Registering a car in VA, locality question
I currently live in Arlington, VA and my car is registered there, but I keep it in Page County, VA (Shenandoah Valley). I just drive it on weekends, when I go back home. I was wondering if I can register the car in Page County or if it has to stay registered in Arlington. I would want to do this because personal property taxes are lower there AND because there are no emissions tests for when I put on a TBE. Thanks.

There is a place on a form (not sure which one) that says, where is the car located most of the time. But not sure, I would say call.

I see no problem registering in Page County, assuming you have an address to register it to. Also, your drivers licence might need to reflect that address, so you might have to be careful there.

Registration in page county will have no emissions testing and lower insurance rates

The vehicle must be registered in the county that the registered owner lives in. Hence the reason for the tax sticker. They tax the owner by where they live. The taxes you pay go directly to the county/city that you live in, not to the state. That is why the taxes are different all over the place.
If you live in Arlington and pay Page county taxes, you would be doing every other tax paying citizen in this great commonwealth an injustice. You would basically be avoiding the taxes that are required by the government where you ACTUALLY live, and instead be paying taxes into someone elses pocket. I pay for the taxes in the county where I live. And guess what, they money I pay goes towards the schools, libraries, 911 system, etc. that me or my family would utilize. I may not agree with the amounts that I have to pay, but at least I follow the law. Besides, there are ways around paying car taxes. Go volunteer at your local fire department or rescue squad. If you are an active member of a volunteer station, your car tax will be ZERO and you will get a free tax decal every year. |

Dude, chill. I was just asking what the law was. I pay my Arlington taxes. I was asking because my car has only been in Arlington for the first week after I owned it. I mean, if I owned a house in Page County I would pay personal property tax for that house to Page County, not to Arlington, right? If the car has to be registered here and I have to pay taxes on it for roads that it will never touch then so be it. My truck and bike actually stay up here and I pay Arlington taxes on them too. I would volunteer with the fire dept, but as you can see they probably make more money off my vehicle taxes than what little time I could give would be worth. Thanks for the info though.
I already get the break on insurance because my company bills based on where the car is garaged, not where it is registered. |

Just got off the phone with Arlington County Commisioner of Revenue's office, and this is WRONG! You pay taxes based on where the vehicle is garaged, NOT on where you live. There is a special box on the VA DMV registration below the owner's address to mark to say where the vehicle is garaged. I'm about to save a ton of money on my personal property taxes |
