An argument to AWD all the things here. (Plus winter tires.)

Is that the highest they go there or do they require chains?

For us it’s:
Nothing
Carry chains or traction tires
Chains or traction tires required (4wd irrelevant)
Chains required (I think they do two stages - one for 2wd then one for all vehicles)

There is a chains required level but I hear that’s never an issue. If that bad they just close the freeway.

I have Auto Socks in the trunk to be compliant anyway.

So if you have AWD and R comps you're good?

As long as those two grooves are at least 2/32” looks like one would be legal. And going absolutely nowhere.

Uncharacteristically brief thoughts of the night:

1) Lincoln’s pricing for the Aviator PHEV is simply insane.

2) Somehow the Kia Telluride seems very attractive. 3” or so more 3rd legroom than the cramped Land Cruiser. I should test drive one once they actually get in stock.

The 3 row SUV market is depressing. The X doesn’t speak to me, yes, but the Ascent and its ilk really don’t. Their 3rd rows are also way less useful than those of a minivan, even if they are better than that of the Land Cruiser. Access is also worse, mildly tempered by fancy tilt-with-car-seat tricks.

So I have emerged from that thankfully none too deep rabbit hole and instead will order some AutoSocks for the (FWD) PacHy’s Nokians for next ski season. I suppose if I would drive an AWD Sienna that’d solve it, too, but y tho?

(Recall that I got away with the 2 row Volvo then Tesla for this ski season since the wife was first pregnant then staying at home with Thing 3. The whole brood will be traveling come next winter—ski resort of choice has child care starting at 6 months and the wife wants to ski with me once more.)

I’m semi-suffering when we go to the mountains with all 3 but the 4runner works over the minivan (Odyssey). It’s hard for the kids to go back to being able to touch each other and not having a DVD player once they have it.

If I was doing trips like this all the time or longer duration I’d be looking for a 3rd row - LC, suburban, expedition but I would give up a lot of nice things about the size and maneuverability of the 4runner when I’m in the city.

There are rumors of AWD for the Pacifica, too. But you'd have to do at least one year with the FWD, then upgrade to 2021 model (at the earliest).

One advantage of the flat midwest...there's nothing snow tires and FWD can't handle.

There’s no 3rd row, right? So 3 across? With the infant carrier that’s tough to pull off in normal width vehicles, not to mention my current seats for the older girls are very wide. This is fixable but might as well take the minivan.

Default Vehicle suggestions for shikataganai (CN: Bought a ****in' Pacifica)

I asked the eldest kid whether she liked my Land Cruiser more than the Tesla.

Her reply was that she likes zoom zoom in the Tesla 10% more than she liked sitting up high and off roading in the Land Cruiser.

The size of child seats these days is simply insane. I don't think I rode in my booster seat past the age of 4.

On the flip side our 4 year old was cleared for a hbb when she went for her 4 year checkup. She was thrilled. Those stupid seats are massive.

We are 8,7, and 4 so just boosters for two of them.

There are narrower seats that will fit (like Diono) but I’m sure for shik reasons those aren’t ok. Worked for 3 wide in an Outback for my wife before she caved to minivan-dom.

If we were shooting for 3 across then we'd do Dionos belt-mounted. That'd mean a roof rack for the 3, though, if the passenger footwell isn't a storage space for my ski bag.

Not the end of the world and I've certainly wasted money on other, larger things, but I am not psyched with trying to wedge two older kids on either side of the infant carrier.

This thread has thus become a car seat daddy blog.

The March 14 Y unveil will make for more interesting (maybe?) discussion.

If by "interesting discussion" you mean stream of consciousness that waffles and vacillates all over the place, then yes, it will be interesting.

It doesn't help the 3 kid seat problem as it likely won't be any wider.

This is true. With reportedly so much part sharing it can’t be that different in its hard points.

Fair enough. I can already predict much of said stream of consciousness:

- I may or may not give Tesla a loan for a reservation but I’m very likely to end up with a Y Performance when they actually materialize, even if it is a 3-sized-footprint hatch with 2 rows as is likely
- if I trade to a 3 Performance the biggest obstacle is summer tire timing in relation to the extended ski season and interest rate hedges/rate locks, which even I admit is super boring

Part of the stream of inanity recently is because I find myself with blocks of time when kid 3 is sleeping on me during the day. I can either nap myself or play on my phone with one free hand, and I’ve run the tap of auto news articles thoroughly dry by now.

Tesla's announcement of an imminent price hike/partial walking back of their recent price cuts: https://www.tesla.com/blog/update-te...ricing?utm_cam

Quote:
As a result of keeping significantly more stores open, Tesla will need to raise vehicle prices by about 3% on average worldwide. In other words, we will only close about half as many stores, but the cost savings are therefore only about half.

Potential Tesla owners will have a week to place their order before prices rise, so current prices are valid until March 18th. There will be no price increase to the $35,000 Model 3. The price increases will only apply to the more expensive variants of Model 3, as well as Model S and X.
Although this could well backfire on me if they drop prices again later in the year in yet another capricious move, this invites the question of whether I should move quicker than planned on my 3 LR AWD -> 3 Performance idea. Note bolded section in the quote block--time would be of the essence.

Relevant factoids:

- DCU is still offering 3.99%, which is equal to my current rate
- I apparently can get a Tesla trade-in appraisal online at any time and have time later this week to get CarMax's appraisal, too
- if any available could potentially angle for an ex-demo vehicle for an additional discount
- don't have enough going on in my life at the moment, apparently
- I can work around summer tires given the limited skiing I still have planned for the season

Step 1 should be to get that online Tesla appraisal rolling and scheduling a time at CarMax. If both of those super low then this can all be aborted.
