Default Recommended shops for trans rebuild

Hey Guys,

Well I think it is time to have my trans looked at and possibly rebuilt. Clutch is chattering like mad and the deceleration noise (which varies as the dccd is adjusted) is just getting worst. To top it off, I think I see golden specks in the oil so the syncros my need a swappin'.

So I'm eyeing up Rocket right now to do the work, but before I commit; are there any other recommendations for shops that can potentially do a proper rebuild on a 6mt?

I would appreciated some feedback, but only respond if you've had a the work done before. I know there are a lot of recommended shops with great service. I want to make sure the workmanship is there too.

Thanks guys!

depending on how much it is going to cost you, it might be cheaper to get a replacement like the one in the classifieds currently... I think the seller is agent7 or something...

I only know of one shop local to me that does transmissions, but I don't think they're particularly specialized in Subarus... I think as far as Subarus goes, RR might be a good option.

However... You might try contacting 5zigen. I know he has a shop out in Richmond, so he may know someone in the business that specializes in that.

Or, you could rebuild it yourself...

In any event, good luck with it. It's something I hope to never have to deal with.

I would love to rebuild it myself, but I can't have the car down for too long. It'll take me a lot longer to rebuild it as I don't have easy access to press or the proper measurement instruments. hehe, Motor rebuild I would take on any day if I can a spare one.

I was thinking of going the route of doing a swap, but I think it would just start the viscous cycle over again. My trans is sitting at 140K and the one from Agent is sitting @ ~90K with an unknown life span. bit of a risk @ $2500. I want to have a trans inspected and built to last hopefully another 150 - 200K (fingers crossed).

Thanks for all the input so far. Please keep em coming if you have any other recommendations.

This guy used their "same day service" a few years back.

They're pretty good at transmission work, not just engines.

In your case I don't think a same day service would do you any good if they can't determine if the center diff is still good or not beforehand. If it is bad, they'll obviously have to order one in or possibly swap one out from another transmission they have.

Give Dominic a call on Tuesday and see what he can do for you. Let him know Arthur sent you and he'll hook you up!

Edit: Also I would keep the dccd at full open in manual mode so more damage isn't done. Doesn't have to be the center diff, could be just bad bearings/thrust bearings in the transmission. Won't know until you open it up. If extra cash is on hand you could change the gearing as well to the 07+ sti gearing with longer 3rd and 4th gears.

Thanks for the info Alcoolaid,

Didn't know about hese guys and will contact them to see what options they have to offer. Looks like they know what they are doing and they are not too far away.

I'm assuming you have had work done with them. How did you work it with the border crossings? Do you only pay duty on replacement parts or the labour as well?

I've been doing what you suggested, been running in open mode to "prolong" the dccd as long as possible.
