If you've ever read up on the event, it really was a prefect storm of events that ultimately lead up to the explosion. Russian officials knew the "what" part of the events but never found out the "why" because the crew that put the disaster in motion were all dead by early May 1986 due to ARS.

I think that gave the writers an opportunity to say "this is what happen, here's our interpretation of of how it happened" and they skipped right to the boom in the opening minutes.

I've been fascinated with Chernobyl for years so I've been looking forward to this series. The first episode didn't disappoint. I would have shat myself if I was unfortunate enough to witness this @:59 firsthand:

Not that any of these guys probably lived past morning.

I wondered if they would have even been able to get that close without their faces melting off like RoTLA.

Yeah, what I was wondering. We can only assume that was the reactor core melting down, so be it either intense fire, super-heated steam, or 1.21 gigawatts of radiation, I really doubt those guys would actually be able to stand anywhere near there. But it sure makes a sweet visual! It looks like the ****ing Eye of Sauron!

Google "seconds from disaster chernobyl" - It's a great explanation of the events leading up to the whole thing.

But yeah...I too kinda wish the show had more of the "this is what lead to this" thing. Kinda.

It seems likely the rest of the miniseries will devote time to this.

I think the show will lead to this. The guy that hangs himself clearly ends up getting more info.

That picture of the 100's of gas masks and a cash register was pretty ****ing ominous.

Im sure it will be discussed but I think the series is going to be more about the evacuation/cover up

The Russians never got the full details of what went wrong because those people died within days/weeks. They still don't know for sure who, and under what circumstances, made the decision to push the "nuclear button" (pun intended) to re-insert all the rods to shutdown the reactor shortly before the explosion.

Everyone pretty much agrees that the situation was already beyond saving at the point the AZ5 button was pushed but the rods jamming due to the heat directly lead to the steam explosion that destroyed the facility.

I can only assume that tapes he made were more about the government's nonchalant reaction to the diaster and downplaying of the criticality of the effects.

That was absolutely terrifying. Wonder what kind of impact this had on my family; they all lived in Kyiv in 1986 and my cousin was born July that year.

Loving this show so far. Nice combination of suspense, good acting, production value, etc. The first thought that came to my mind in E1 was "why does Jared Harris hang himself in every TV show I see him in"

this might be a dumb question.....but what made the blades come apart on the 1st chopper? Was it heat? Or did the pilots just die and hit something and they blew apart? Or was it the radiation attacking the metal cuz it was such a intense beam of it coming out of the reactor?

That episode was fantastic, and the diver scene was off the hook. The background sound really set a heavy tone and the wrap up with the lights going out was awesome. Im happy this series is as good as i hoped.

They hit a crane cable, i believe it was the only vehicle accident of the whole ordeal.

The link that Banman posted talks all about the helicopters they used and about the accident with the one helicopter.

Riveting. The hierarchy of the Soviet culture seems so archaic. The little guys knew what the problem was - core exploded. Higher ups were like - you're an idiot. Go back and fix it or it's the Gulag for you!
