Another Air Bag Recall?
Did anyone else get a second letter in the mail regarding the airbag recall? I've already taken my car in for the initial recall and thought that would be the complete fix. But apparently not.
The letter did not give out that much information on what else needed to fixed. It pretty much just said that more parts have arrived in order to deal with the recall. Not really psyched about them having to take apart my dashboard again since it already rattles from them taking it apart the first time.

I had heard about this from someone else. He received a letter recently as well. Apparently some were replaced with the same airbag as the original because they didn't have enough to replace them all. So they are now taking care of getting the proper airbag into the cars that need them.
Once again, this is what he passed in to me from what the dealer told him after he inquired about the letter. |

I had my second done this month. Apparently the first fix was just a bandaid, but the second is the actual, permanent fix?

Dont quite remember the details on the notice since I briefly skimmed through it and became angry when I read it hasnt been resolved. lol. I'll check again when I get home.
How frustrating. Did they mention to you that they replaced the airbag all over again or did some other type of repair? |

Ok, now I'm aggravated again. I searched to remind myself what the issue was again and found this: https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/09/us/su...rnd/index.html Quote:

Great so more rattles in our already rattly subarus. I just cringe thinking about the repair cause the last time I took my car in, I found a couple of screws in my center cup holder. Couldnt find where their home was so I assumed it belonged somewhere inside the dash.

Honestly, I would expect the airbag thing to be an issue for quite some time. It's still uncertain how far Takata actually fudged the numbers. Since they already publicly apologized for wrongdoing in Japan, the domestic pressure of investigations has evaporated and it's unlikely all of the evidence was uncovered. Hopefully they continue to make things right and get everyone who needs airbags changed.

According to the letter I got the first recall was a "replace with like" (the bandaid fix) since the defect was corrosion related (I think?). This bought them a few years to do the proper replacement which is this round. It all makes some sense, but is still rather annoying.

First hand experience - probably put in a hundred-fifty or so inflators before I quit Subaru.
When Subaru first started replacing air bag inflators there were no updated inflators. ALL inflators recalled and the replacements had ammonium nitrate for fuel. The issue causing the recall was over time heat and moisture caused the ammonium nitrate to become more volatile when ignited and could cause a larger explosion than designed for. Initial replacements were brand new, but the old design, and were deemed safe until they could ramp up manufacturing of the new design. Subaru techs (at least the ones attending classes in ATL) were told there would be a second round when a new design came out. As I recall Outbacks started getting the new design first and then as more came available they started replacing the ones that had the older design installed in the first round. Seems like this started happening 2 years ago. The original and original replacement was an all metal canister. The updated supposedly safe inflator has pink plastic ends. And yes, there are a bunch of hack techs out there taking short cuts and breaking stuff instead of taking the extra 15 minutes to do the job correctly. |

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Just find it odd subaru would tell the public to get their cars fixed when in fact it's just a patch. That's why I was kind of confused by the latest notice. I only imagine a huge lawsuit if someone got their car "fixed" the first time around and got into an accident where the airbag caused serious injury. |

Pics
Make sure you take pics of the dash in the parking lot when dropping it off. I ended up with screw driver marks around the radio bezel this last airbag go around.

What is considered a duration of time though where the ignitor can degrade to the point where it becomes more volitile? Is it one year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years??? Assuming of course the conditions of humidity that can cause it to degrade.
