News 2015+ Subaru Impreza Sedan WRX/STi Perfect Fit Subwoofer Enclosure Prototype Build

2015+ Impreza Sedan WRX/STi Perfect Fit Subwoofer Enclosure Prototype Build - Ideas and Feedback Wanted!!

Some long time members may remember us from before, we offer a variety of fiberglass subwoofer enclosures specifically designed for the 2001 - 2014 Subaru Sedans, Wagons and Hatches. I'll be posting a new For Sale Thread with current models and prices in the Vendor For Sale Section
Please direct any sales related questions there.

Just got this 2019 in the shop to start the build on a new subwoofer enclosure model, looking for some feedback on the overall size/design as well as a little help with verifying the trunk interior panels between the other years.

Trunk Panel Verification

From what I've been told the 2015 - 2020 Impreza Sedans WRX/STi's have the same interior trunk panels, the pic below is a 2019 STi passenger side panel. Looking for other members with the other years & models (2015 - 2020) of the Impreza Sedans to post a similar pic of their passenger trunk interior panel on this thread here or you can email us directly at [email protected] In order for the enclosure to work in other model years the interior panel has to be identical, any help with this verification would be greatly appreciated!

Prototype Build Design/Ideas

Overall the trunk space is less than previous years, especially concerning height. With the interior panel made to accommodate the trunk hinge arm there isn't enough room for a 12 inch model without it sticking out into the cargo space considerably. A 10 inch and possible 8 inch model looks to be the best bet, I usually try to shoot for the largest size when designing any new model. I don't know if there may be some interest in an 8 inch version as well or if the majority would rather just run a 10??

Below are pics of our SI1008 ( 08-2014 Subaru Sedan WRX/STi 10 Inch Perfect Fit Subwoofer Enclosure). Overall design and size would be similar most likely for both a 10 and/or 8 inch version. The slightly elongated mounting baffle allows for a bit easier fiberglass layup during production and gives room on the sides for a grill (pictured). This model fits the driver's side since there was a bit more room for subwoofer depth. The 2019 has identical sides, many customers in the past have requested passenger side models for weight distribution so the proto will be designed to fit the passenger side.

b

Any feedback, ideas, concerns and questions are welcomed and appreciated! More pics to come once it starts taking shape!

Thanks - Todd

What price range are you looking @ Charging? There are 2 other companies doing such a box.. one is wood, the other is Fiberglass. They are ranging from 300 to 400 depending on options.. I decided on just using a cheap wood enclosure that I can remove, as that price point was more cost than your average subwoofer.. rather pay for a non custom box for 200 less and get a better sub or amp.. depending on the price I might like to get some trunk space. Good luck.

I would definitely be interested based on price, I agree with the previous post that the box costing more than the sub seems a bit excessive, but I also understand that fiberglass work is not easy.

Here's a link to a site that can do a 12" enclosure that they say will support a JLW6

https://shop.wickedcas.com/subaru-wr...ic-box---.html

I have a 2019 STI Limited with the HK system if you need any pictures, let me know

I'd like to keep all the 10's the same price as other models, same with the 12's just so there is a standard. Each model has a different cost due the fiberglass work. Unfortunately my cost have just continued to rise drastically since we started in 2005, we haven't adjusted our retail price to compensate for that increase but may have to going forward.

Originally doing this type of custom "one off" subwoofer enclosure build in a vehicle we'd have to charge considerably more for all the time involved. We were able cut that down a ton when we started the enclosure line with molds but the glass work is still very time consuming.

I'm not a huge fan of their overall design or the fact they use the same enclosure volume for a 10 or a 12.

A 12 inch model is doable yes, probably have to limit the size of the sub to entry or shallow mount models though or the enclosure would protrude into the cargo area considerably. The 10 I'm starting with should fit most sub manufactures entry to high end models. Obviously it won't work for ever 10 inch sub ever made but should be able to accommodate the majority of them.

You should have the same passenger side trunk panel then correct?

Not knocking the thread but seems silly now that the next gen wrx/sti will be dropping in the next 8-12 months.
Where were you guys the past 4.5 years I was looking for an enclosure?

Agreed, late with getting a model out that's for sure. Unfortunately life happened, just wasn't in a spot to tackle new models. I'm on the 5th fiberglass company now, each one raising their costs to the point it wasn't worth doing. Wasn't sure if it was going to make sense to keep bringing new models out at that point.

After working with a new company and seeing there still wasn't many good options out there I figured we better tackle one again!

Nice box!

I would definitely be interested. 10" would be more than sufficient to move air around the trunk space.

The hard work of creating a prototype is already done. Have you made a mold out of the box already?

I'm still working on the prototype for our enclosure line, will post pics up once it's further along. Have some work out of town to tackle for a few days unfortunately.

