graphics. This Yamaha AVR popped up on Woot today, refurb, for $260. Critique please? I've done very little research at this point as to what the new hotness is, does this unit have the bells and whistles that I'll want?

I like the price and I'm coming from a Yamaha that I've been happy with.

So downstairs, I have the family room. I have that "ledge" on 2 of the walls. It's where they ran the plumbing for the baseboard heat. It's like 8 inches deep (noice.)

I'm looking for a DIY or some other kind of TV mount for it. I'd like to try to center it, because when they built this house- they put the outlets above the ledge

Any suggestions?

Edit- something like this, yet the outlets are above the ledge.

I'm not seeing why having the outlets above the ledge would be anything other than a benefit. Mount the TV above the ledge and now you have hidden cables? Any universal TV wall mount should work fine.

Can you elaborate further? The ledge is 8 inches deep, so you'd see cables more so than being hidden in my opinion
The mount won't come out that far.
TV is only 2-3 inches thick, and maybe 33-36" tall. The mount is only 1.5 inches thick.
I'd like the TV centered on the wall

Obligatory MS Paint drawing.

These are the 2 mounts I have readily available:

Or are you suggesting I make a mount out of 2x4's and adhere it to the ledge?

Oh, so the outlet is just above the ledge? That kinda sucks. If it were a bit higher then you could mount the TV up there and have the outlet behind the TV.

Yes! Exactly! That's the conundrum.
Think it'd look silly if the TV was mounted onto the ledge somehow?

Found a pic from when I was replacing the popcorn ceiling with sheet rock:

Personally, I'd hope there is enough slack left on the romex to move the outlet up. If not, you can always get high quality splicing to splice it (make sure you are up to code of course).

I'd purchase a wall mount that allows the display to sit forward or even with the ledge. If space allows, you may consider Using that space for in wall LCR channels, but you could also wall mount bookshelves. In walls for the side and or rear surrounds, as well as Atmos for the ceiling. I'd go near field with one good sized sub.

I like Reflex's idea and that would be the easiest, but I would mount the TV a little lower even if that means it is spaced out more from the top part of the wall.

It seems like it would be trivial to use 2x4 or 2x6 and a little plywood to frame up a mount that is flush with the lower portion so you could put it at whatever height you want and use any mount.

It also depends on the TV as some have the VESA holes offset, such as LG OLEDs.

Was thinking of the mount come to the ledge.
The TV area that you drew in black would have to be a 75" or 82" TV then.
The height from ledge to ceiling is 43" and an 82" Samsung is 41.6" tall
75" would be smaller and most likely similar to what you depicted as well.
