Which engine again potentially has problems?
***Ok I found the thread referring to the DOHC 2.5L in the GT MY97***
I was reading a few threads about head gasket failures and I'm confused. I'm shopping around for a used Subie with a friend. Which engine again has the problems according to some? I was going to look at a 1997 Legacy Wagon with a 2.5L engine. I think that's the DOHC, has 67,000 miles on it with no work (ie belts or seals) changed. Is there a 2.5L SOHC or a 2.2L DOHC? Is that the potentially problem engine - the 2.5 DOHC? Is working one, either the 2.2L or 2.5L, any easier than the other in doing a headgasket or timing belt? Thx

The 2.2 is easier to work on and tends to be a better lasting motor (and non interference). The 2.5 is harder to work on, but has much more power and torque (intereference). If you plan on buying a 2.5 with that kind of mileage, get ready to do a main seal, cam seals, water pump (prevenatative) and timing belt or a 60k service. It probably has a main seal leak that needs to be remedied anyway.
I have been around, and driven both of the engines extensively and have to say that the DOHC EJ25 is worth the extra maintenance (some have head gasket probs, install updated gasket). My rally car has a 2.2 and it can run hard all day at 4500-6500 rpms and not miss a lick, but doesn't have the torque of the 2.5. It is very common for them (ej22) to run upwards of 300k+ miles on the highway. There are EJ25s that have over 275k w/ no probs. Best thing to do is drive a Legacy with each motor, see which you like best, and prioritize power or reliability. |

The 2.2 is SOHC, the 2.5 (96-99) is DOHC, and the 00 up is SOHC.
All of these engines can have head gasket issues, but the DOHC seems to have the most (easily remedied). Even though that's the case, still wouldn't give mine up. |