I struggle with ensuring the enclosure has the proper volume, even with driver displacement. Too many people throw random subs in any old enclosure with no respect to the subs enclosure requirements. If you make a custom box, I would provide a list of drivers that will be optimal for it. I ended up purchasing one of the first 2015+ boxes and bought the sub based on the boxes volume. The worst part? I had to email the company to find out the interior enclosure volume... sigh.

So, my advice, if you’re offering an enclosure that has (for example) 1ft^3 volume, make sure you say “subs x, y and z will work with it based on their displacement. Only use these recommended subs or your bass will sound like trash!”

It gets even more complicated than that as it is a combination of subwoofer and enclosure built to the environment that it is installed in. Get any of those variables wrong and it is back to the drawing board... BTDT more times than I care to count.

While I am not saying this about the OP, I can say that many pre-fab solutions are just to fit something in there without taking the environment or subwoofer into consideration. As a result, there is usually a nice bump in response around the peak transfer frequency of the vehicle, then the bass drops off like a rock from there. At least that has been my general experience with sealed 10" subwoofers in pre-fab fiberglass enclosures.

We always list the enclosure's volume on our website and usually try to include some well known subs that fit and work well.

There are hundreds of different subwoofers out there, especially when you factor in previous models/versions of current manufactures and discontinued models. If a customer has a specific model or two in mind we do whatever we can to help determine fitment and see if it's specs will work well in our enclosure, it's just nearly impossible to have an accurate and update list of every model out there without physically having that subwoofer available in the shop.

Physical fitment can be a bit tricky as the subwoofer usually sits in the enclosure at an angle, the back wall of the enclosure is contoured to the vehicle (not flat even walls) so figuring a max mounting depth isn't possible. It depends on the subwoofer's overall depth along with its magnet diameter and profile/shape. Usually the wider the magnet the shallower the depth needs to be and vise versa due to the actual sides of the magnet hitting the back/side walls, not the bottom of the magnet like you'd find in a standard MDF enclosure.

This model is looking very good for being able to fit a wide range of subs from entry to high end models with lots of depth with the baffle/subs current positioning in the prototype.

This sounds way more like a ported or any order bandpass enclosure compared to a well build sealed enclosure. This is a bit of a generalization but you can usually vary the volume of a sealed enclosure by quite a bit and still have excellent sound quality and output. A lot manufactures list the smallest sealed volume possible as they know there never is an abundance of space in today's vehicles. You're almost always better to go a little bit bigger than what is listed, but again depends on the specific subwoofer.

Focal is a favorite of mine personally, amazing separates and subwoofers. They list a variety of volumes they recommend for their subs and as you can see below the larger volumes will allow the subwoofer to play lower. Boston Acoustics use to do this as well as a few others.

I've played with a variety of different volumes when doing custom audio builds and test boxes, sometimes due to the space available or a desired response but I've never had a good quality subwoofer in a well built sealed enclosure sound like crap. I have had this issue with ported enclosures as they are way more sensitive to poorly calculated internal box and port volumes.

We've noticed some slight differences with subwoofer placement in the Subaru Sedans, usually behind the seat firing straight back provides the best output/sound quality (A well built MDF enclosure can provie this). When moving it to a side you may loose a small bit of output but we haven't noticed any real loss in sound quality.

If you're building a system to compete with or just trying to get the absolute best sound possible then these little difference can help. Although way more money and work needs to be put into the front stage if this is ones goals. The reality is the majority are just trying to add some good low end to their upgraded sound systems while maintaining the usability of the cargo space for their day to day uses.

I've only dealt with a few other fiberglass enclosures from other companies and have found the majority are just not very well built. Most are stretching a fabric to get the shape and adding a little fiberglass for strength, not nearly enough and generally the seam from the front half to the back is always weak. The only other company besides us that I can recommend from personal experiences is JL Audio and their Stealthbox enclosure line.

There is a company out there called OEM Audio Plus that looks like have already perfected the sound experience in our cars. It may seem pricey at first, but worth it IMO.

Does anyone have experience with their product?

It does seem high for a single 8" sub ... I know there's some other sound things they do, but seems like something you'd need to hear before investing that amount of money

There's a bunch of reviews on iwsti from 2015 but nothing recently. I am skeptical of the sounds for that amount of money, sure the oem integration is nice but for that amount of money a 8" sub isn't going to provide me with enough sound I'm sure. I might just have to find a local shop that can build me something unique, it will probably be cheaper than OEM+.

To access the tailights we need to be able to get into that area.

The enclosure will mount to the vehicle with one bolt through a factory hole, accessed from inside the enclosure. You will have no damage to the panels or vehicle, it's very secure, hidden and also helps with theft this way.
