Intake icing over
I just went on a bit of a road trip to Wyoming. While driving through Nevada, I started losing power, and having some really hard hitching, especially when going down hills.
Finally, I pulled in at a gas station, popped my hood, and my entire cone filter was iced up. I don't have a skid plate/under engine splash guard. Will installing a skid plate, and getting a filter sock remedy this in the future, or do I need to get a new filter? Stock airbox is a no-go, since the one that came with the truck is completely trashed, and the Snorkus is missing. Only way I could make the airbox work is by either buying a totally new one (not going to happen), or to glue the existing one shut, which... Well, I have a K&N panel filter for it, but I'm not sure that's a great idea.

The sock might help. An under tray might help a bit. If you are getting splash directly onto it than that will help a lot. Was it freezing fog or snow on the roads?

Can you not get a used airbox? They're usually VERY cheap, and would 100% solve your issue while actually functioning better than an aftermarket "CAI". The snorkus is largely optional, and generally just cuts down on induction noise.

+1 for stock airbox. If you are making under 300/350WHP, the stock airbox is more than fine, and keeps intake temps nice and low with very little heat soak.
I just sold mine otherwise id offer it. |

As an update, I do have a sock in the mail, and a Rallitek skid plate as well. I wish I lived closer to them, I'd rather have saved the shipping costs and just picked it up myself, but it was cheaper to ship than the gas to drive up and back with it. >_> |

Per this post, the stock airbox is good to around 400hp, so it's fine for just about any stock location turbo.
I did a quick search on car-part.com and found pages upon pages of cheap used turbo subaru airboxes. EBay also has plenty, and any local subaru enthusiast group should be able to find one as well. That part (#46051AE000 for the lower, upper is the same X-ref) is listed as fitting just about every turbo subaru from 2001 to 2008, so you have lots of options! So before you go dumping time and money on an inferior solution, just pick up a cheap used airbox and enjoy your cold, clean, non-icy air intake. |

Why would you have to buy a new one? I see them all the time for sale both locally and used on the various forums. Here is one (two, actually) for sale since yesterday in oregon for $30-50. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...2496536796062/ See one on ebay for the same plus shipping.

I have had this intake system since 2006, and have put well over 250,000 miles on it, and it has never given me any issue. Quote:
I've already got parts in the mail, they'll be here tomorrow, and quite honestly, the conditions I was driving in were pretty extreme. I seriously don't want to waste my money on an airbox to replace something that has served me well for such a long time. |

Yeah, thinking about going elsewhere again. Not that there really is an elsewhere. Maybe just sell it, and get a Ford or something. >_>
I also doubt that a stock airbox would have 'fixed' this, since I had roughly 200 lbs of ice basically blasted all over the exterior of the truck when I had totally iced up the intake. There was so much stuff flying around, it was literally everywhere. It was stuck to the bottom of the hood, the firewall, whatever. Tomorrow I will hopefully install the skid plate, and just not deal with this again. |

Agree, get a ford and give the subie to someone who appreciates it.
How would ice have gotten INSIDE a sealed plastic box that only opens into the inner fender well? Unless of course, you also don't believe in fender liners.... |

How do you figure ice would have gotten inside of the airbox?

This also is 100% NOT HELPFUL because it's a bit impossible to pull over in a really remote place, with a truck full of crap, with NO CELL RECEPTION, order a part, and install it right then and there. My actual question was if a filter sock and a skid plate would have helped. I have no intention of ordering an air box. If I did, I would have had one before I left on my trip. I did order a skid plate and a filter sock. I'm done with this thread. |

probably, less slush up in there, the better
probably not, it'll just get caked up probably not, thaw & let it dry been there, done that, use self taping screws. |
