I dont even want to look.

I know it's over 20% though.

Question is... should I lower my 401k contributions or consider this a good time to put in a little more? (I'm not hurting for cash and live frugally and have no debt...)

Safer to shut the site down and let them wonder, rather than receive angry, pleading phone calls.

In that case, up your contribution. Even though you're already getting more for your same contribution amount due to the downturned market, you should do even more if you can since the buys are so good. Almost everything's "on sale".

How much money do you actually have invested in the market, a 401k, etc?

I transferred it all to bonds a couple weeks ago, or it would be much uglier

It was a curious question. I considered not posting the amount, but what the hell do I care. I'm not one of those "That's personal! " people.

Yeah wasnt sure if you had the "i dont have money in the market, so **** it" attitude or the more common "i have tons of money and have deluded my self into thinking now is the best time to continue buying stuff so i can stop the bleeding in the markets single handedly".

For someone who is so on top of the daily activities of the market im surprised you havent shifted to a safer position and waited for the bottom/uptick before jumping all in again.

-21.51%

20% of that occurred since 9/30/2008. Ugh.

Just curious, but has anyone cut back on their contributions in light of the recent unpleasantness?

So If I currently contribute above and beyond what my employee matches, should I back it down to what they match for a while?

I'm not good with money stuff. Good at spending, but that's about it.

That's where I was before (max employee match), but then I took out of our stock purchase program and put that post-tax deduction into more pre-tax 401(k) contribution...

Not sure if it was the right idea. I'm over the match now but I dunno, unless it drops a lot more now, and stays down forever, I think that putting more into long term 401(k), even if it is aggressively managed (I'm only 28, got a while to retirement), I'll be able to get in on some deals now that'll last me for a while.

Am I stupid?

You realize that's a rolling year not year to date (YTD) right? Not the same thing.

My suggestion, max it out so you get the tax bennies (my reasoning). If you cant max it out, do as much as you can. If it brings you down a tax bracket you will be rather happy when it comes tax time.

Shifting to a safer position now would entail taking huge losses. I'm 24 and can wait this out. I also wouldn't be buying to stop the bleeding. I'd be buying because the deals are so good.
