JDM Forester transmission
Sorry for the long winded post and I apologize if this isn’t the right section to post this.
How’s it going y’all? Looks like I’ll need to be looking into either fixing or replacing my ‘04 Forester XT trans soon. Took it in for a gear oil change and found a rather large chunk of metal on the magnetic plug. My mechanic seems to think it’s a destroyed shifter bearing washer (pardon my more than likely improper terminology). Doesn’t seem to affect driving at all, other than explaining why it feels like it has a short shifter when it doesn’t (feels like it takes more force to shift than it should with stock shifter). Seems like not a huge deal now but I would rather take care of this issue sooner than later and avoid thrashing this trans further. Little info on the Foz. 2004 Forester XT with about 75k miles. Vf48 turbo, full exhaust mods, STI intercooler, 1000cc injectors/fuel rails, walboro 255( I believe ), fortune auto 500’s, and I think that’s about it. Pro tuned on Access Port. I did not do these mods myself, the car came this way when I bought it. Seems to me that I have about 4 options for a remedy. 1. Buy a used trans. I have found a JDM Forester XT trans online and it’s very reasonably priced. The trans code is TY55VB3AA. Seems like it’s the same gearing and all but I’m not sure if it is a push or pull system. I am also unsure if there is any difference with axles/hubs, although I think there shouldn’t be an issue. My biggest worry is that it might have some issues if its own and essentially wasting money. Assuming there’s no practical differences between it and my factory trans, it should be fairly cheap to swap in. 2. Have my mechanic pull and service my current trans. I suspect this route would be a bit more money than option 1. My biggest fear with this route is that I’ll pay about $1700 in labor and find that there is more wrong than the $5 washer, quickly raising the cost of repair. 3. Go full STI drivetrain swap. I have found a full STI drivetrain, minus drive shaft, for about $3900. Although this seems appealing, I still worry about the integrity of the parts and suspect I would need to buy a new clutch due to my Forester being around 300whp. This seems to be the most expensive route and I can handle the expense but really am trying to do this as cheaply and practically as possible. 4. Bite the bullet and buy a brand new trans from Subaru. There’s a dealership not far from me that offers one about 15% less than msrp. To me, this would alleviate all worries of longevity but also be the second most expensive route. Key questions I would love answered. 1. Which option would you choose? I’m leaning towards either option 1 or 4. ( I don’t plan on doing any additional power mods ). 2. Is there anything info I’m unaware of in regards to the TY55VB3AA transmission? Will it be a direct bolt on, if not, what all else would I need? 3. Am being overly cautious about buying used trans and drivetrain parts? I tend to have terrible luck and want to make the best choice for the long run. 4. Any reason to go for or avoid rebuilding the current trans? What could I possibly suspect to see other than the part my mechanic seems to think has failed? Thanks a bunch and again my apologies for the essay lol.
