Well, as long as there is some sort of protection, it should be fine. I've seen plenty of metal ones fail, too. I'd like to think there was some measure taken.

My post from N&R GTI thread.

MK7 GTI:
+ Interior looks great and generally feels great
+ Engine isn't super powerful, but the overall character of it is very sporty, eager, and linear. Feels like a great evolution of my MKV GTI 2.0T. Continuous improvement.
+ DSG is one hell of a gearbox. Crisp, fast downshifts. Super fast upshifts.
+ Suspension is not harsh but still feels very taut and communicative
+ Feels like a comfy pair of jeans in a lot of ways to this ex GTI owner
+ Touchscreen is nice. The little screen between the tach and speedo is really nice.
+ Looks like a GTI: very handsome
- Obvious cost cutting in parts of the interior. Steering wheel and seat material was somewhat disappoint tactilely.
- Interior layout isn't as pleasing as the MKV and MKVI

'15 WRX:
+ Engine feels very strong at the low end and midrange. Great daily driver character.
+ Seats are a lot better than I remember the old ones.
+ Auto HVAC standard
+ Tons of grip, chassis feels better than ever
+ Interior is price appropriate. Steering wheel is finally as pleasing as I remember the Momo wheel being.
- Engine really falls flat on the top end. I'm sure it makes fine power up there, but it doesn't feel like it does.
- Felt sort of lost with the shifter a few times. Not as precise as I'd like.

If AWD and reliability weren't a priority, I'd go with the GTI. Really hard to choose between the two but I'd give the GTI a very slight edge.

Sidenote, I've been driving a Veloster non-turbo all week as a rental for work here in Alabama. The dual clutch in that car has highlighted how excellent the VW DSG is. The Veloster transmission is slow to shift and rough at low speeds. Lots of shift shock through the box. The car itself is an alright cheap sporty car chassis, but the drivetrain is garbage. No throttle response and a very narrow power band (5500RPM to 6500RPM is the only place it seems to want to move). Visibility is dreadful and the asymmetric design drives my OCD crazy. The Veloster Turbo might be OK, but I honestly prefer our Prius v wagon to the Veloster. It is at least honest about what it is rather than writing sporty checks it can't cash. And the Prius actually acts like it wants to move when you mash the throttle. The Veloster? Nothing. Nothing. And then it finally downshifts to get the revs up to 5000. Guh.

Anyway, great time to be buying a $25k sport compact.

My Focus and the standard Velosturd are rated for the same HP and weigh about the same (Focus may be a bit more) but goddamn if my car doesn't feel like a top fuel dragster in comparison. Hyundai lies about everything else, it wouldn't shock me if that engine was making substantially less than their claim.

What is your definition of power? 400whp.. no, it probably won't last long. Apr stg 1-2... Probably will be just fine.

People have been running 400whp+ thru them for quite a while with no issues. They are way more stout than you give them credit for. Even I, a general VW disliker, am impressed with them

For the record I have a 2013 Jetta TDi stick shift, wanted to try a diesel, wish I had gotten something more fun...but it gets great mileage!!!

Pretty irrelevant to the discussion. I just don't much care for the DSG, it'd be the transmission I'd buy if I physically couldn't drive a manual anymore.

Much like a ST or WRX wagon would be very appealing to me I would also go wild for a GTI wagon.

Seriously the first manufacturer to put a wagon version out of their $25k hot hatch/sedan is going to sell, like 10 more cars.

Finally going to test drive one of these on Friday. Dealer has about 40 on the lot. I'm ready to trade in my torqueless SI.

Not sure if I will wait for the Performance pack or not. I've never done an autoX and doubt I will. I definitely want the lighting package.

Today is the day to buy a new car this time of year. They'll bend over backwards to get their numbers up that last bit. Don't wait until Friday.

Hmmm. That's a damn a good point. I don't have much going on tonight. Maybe I will go and try to bend them over a bit.

What dealer and what spec? DSG or Manual? Do they have any PP's on the lot?

Hehe, PP's.

PPs aren't out yet, or at least, they weren't out a few days ago. My understanding was that they were supposed to start production in Mexico this week with deliveries of very early orders mid January.

I see people talking about the PP for autocross or track.. hell, that thing should make all the difference in rain and snow as well. Plus... big brakes.. I like big brakes.

Oh, Rexican, if you can't make the lighting package work out.. check out the Golf R replica headlights. They're projector bi-xenons with the same LED DRLs, no amber reflector, cornering lights, and about $600. You miss out on the swivelling and self-leveling motors that the lighting package has, though.

If I were in the market for a car right now, this is what I'd buy.

Really seems to be the best compromise of a car out there between practicality, price and something an enthusiast can drive and really enjoy it.

Mrs. Lag '14 Mazda 3 is good fun, so much so she's taken to corner carving when she gets the chance but I think the lack of power would get to me after a while. DD'ed a old 325i and it was... adequate but really got to me when I put my foot down and nothing happened

I really want to go test drive the new 7 to see how it compares / is improved upon my mkvi. I know I've said it a ton, but my gti has been the most enjoyable car I've owned. My only regret was not getting a 4 door.

I tested teh 4 door Gti DSG with autobahn package. I liked teh car, interior was alright, brakes felt ok, turn in was nice, trans was really quick but confusing as ****, Power was adequate and fairly linear. Not being able to disable the intrusive TC was a pain, the car did push some but i couldnt really get much speed to see how bad the push was.

Cons were as usual the electronics. Salesman wanted to show me the trunk space. He hits the trunk button on the key fob and nothing happened, he hits it again and nothing. Friend of mine suggested double tapping the button, this time the trunk pops but only opens 3/4 of an inch and then relatches so you cant open it any more. He hits the button 1 more time and it releases the hatch.

My wifes 03 beetle has been doing this same trunk pop bull**** since 2003. She had it back at the dealer on 3 separate occasions and it still does it to this day.

You should be able to hold the TC down and enable two-stage.

hmmm... Never had an issue with any electronics on my 2012... or any of the other ones.

Yeah, TC can be turned off but not stability control, IIRC you can do it with a VagCom cable. IMO VW electronics are hit/miss.

I did it with VAGCOM on my Golf R.

The new ones are supposed to be two-stage, though.

The VAGCOM options for the mk7 allow you to make it 'three-stage'. On - Sport - Off
