Default Bad 5th Gear Synchro

Alright, just looking for some opinions here as I'm anxiously waiting for a call back from SOA.

Car is a 2016 WRX with 55k miles, is heavily modified (not quite FBO) and the only mods to the tranny are a shift stop, a stiffer bushing, and the STI transmission mount.

A few weeks ago I noticed that if I didn't rev match really precisely that I would get some grinding going into 5th gear. I dropped the car off last Monday for them to diagnose the problem. They came back and said it was something internal to the transmission and that they don't rebuild or repair them, they straight away will replace it.

That would be great considering it should be covered under warranty, but with all the mods (I was upfront and honest about them all) the dealership said they wouldn't cover it and that I should take it up with SOA.

Fast forward to today--I just received a message from SOA that they need a teardown of the transmission to determine the cause of failure and whether they would cover it.

My question is this--if they tear it down and discover it is something not covered under warranty, what are my options? Who pays to put it back together? Who pays if it's put back together and has more issues? Is it even worth it to let them tear it apart or am I guaranteed to not have it covered by SOA because of the mods?

If anyone has had issues like this in the past I'd love to hear how it turned out for you. My argument for them to cover is that I understand I have pushed the car past it's recommended power threshold, but this is my 5th gear synchro, not 2nd or 3rd that take way more of a beating than 5th--I always downshift if I need any sort of torque in 5th or 6th and never beat on that gear.

There is no perfect answer so here is the general answer:

Your dealer will tell you that the removal of the trans fee is $XXX. You pay this.

Trans is out, dealer/SOA look it over.

If warranty repair, they will pay 100% of everything and refund your trans fee of $XXX.

If they deny the warranty, you have options:

1. Put trans in trunk and tow it away.
2. See how much a repair/replacement is.
3. Put the trans back in the car for trans fee of $XXX again and drive it home.

If it was me, I'd just drain the whole thing and fill it up with Redline Lightweight Shockproof. I bet you $7 that your 5th gear grind will go away and you will think I'm some kind of wizard.

2014 WRX 5 speed with 1 thru 4 PPG Straight cut gears, built motor putting 406 to the wheels. Anyway, my 4th synchros are shot from aggressive down shifting to get back in the power band. Im assuming your situation is the same. Of course SOA will find a way out since you modified it. A tear down and rebuild of my 5 speed cost around 7k with the PPG gears, but i also shredded 3rd gear. It also is supposed to handle up to 700 crank hp, guess I'm a little to hard on it. IMO if you have a back up ride save the money from the inspection and beef up the tranny cause you're gonna need it down the road if you're trying to get real power. If not, hope you got room on the credit cards for a synchro job.

This is my thought too. Put some known better fluid in there.

When I got my 09 Spec B (22,000 miles) used in Mar 2011, it would grind sometimes going into 6th at high power. After putting Motul Gear 300 in, that issue went away.

Well after much to-do and a lot of complication, they ruled that it wasn't covered under warranty (shocker) but they did help out in a big way out of good will. The transmission is now fixed but they gave it back to me with it underboosting by about 5 lbs. Back in the shop for them to diagnose per their request. I'm thinking they knocked the charge pipe and caused a leak at the turbo, but it could be just about anything.

Anyone want to venture a guess? What could cause a boost leak after a transmission rebuild?

Update 10/13: The dealership took the car back and was able to find a leak on the charge pipe near the intercooler as well as fixed an exhaust leak they caused when the dropped the exhaust. Car has been solid since and hitting its boost targets.
