And?

Again, if they want a truck have at it. You don't see people arguing against a Miata because it can't make a dump run. Why are EV's treated any differently? It's a great option for an A-B car that covers most peoples normal driving needs. If you are a lonely jackass that needs to haul a boat then obviously an EV makes no sense. OTOH There is certainly no possible chance that your wife etc... won't have their own car that can be used to make HD runs etc...

I have a Model S and we are in the list for a Model 3 for the wife. The superchargers make owning a Tesla EV in the north east very doable. I have never waited for charging since I've owned the car. From what I hear, not so much in Cali.

I find our RAV4 EV much easier for the rear facing seats. In the LEAF the kids fit once inside but the cut of the roofline and door frame made it more acrobatic for us to get them in. The high window sills back there also made it so that kids could see the sky but not much else.

Who knew, those people who liked CUVs for their practicality were on to something…

yeah, having two small children, back seat space is a big deal for me now. Hence my wife's Outback and my X5. However, the smaller child is only a few months from going from the infant rear-facing to a convertible, which usually allows for a little more space, even though they are taller. So I'm not ready to switch to anything until I've verified the seat(s) will fit. I'm thinking the Ioniq may be big enough. Who knows. Model 3 should certainly be big enough, but that's forever away.

Going electric intrigues me. While getting 45ish on my commute to and from work, I would love to be without the maintenance hassles.

I have a severe case of range anxiety however. I am commuting 70-80 miles a day in 110+ heat with NO charging stations at my work. Is this even feasible for any car besides a Tesla???

Tesla for sure, or a plug-in hybrid. Could be done in a Leaf... But you'd be running on fumes coasting in limp mode with everything (radio/AC) off by the time you get there? You'd also need all day to charge both at work and at home.

Or a Bolt. maybe the Hyundai but that's unlikely since its range is supposed to be 155 miles or so.

But yeah a plug-in hybrid is more his best bet if he wanted something now before the Model 3 came out.

I'm on the list for a Tesla 3, but I'm thinking the new Prius Prime might be better for me. My commute is around 22 miles total, and the Prime's pure electric range is supposed to be around 30. I can charge at work for free, but can't charge at home at all because condo, so the freedom of having the hybrid not forcing me to tether to a charger all the time has a lot of appeal. I'm trying to figure out a way to broker my spot in the Tesla 3 line for the $7500 tax credit.

No, it's not 2011 all over again. And no, you're not looking at a Fisker Karma.

This is the 2017 Karma Revero. The extended-range electric sedan was formerly unveiled on Thursday at an event near Los Angeles, California.

The Revero, which is priced from $130,000, is a new and improved version of the Fisker Karma and is being sold by a company born out of the remains of Fisker. The new company is called Karma and is backed by Chinese automotive supplier Wanxiang.

The starting price is almost $30k more than the original starting price of the Fisker Karma. However, the car comes fully loaded (the only options are wheel patterns, paint finishes and interior trim) and there are numerous changes to justify the premium.

For starters, Karma is building the Revero in a new factory in Moreno Valley, California, whereas Fisker outsourced production to Finland's Valmet. From what we can tell from our initial experience with the car, build quality is up.

But it's what you can't see that's most impressive. The range-extender remains a 2.0-liter inline-4 sourced from General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] but now benefits from improved cooling. It has a peak power rating of 235 horsepower and is used solely to charge the battery. Two electric motors that actually drive the vehicle provide 403 hp, sending this to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission and limited-slip differential.

The battery is still a lithium-ion unit from A123 Systems, also backed by Wanxiang, but the internal structure has been redesigned and the capacity increased to 21.4 kilowatt-hours, up from 20.4 kwh. According to Karma, the Revero should be able to cover 50 miles before the range-extender needs to kick in.

A more powerful solar panel roof is fitted to the car. Whereas on the FIsker Karma the system only powered ancillary features, on the Revero it can charge the battery. It adds around 1.5 miles per day, depending on weather conditions, thus keeping Karma's promise that it "powers the vehicle."

Much of the electrical hardware has also been improved. According to Green Car Reports, one of the biggest challenges was developing an entirely new wiring harness, as the old one was modified and fixed so many times that it resembled a boa constrictor. This included the addition of 40-kw DC fast-charging capability, and the onboard charger has also been upgraded from 3.3 to 6.6 kw. According to Karma, fast-charging now provides 80 percent charge in 24 minutes.

