Default Anybody installed an MSD 8239 Ignition coil on their Subie?

96 Legacy with a 2.2. I'd like to know which wires go where. Its a 3 wire input plug. Msd says the center is +12 and the outer are -12 triggers. Other than that I would just be guessing. Thanks for any input.

Yeah you're right.

subie connector, read right to left 1, 2, 3.
pin 1 is for cyl numbers 1 and 2

pin 2 is "12v signal in"

pin 3 is for cyl numbers 3 and 4

The MSD connector reads left to right tho, opposite to the subie one.
I think the wires colors are the same as mine. Here's a pic over on sl-i.net

I thought I got it right the first time, but first start up on my car it backfired! So try the wiring thats in the pic. If it's not right switch around the 2 outer wires, then it should work. The center wire on the subie connector always goes the center wire on the msd connector.

Thanks! How did you mount yours, did you just use 2 of the mounting holes? Did you need to use different coil boots or did the factory ones work. Last question, how was the pizza?

HAha! sadly that was someone else's picture, I think I'm going to make some pizza now tho...

Anyways, you need some extended bolts, they are M6 x 2" bolts. You'll only need 2, because the msd coil is taller and a little longer than the subaru coil so only 2 bolts line up.

Here's the thread from sl-i.net I used to make sure I had everything I needed:

I just did the conversion and clipped off my old harness and tied directly into the stock harness wires. When doing it with the 8239 the wires are as follows:

Subaru > MSD Harness

Yellow - Green
Black - Black
Red - Blue

And that keeps the plug on the same side but the MSD logo will be on the back side. The bolt size you need is M6 x 45mm or 50mm and you only need 2. Since mine is a DOHC I went with the wires for a 98 Legacy and you don't need to mod them.

Its the flat pin connector from a 96-00 Dodge Neon. You can find one at a junk yard or from Napa.

Yes there was a noticeable smoothness in the idle and I got a little better gas mileage. I'm sure on a dyno it would show the gain and probably show a smoother graph. Its a higher voltage which means stronger spark which equates to better fuel burn. Its like going from a regular distributor with separate coil to HEI ignition.

I have a voltage regulator/grounding kit on my car already. I think I felt that type of gain after installing the grounding kit. Felt like there was a "wall" from 4500-redline before the install. Then it felt like there wasn't I e after the install. I also saw a small mpg increase.

Would the MSD add to what I've already felt?

Yes it will because its 8k more volts to the plugs which means better fuel burn.

Default Plugs?

So I have a ej22e single port with 8239 msd. i've tried swapping the outer wires for the splice, i've used phase II plug wires with stock ngks plugs (bk9re or w/e). It misfires either way. Did you regap or replace your plugs?

I tried retrofitting the Accel Neon coil to my Phase II EJ22. It burned my ignition coil fuse under the dash so I ended up keeping the stock coil. I ordered plugs and wires from hhttp://www.weaponxperformance.com/

The car is louder and smoother as confirmed by my peers. Here's a pic of the wires.

I just picked up a neon coil and connector from a junkyard. Made sure to get a flat pin connector, coil looked fairly new. Installation was easy on my 98 obs ej22e. Plug wires already matched coil fine.
Soldered wires
Sub yellow - neon black
Sub blue - neon blue
Sub red - neon green

I only have 1 bolt holding it on the manifold, 22e intake mounts must be diff than some others. Fired right up. Idle is slightly smoother, biggest difference I noticed is it eliminated the stumble/hesitation from a start accelerating. Will keep an eye on the gas mileage next couple weeks. Will be getting an MSD coil in the future, but for $25 it works good.

Old thread but this is wired incorrectly.

one connector and its wires needs to be flipped. Here is a picture

Is this MSD ignition mod worth trying? I have a supercharged ej253 which is misfiring only under high boost and high rpm. NGK 48650 is plug and play and may be worth a try. Also 8.5mm wires are available...

I noticed no difference. The factory Diamond coil might actually be better. Spend it on NGK plugs and have fresh wires.

I’ve tried plugs. Iridium and copper with very tight gap, which of course is detrimental to HP if it’s not required for avoiding misfires.

Going to try 8.5mm wires when I can locate the right ones. (Magnecor). I have 2 stock coils and they both misfire at high rpm and high load only on cyl 1 which seems very odd. I’m not entirely convinced it’s a spark issue.

No idea about the Ngk coil pack but generally ngk products are good.
