Default Grassroots Motorsports bugeye WRX wagon project

Greetings. I've been lurking here for information and looking for a new set of EJ205 heads, but I thought I'd take a moment to formally say hello and why I'm here.

I work at Grassroots Motorsports magazine, and we've got a project WRX with 200,000 miles. Of course, we upped the boost, oil-starved it on track and nuked the engine. As I've disassembled the thing, I kept finding bad and worse news.

Crank bearings chipping away.
Rod bearings spun, and hammered hard with detonation.
A split turbo inlet hose (probably causing a lean condition leading to said detonation).
Burned and cracked valves.
Cracked heads, some completely from exhaust port to spark plug.
Best of all: Bent crankshaft.

So, the only thing salvageable here is the bare block (and the rods, but we're using new anyway, because duh), but even the block needs an overbore because the cylinder bores are worn out of round.

Anyway, you guys can follow along the build process and see its history here:
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/pro...u-impreza-wrx/

But all the really detailed updates will go in the magazine.

Anyway, just dropping a hello. If any of you have good leads on a bare head without cracks, let me know. I'm on the market.

I've been reading about this build on your web site, looking good.

Good luck finding new heads on here. It shouldn't be too much of a problem.

i've subscribed for years and read with interest the mag and that article.

The byword on nasioc is research, even for Grassroots Motorsports. check FS threads for used engine parts and read the engine build threads for ideas.

Lot's of ways to go depending on your goals...or the magazine's goals. What is the purpose(s) of the car? What drivetrain and suspension mods will take place to meet those goals and support the engine mods?

Some threads of note:

Built motor discussion:

Transmission and driveline:

Wagon suspension; post your set-ups

and private FS engine/power/exhaust

GL with your build and look forward to what happens.

Thanks for the input. Research is always the name of the game, though in our case we usually call up shops for advice when we can. When shops aren't open, we go to the Internet. I've already read a lot of what you guys have here, so I feel fairly familiar with the car. But if there's anything you think is missing from the stories or that you'd like to see discussed/tested, please do let me know. I'll see what we can do.

Alan,

Great to see you on here. I've been following your magazine articles too. I noticed when you had the engine tune done there was no mention of a boost increase, the article implying all the power increase you got was from the tune and pipes you put on. But in the blown engine update the magazine did mention a boost increase. Would have been nice to see what was from the pipes and what was from the boost increase.

I also saw a sidebar on the engine tune article about adding extra gauges. Maybe it would be nice to discuss if you had added an oil pressure gauge you may have caught cornering oil starvation problems before they were catastrophic?

Keep it up - love seeing the car in your magazine.

Love those wheels. What are they and what size rim and tire are you running?

So what happened to this project car? Sold? Destroyed? You folks need more Subie content, especially since that's what you promised when you bought up SubieSport magazine...