There have also been structural changes to ensure the car meets the latest safety standards. Unfortunately the curb weight is still a substantial 5,400 pounds, though it's still brisk. The 0-60 mph time is a claimed 5.4 seconds in Sport mode. Top speed is a governed 125 mph. EPA-rated fuel economy will be announced closer to the start of delivery late this year or early next.

Finally, the much maligned infotainment system of the Fisker Karma has been completely overhauled in the Revero. It's said to be quick and now capable of over-the-air updates as well as Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. There is also a digital instrument cluster that uses the same Rightware Kanzi user interface software as Audi. The centerpiece of the fully configurable system is a digital speedometer with integrated infotainment and map content.

Karma plans more models beyond the Revero though remains quiet on what exactly is in the pipeline. However, we know Karma's parent company Wanxiang has applied for production approval for a new plant in China that could build the Revero and the smaller Atlantic sedan unveiled by Fisker in 2012.

I turned in my Leaf in June and now I'm in the market to replace my truck with something electric or range extended (i3, volt).

Went to drive a 2017 volt the other day. Pretty nice. Like that it has apple carplay.
Dealer quoted me stupid numbers for a lease, they were keeping the $7500 for themselves . Once I got the finance guy to admit it i walked out.
Stupid GM.

Yup, cap cost should be at least $7.5k under the sticker price. For my LEAF lease I think cap cost was invoice -$1k - $7.5k.

Well yes, if you're leasing THEY get the $7500 credit. Why would you get tax credit for buying something that you're not buying?

Yeah, it's not like they were hiding anything from you. Credit goes to the registered owner.

It's routinely passed through to the lessee, as was my experience. See post above yours.

I leased a mercedes b-class a year and a half ago and couldn't be happier. They build a mercedes and then put a battery to power it, unlike the i3 that was designed to maximize range (and starts rattling like a subaru ~1yr into ownership). Couldn't be happier with my ~60 miles per day round trip commute. I have made a home-LAX-work run a couple times lately and had 95 miles (with single digit remaining) both times. There's chargers all over near me, so I find an errand to run while car is plugged in to a L2 and spend a couple hours walking around.

My lease was 32K price based 36mo 15k miles/year with 51% residual and 0.5% interest rate (money factor 0.00025ish). It's a compliance car in california - I walked into the dealership and I explained what I wanted, the salesman said 'What do you want the purchase price to be?' Said '$32K' and he held out his hand with an 'OK.' Signed papers the next day. Got the $2500 back from Ca in three weeks.

I traded some text messages with the local Hyundai dealership, inquiring about when they expect to get the Ioniq EV in stock. They haven't been given any allocation info from Hyundai USA yet, so it's mostly undetermined, but they're expecting end of November into December.

Very interested in a Tesla Model 3, but I know there's going to be trouble with the early versions and I'd like to own a house to install the charger into. Anyone have experience moving one of those around, like in a rental property?

A used leaf is so tempting, only problem is we are on the list for a Tesla 3, and I thought we would be trading in our Honda, but now the wife wants to keep it" just in case". I'm like in case what woman. Either way a 2014 Leaf with 10k miles for only $11,000 that's crazy cheap.

I own my charger and moved it from my old house to new one last year. I called an electrician and had them remove and install. Cost me around $150. Rental? Who knows. If you have a cluefull owner they would likely be fine with it assuming you use a licenses electrician. YMMV.

Suggestion: Don't get a hard wired charging station. If the home is relatively modern and has available capacity, have an electrician dump an outlet on the wall with 30a available. This will let you pick up a charger that can mount on the wall but simple be plugged in and then unmounted/unplugged when you're ready to move.

Well, it's a federal rebate for me to drive an efficient vehicle. Doesn't matter that I don't 'own' it. Finance company gets the rebate and passes the savings on to me. Or I don't lease one.

Yeah, I guess it wasn't clear what you were complaining about. But the price you lease the vehicle for should include that tax rebate, yes. You made it sound like they were not going to actually give you the $7,500 straight up, which is different.

Anywho. I noticed one of the local Ford dealerships here has a few of the Focus Electrics. I wonder if they're worth checking out.

That is correct. They were not giving me any of the $7500 federal rebate.

The first quote included some $3600 off MSRP from GM and the dealer. No mention of the federal rebate. When I questioned this they came back with less from GM and dealer and $7200 reduction they would not explain. Then 'finance guy' then came over and I asked him some direct questions. He squirmed a little, half admitted they DO keep the $7500 but did not offer it off the price. I then left.
