Does anyone invest in long and short term bonds? I've never put money into them but they are the only thing showing a positive return. All the small to large cap stocks and multi assets are down.

+25.7% YTD.

This rally is bogus though. We're in for a roller coaster once the market accepts the fact that the recovery will be slow and painful.

Most of the earnings good news is coming from cost cutting, not real revenue.

I'm only $300 dollars away from being at my original IRA opening balance.
I was down $600.
My 401K is doing better since I made some safer allocations.

20% now. Haven't decided what I'll do about moving some of it out of stocks and into something more conservative. Supposedly this is going to be a double bottom recession.

My workplace was quite odd -- they wouldn't let me put into my 401k until I was 21. I hit 21 in February after the market had already mostly tanked. I'm up 31% this year. Woo!

My wife lost a bunch but has it all back and them by now. We're lookin good!

The ****ty thing, my work isn't contributing this year.

Only 30.08% for the year for me.

The good news is I almost have as much money as I did 2 years ago. (I'm trying to ignore the fact that the 11% of my paycheck I put in each month is still "missing" from the last 2 years... )

Jan 09 to Present - +43.4%

But I'm still down 17% from my max in 10/2007.

Well, I'm above where I was in 2007 at this point. Granted I've contributed 10% of my income over that time, but as of 12/31/2009 the 1 year rate of return was 44.93%.

The market upturn has definitely put back a lot of dough. I've almost doubled the money in the account since the beginning of the year, though a third of that uptick is my contributions.

I'm in the same boat. A few weeks ago I finally passed my high point from August of 2007. I was when I thought about it... 2 years and 5 months of putting 11% of my paycheck into the account....and I finally have what I used to have. At least it's still going up....for now.

2008: -45.00%

2009: +36.65%

My percentage loss was pretty big in 2008 but that was my first year of serious contributions so I actually ended up with more money in Dec 08 than I had in Jan 08.

36% return sounds great, until you see that it's a 36% return on a greatly reduced value.

After a 45% loss, you'd have to have a 180+% return on what you had left to equal what you started with. Tell your banana he can stop dancing.
