03 WRX Wagon
I bought a WRX a few days ago and it was making a metal on metal noise which was solved after replacing the brakes and rotors. But when I replaced them I saw that the front axel on the drivers side needed replacing which I suspected to be the cause of a thunking sound. After replacing the axel, the thunking was still there. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be or how to fix it?

Did you check the wheel bearings?

Tie rods, ball joints, sway bar bushings and end links, are the sway bar mounts tight? Strut top hats?
Those things have all clunked at one point or another on my 02 wagon. Any more description on the type of clunk, or the conditions under which the clunk happens? Last edited by MortonCharbo; 04-25-2021 at 04:58 AM. |

It almost sounds like the brakes are constantly rubbing, so I did describe the noise incorrectly to begin with. There were three different noises that were very similar to begin with. One was fixed by replacing brakes and rotors. And one by replacing the front drivers side axel, but the other is a loss. It’s any time the car is in motion. |

Ball joints and the pinch bolt that holds them can cause a clunking sound. OEM end links are a known weak point even when new. A blown damper will clunk as well. Lower control arm bushings, especially the inner front, can clunk when too worn. Since most people don't do all the regular maintenance, your best bet is to start replacing all that stuff (and more) given the age of the car.

Did you have your rotors turned? I've had brand new rotors that were out of true...
