Default Home audio/video wiring gurus, need a bit of help.

I just purchased a surround sound system and I need a little bit of help getting it all put together correctly so here goes.

TV - Sony SXRD 2006 model KDS- R60XBR1

Surround sound- Onkyo 7.1 1000w HT-S790(S)

Dish- Dish network VIP 211 hdtv receiver

plus a PS3

and a XBox 360

I am trying to hook everything up so I can either use the TV speakers with out the surround sound on each individual system, or the TV speakers and the surround sound on each system. But I suck at home electronics and this is the first time I have hooked up a surround sound system. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I can supply info on what the back of each system looks like as far as outputs and inputs go if needed.

Thanks for reading.

Sam.

Shouldn't be too hard.

Basically, connect everything to your TV as if you didn't have surround sound at all, including the standard stereo sound cables, that will take care of being able to hear them through the TV.

Then, you'll also need to run sound cables (either digital coax or optical audio, depending on what kind of output each device has) from the cable box, PS3 and 360 directly to the Onkyo receiver.

You can also run audio from the TV to the Onkyo. Though it will only be stereo (simulated to surround if you choose), it will almost certianly sound better than the TV speakers.

Edit: The Onkyo manual probably tells you to route all the video signals though the Onkyo receiver too. IMO, you should ignore that and just hook the video cables up directly to the TV. Run only the audio cables to the receiver, it will work just fine.

Great choice on the Surround Sound System...

<--- has the same one.

Why would you want to use your TV speakers?

For your money it's a great purchase. The receiver had more inputs than most 4-500 dollar receivers. The only negative is the size of the speakers, the system sounds great and for 400 bucks, whats there to complain about.

You must be a BOSE fan.

This is done:
PS3 - HDMI connector from PS3 to the back of the TV. check
360 - HD cables to back of tv check
dish - hd cables to back of tv. check

The 360 and the dish are both up and working fine but the PS3 on the other hand is not.

I have video 1 on the receiver set for optical input 1, which is the 360. Domino in the disk tray, works great both tv/surround

Video 2 on the receiver is set for optical input 2, which is the PS3, talledega nights blueray in the player. sound works on the TV, does not on the surround.

Video 3 on the receiver is set for optical input 3 which is the dish and both tv/surround work.

What am I doing wrong with the PS3?

I would love to figure this out tonight. Can anyone tell me what I might have done wrong with the ps3?

If I spent $3k+ on a TV I'd spend 3k+ on the accompanying sound system, in fact I'd generally prefer to spend more on the sound than the screen. That Onkyo is superior to everything Bose makes, but I wouldn't pair it with that TV.

And if all you are aware of is Bose and various name brand HTIB products, then don't even try furthering this discussion.

ps3 AV Output

Screen size: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
HDMI: HDMI out x 2
Analog: AV MULTI OUT x 1
Digital audio: DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) x 1

Xbox 360

Component output and Digital Coaxial Sound.

So you plug the Component cable from the X360 into the Onkyo and the Out from the Onkyo to the TV in.

The Digital Coaxial in to the Onkyo and the Digital out to the Digital in on the TV.

The HD receiver HDMI to TV. The Digital Optical to Onkyo Digital Optical input 2. (input 1 might be shared with the Digital Coaxial.)

PS3 HDMI to HDMI 2 on TV (6 or 7) it is up to you. Digital Optical out to Onkyo Digital Optical input 3.

That should do it.

You may need to buy the Component Xbox 360 cable.

You also have to plug the Onkyo speakers in but that is easy.

Make sure you tune the sub woofer so that you can't hear where it is but you can feel it without disturbing too many others in your house/neighbourhood.

Trust me, I thought about going all out with the sound system.

I have had the TV for a while without surround sound, so any system is better than what I had before. My cousin has the sister 5.1 Onkyo system (which he can't even turn up all the way in his apartment without neighbors banging on walls and ceilings), and for the money I think the 7.1 I bought is hard to beat.

Don't get me wrong, there are some very nice systems in the "theatre" rooms at various electronic stores. But I bought my whole system for less than I would have paid to buy just one of the speakers out of a set that I looked at.

I might upgrade somewhere farther down the line, but I have bought to much crap lately and I couldn't afford to drop over 3k on a sound system this year.

PS. I am watching "fearless" in 1080i HDDVD right now on the 360 with the speakers pumped...............

Hehe I'm just giving you a hard time anyway! Not everyone puts much emphasis on sound but I giggled at the $3k+ TV with a <$500 surround system

Enjoy it man! My folks just got the non-XBR version of that TV and are in the process of getting quotes for the sound system (with my help).

Dude, You rule. I am going to have to go to buy a few more cables though. Thank you for the time man. I owe you a beer and a steak if you are ever in Central TN.

to place the subwoofer you may want to try by first placing it where you will be seated, then crawl around the room until you can still hear/feel the bass without distortion, and the sub seems to "disappear." Once you find that spot, trade places with the sub.

On the subwoofer you will or should have two dials one is power level and this keeps the sub from shaking your tea cup off the table upstairs/downstairs/nextdoor...

The other is the one for making the subwoofer dissappear, can't remember exactly what it is called and I don't want to go and look. It depends on room size and keeps you from having to crawl around looking for a place to put it, instead you hide it from sight and enjoy.

Remember a Sub is meant to be felt not heard.

Oh I just checked and your Sub doesn't give you the varience option, so maybe you will need to crawl arround a little bit.

I myself Have a 5.1 Jamo setup. The Jamo Sub has a frequency range option as well as a phase which lets you place the sub in different areas and for different room sizes, and power levels. Then again the Sub cost me close to $500 all on its own.

Depending on the sub and room characteristics, that isn't necessarily going to be enough.

You can hear a subwoofer, the higher frequencies that a sub will generally be asked to reproduce are audible, not just something you sense. They are non-directional and hard to locate, but sub placement has a lot to do with the extension, and response in your room.
