Interesting...not an EV (yet), and not for US (ever).

I would also like an EV van. Well, doesn't have to be a van. 7 passenger seating, sliding rear doors, fold-flat / removable seats behind the first row, 300 mile range.

But I'll go 50K for it...under 30K is 2010 pricing, I'm afraid.

A fairly unbiased and overall positive review of the ID4

The wife and I went to an event on Saturday and one of the "vendors" was the South Carolina EV Club.

Mostly a bunch of Tesla bros showing off their cars but they did have a few local dealers showing off their company's EV offerings.

Just spending five minutes checking out the ID4, I was impressed with the package at the price point.

It's bigger than a Mach E at a $6k lower starting point. The "Launch Edition" they had on display was well equipped and was barely more than a Leaf SL Plus.

That being said, an EV depending of VAG electronics? Not even once

Doug demuro commented on his review how bad the infotainment is. He usually doesn't get caught up in the infotainment stuff in his reviews, so if he says its bad, it must be bad.

The display software and the charging interfacing for the ID4 have both had a variety of overall critical reviews, which for short term reviews may seem not seem like deal breakers, or "will be improved by future updates" but to me.. those are the two main ways an owner interacts with the vehicle besides driving it and would be a huge issue for me and I would think anyone who isn't an EV enthusiast / early adopter as well.

It's not a bad first offering by VW..

but given that they had huge software issues with the ID3, and this is what the ID4 with the 'gen 2' of that same software is offering is not encouraging.

Everything I've read about the ID4 and the Electrify America chargers parrots the issues early on with the Mach E.

Considering EA is a VAG operation, I'm sure they are working on a software fix as we speak.

Re daily actions being annoying:

We have a non-Tesla EVSE in our garage, because prior Leaf, RAV4 EV, and the two PacHys.

Thus to charge my 3 was a matter of the Tesla to J1772 adapter. That part was fine. What was annoying is that to release the adapter from the Tesla's port required either opening up the app on the phone or opening the car door, leaning over to the center screen, hitting a button on the right of said screen, then exiting and removing the adapter.

Small action, but annoying. (Tesla's own EVSE has a button on the handle to unlock it, iirc.)

That's funny because the Leaf, at least the first Gen., is the exact opposite.

You can only lock the port by pushing a button under the steering wheel.

I've never had to worry about it since the Leaf charges in the garage

Correct. Tesla has a button on the handle. If you use an aftermarket EVSE you unlock the car to release the J plug.

It wasn't just pulling on a door to unlock the car. It was unlocking the car and pushing the Unlock Charge Port button way over there on the screen.

Yeah it's annoying when using the J1772 adapter, Tesla could easily work around thus by implementing an 'unlock charge port' button somewhere in the mobile app

The ID4 isn't exactly their first EV offering, the e-Golf has been here in the US since 2015. I have a 2017 e-Golf and after close to a month of ownership, absolutely love it. The infotainment in my car is the same as in the traditional Golf, so it's not like the ID4 system at all.

... and that's before you pay $25 for the "premium access" upgrade at any Tesla SC station.
