Default Notorious Subaru “Whine” on Acceleration

Hey guys and gals, I am posting in regards to my 2009 WRX. On acceleration I have noticed a weird whining noise that is prominent under acceleration or bearing a load. Any idea what it is? Is it normal? (Stock) brand new short block rebuild and clutch 9k ago. I tore my console out to show the noise better! Thanks to anyone who helps.

Did you happen to replace/upgrade your transmounts while you were under there?

Did you ever figure this out? I have the exact same noise on my 04 WRX.

What do you think is wrong. That noise is transmission whine, nothing else.

Welcome to the world of the famous subaru 1940's truck transmission. I've had a couple 5mt's in my Legacy GT wagon, (294,000 miles) they make the same gear whine. Us Legacy GT's guys have learned to live with it.

If you think this noise is annoying, don't get aftermarket transmission mounts, like the ones from Perrin. It'll sound even more like a racecar's straight cut gearbox.

I personally love that sound.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has learned to enjoy that sound.

Default Is this it?

I was worried about the noise. I do have the transmission mount and thought it was abnormal at first but I guess it’s what you guys are also referring to.

That sounds like a trans with straight cut gears. Much louder than the Subaru whine on a stock trans and an aftermarket mount.

I had basically the same whine in my 05 LGT and was always skeptical but just went with it. I always noticed it more if I was using an aux cord too. The whine would almost sound like it would be amplified through the radio.

:/ and if it’s not? I have stock transmission. What could that noise be? On the drive home I was only able to replicate that noise once. Of course I wasn’t pushing the car as hard. Sounded just fine the rest of the way and the shifting is smooth. Could it be damage to the transmission or diffs? No check engine light either.

Do a recording from inside the car like the OP did and then you/we will have a direct comparison with the noise.

OP's is just standard gear whine.
Since you've been racing your car to some extent, for all we know you have been beating on your transmission and may have done some type of internal damage.

Point is, we don't know without more information so everything is just conjecture.

So I finally figured it out. It was the power steering over heating

The only other thing that can make a whine like that, on an otherwise standard car, is the steering pump.

Edit: just saw your update...

The transmission gear mesh sound tends to be louder in a vehicle with mounts bolted further back like in our vehicles. We have three that transmit sound directly to the cabin. The front upper "dogbone" mount, the front transmission mount, and the rear. Some noise also makes it through the shift linkage and the mount that connects the shifter to the tunnel. When the mounts get old, they get more brittle but also stiffer which transmits more high frequency noise like gear whine. Stiffer group n mounts and aftermarket polyurethane harder mounts also amplify the noise. It's always there, just depends on how much you are transmitting to the cabin. It's not a Subaru exclusive thing. Also, fwd transverse engine vehicles tend to have less because it has to travel through more bushings before getting to the cabin.
