Angry What's up with gas around here!

Dude, I swaer that in the last week it has gone up over 15 cents! and about 40 cents in the last month!

It used to be that eery station was a bit different in prices but it seems like EVERY station now is like $1.75 or %1.76 for regular unleaded. I swear they are price fixing around here.

This happens all the time, it'll just take a few of those chain emails to circulate about boycotting(sp? whatever) a certain brand and then they drop their prices and then the rest do too.

Or we go to war and then the prices go down...

I laugh at your feeble attempt to stop the oil giant

HA!!!

for all those who did the boycot, it did nothing. I worked in the oil industry for a long time, and we know you'll be back, you and your gas guzzling SUV's, and your turbo this and supercharged that.... You cannot escape our clutches... go ahead, boycot us for a day, that'll show us!!! You'll be back, tomorrow, or the next day, and our prices won't go down, only UP, as punishment for you insubordination!!!!

Sadly, even though the above is a fantasy type thing, it is true... the only way to show big oil that you won't take it any more is to not take it - ANYMORE. Oil is a traded comodity, and like gold, when some sort of supply is threatned, it gets the big bucks rolling... I'm off to perfect my H2O engine... HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA

DO NOT START OR FORWARD CHAIN MAIL!

It is ineffective at changing behavior. (There's an entire web site dedicated to this. I'll find it and post the URL later.) All it does is create traffic, clog up servers, and piss off those of us who know better. Chain letters and junk mail are a disease. Don't spread them.

-Bud

(PS: Yes, gas prices suck lately. Blame George W. and Saddam. Wouldn't it be great if we could get them both out of office.)

Here, if you have the urge to start a chain letter on gas, read this:

reality check..

You think $1.70 is high? try $2.00. right now we're sitting at the same prices as what California has.

As background to illistrate how absurd this is, a job that groses 30k/year will pay just over 50K/year in California. Gas prices in Cali are raised to compensate for the extra costs for emmition controls and the huge number of roads, especially multi tierd highways that are needed to be maintained. So.. where $2/gal is fine in Cali, its outragious here in the Midwest (michigan). So.. be thankful your only paying 1.70 at the pump.. because it costs me $25+ bucks to fill my tank!

EDIT: my mistake.. you were speaking regular unleaded.. which is sitting at about 1.75 here right at the moment.

Dude, where do they get their info from... I worked at Tosco (circleK/76)/Conoco/Phillips in direct support of the oil traders/hedgers/schedulers/movement people. You absolutely CANNOT buy ANY gas that does not have some percentage of Mid-East Oil. Oil is traded like a 4th graders lunch at the lunch table, and once it hits a ship/tank/pipe/truck/rail it is just a simple comodity, and often mixed with other product to get the desired mix. It isn't really trackable (other than origin ship, like this ship just filled up in Iraq, it is iraqi oil, but once it is piped off it can't be traced, much like diamonds)

edit:
hehehe.. please disregard the above, I just read page 2 of the site, and it seemed to be similar to what I was saying, though still a bit erroneous...

I just payed $2.19!!!

That whole not buying gas for a day thing is lame! It's not like anybody's gonna stop driving for a day. So we all still buy the same amount of gas!

Yeah, I think that some of their data is suspect, but the basic info is pretty good. Better then what goes around in chain letters anyway.

My take: Gas is an inelastic market (meaning that we'll pay whatever they charge because we need it). So oil companies take any excuse to jerk the price around. However, they're smart enough to know that if they leave it way too high for too long then the the populous and the automotive industry will do something (like make a big switch to alternative fuels). So, the yank the price WAAAAAAAY up at the slightest excuse then bring it back down to a slightly elevated level and we all feel good about it.

Of course, they can't completely control the price due to the fact that, as Bill said above, oil is traded on an open market as a commodity. So, competition does drive it down until they all get a bug in their bonnets.

Sound about right to you Bill, or am I missing something key?

sounds right on Bud.... adding that the big 5 or 6 players in the market talk about prices without actually talking about prices, as that would be illegal. They like to make the big bucks, and will lower prices when they feel they have made enough this round...

AMPM/Arco always has lower prices, because they don't have the best additives, but I ALWAYS fill-er-up at an AMPM with no worries. Detergent-smergent.. put in some high grade Exxon every 4th or 5th tank and it's all good...

another tip, NEVER use a station that has a re-fuel tanker filling tanks, the crap that gets stirred up from the bottom of the tanks is enough to make you want to use a coffee filter every time... Takes a good 4-6 hours for things to settle right, and away from the intake pumps...

and CircleK/76/Conoco/Phillips is phasing out MTBE additaves for all you purists...

I wish priceline.com was still doing the prepaid gas thing. That would save me a lot. Unfortunatly they figured out they were loosing too much money and discontinued the program about 1.5 years ago.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't even know how the supply chain works. What chains buy from OPEC?

How does the war threat actually affect OPEC prices?

What are ONLY USA crude stations?

How many barrels from each source?

Boycott? You really think you can take a crack rock away from a junky? The key is for US production to step up and advertise "made in the USA" products for about the same damn inflated prices you see here.

I totally disagree with that chain letter going around

On top of that all of our Gas on the west coast comes from oil drilled in Alaska, so the West Coast should really not be affected...

It's all a game!
They'll jack the prices up to $2.50, and then lower them to $2.25 and everybody will be happy! They do it every year!

I agree. I am now paying around $13 per day just to drive to work. I'm going to need to find a closer job or get a raise...
