Default Brainiac Build Thread by Workshop 12

This is a great idea to have a "command center" in your car"
Is brainiac Linux based?

The base operating system is actually a customized version of Android. I say customized since we've taken into account necessary automotive features such as quick boot times, power management for on/off/memory/ignition etc as well as a tailored experience for being embedded into a car.

Part of that tailoring includes integrated audio/video circuitry for on-board processing of fade/balance/equalizer and channel tuning/mixing of various audio & video inputs and outputs.

Android at the base also allows us to bring full Google Maps features for navigation, voice commands as well as utilizing Google Play for software updates to keep your Brainiac unit up to date.

In general a flexible platform for accessories, updates and expansion

Mark the date in your calendar! August 22nd we'll be an exhibitor at ImportFest 2015 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. We'll have Brainiac units, our widebody Bugeye and the BatBerry there on display!

A small update teaser....

This was from a medium quality test print from an early 3D model that we were using to check initial dimensions of the model. There were no mounting points or connectors on the print, just the face of the trim so that we could get an initial feel. The 3D model has gone through many revisions since then.

We'll have an update mid next week with details on the process including some more pictures from the initial test fitting session and also pictures of the revised 3D model.

But for now it's just the teaser pic

We haven't given out pricing for Brainiac yet but it will be competitively priced with other top of the line head units out there with a price range between the 7" and the 10.1" units.

We're working towards a pre-order this fall. As of yet we're still working out some of the build cost details leading up to that pre-order but we'll be announcing prices as soon as we have everything locked in

We've posted up some more updates/photos from our initial test fitting session as well as some more renderings of the updated 3D model of the trim pieces.

All of the feedback from the test fitting has already been incorporated in the model and we are continuing the process of 3D printing to test fit and revise.

Any plans for true 02 Impreza fitment? Or just 02's with updated centers? You where a bit vague as to why you where even offering a 7" screen and I'm hoping its for other applications

You are correct, our 7" option is a standard double-din touch screen installation that should fit all cars. This would be the best option for the 02-04 WRX since the climate controls are rod/cable based for those vehicles.

It will have the exact same features as the 10.1" display, just in a smaller package

More details about the digital air suspension controller will be coming up soon. But for now, here's a work-in-progress picture of the touch controller. Just tap a corner to make adjustments.

We're continuing to update the user interface for the digital air suspension controller. Multiple static and dynamic presets can be set by pinching/zooming your zone to the desired height and saving your settings. Granular control per corner is also available.

You can even configure a preset based on different factors such as speed or GPS location.

Still a work in progress, but it's polishing up nicely!

Almost ready for paint. Prepping 3D prints takes some elbow grease. 80/prime/fill/200/800wet/prime. Nothing like the smell of ABS dust in the air

We have round 2 of the test prints almost ready for some glamour shots. These prints have all of the clips for the dashboard and the housing for holding the 10.1" screen.

Top left is the original ash tray cover that hasn't been painted. The rest have been color matched.

Should have some installed photos soon

Here's a quick teaser shot of test fitting the 10.1" display into a 05-07 WRX/STI dashboard. This is our work-in-progress display stand that still needs a bunch of shaping and painting but it's coming along nicely

This round of plastics fit much better than the ones before. There's still some tweaking to do to get everything perfectly aligned, but we figured we would clean up the plastics and paint them to get a better idea of how everything will look once installed in the car. I'm still waiting for my STI shifter trim to arrive so that we can snap it in for a finished look.

More details of the second round of test fitting will be posted on the blog soon

Thanks Matt! It's really coming along nicely. The 3D printing has been great for us to make revisions as we go. When we find gaps and alignment issues we just feed them back into the model and press print.

Although printing just the top trim piece takes about 20 hours

We recently finished up our test fitting session with revision 2 of our 10.1" Brainiac plastics for the 05-07 WRX/STI.

The fit was so nice we decided to clean up the surfaces and color match them to the Subaru trim for a photo shoot.

There's lots of photos in the blog post and even some teasers of some upcoming button designs
