Please Help, Highway Shimmy Wont Go Away
Hey guys,
So I’ve had a shimmy whenever I’m between 65-80 (sometimes faster) and I can’t figure it out. I’ve had the tires balanced and it was still there, thought maybe my rotors were warped so I changed them, torqued wheels all around. I still get a shimmy and sometimes when I let off the gas it feels hard and lightens up a bit. Could it be my driveshaft ? I’ve seen a few comments of people having the same problem but I don’t hear any clunking or anything like that. Is there a way to check if it’s bad without actually taking it out? Appreciate any help!!

Have you had an alignment done yet? Might be something to consider. Usually rotate balance and alignment go hand and hand. If you verified you dont have any bent wheels, id probably do an alignment next.

What, if any, suspension mods do you have? What tires, and size?

My shimmy didn’t go away until I had the wheels road force balanced.

Ah, that’s such a pain. I do have 17inch Rotas I just picked up used so maybe putting brand new tires on them and throwing them on will change the car. However, if new wheels AND brand new tires don’t fix it, could it possibly be driveshaft or axle related even if I do not hear any clicking or clunking? |

Now that I think about it, that could be my probably. I got an alignment done years ago and haven’t had one since. I was hoping to grab the white line rollcenter bump steer kit just since my car has 100k and I’m in jersey where salt kills bushings. |

Wheel bearings? My buddy's G35 did this badly and he almost wiped out driving in the rain.

I would get an alignment to rule it out, but I'm guessing the tires are causing some tram lining. Basically, you're feeling the minor deviations in the road surface. This happens more as tires get wider. A surfer sidewall or stiffer suspension parts can increase this feeling. With the age of your BCs, they probably aren't sliding as smooth as they should which could enhance the feeling as well. |

Would the coil overs cause a squeak at all if they don’t slide smooth? I’m going to get an alignment and see if that fixes it, if not, I’ll try the new rims and tires I have but after that I guess I will check the suspension and maybe wheel bearing. Really hoping it’s just the tires I have since they are a few years old and stretched on 18x9.5 |

Jack it up if you can and wiggle each wheel. Check to see if there's any play up/down (ball joint) or left/right (tie rod). Play can also be from a bad wheel bearing. Do you hear any unusual noises while driving at highway speed, like a whirring or roaring?
Pull your wheels off and have a good gander at your tires. Is the tread wearing evenly? While your wheels are off take a good look at your control arm bushings. Mileage is important, 100k is a good time to start looking at all the things I mentioned. Check out this post about your car's midlife crisis and you. |

I've definitely found that stretched tires tram line more. I stretched one set and hated the way they felt driving. Coilovers can make all kinds of different noises when they are going bad; squeaking, thunking, etc. Worn tires will also tram line more than new. I'd guess the combination is the main contributor to what you're feeling. Especially during the winter months when the road becomes more uneven in colder weather. |

really?? you're using tires off a 2015?? you should replace your tires they are beyond their life span. crappy tires will cause loss of stability...
