It's official, I'm an XT owner!
Just got off the phone with my dealer in Eau Claire, WI (Chilson Subaru) and he was able to swap my WRX wagon order for the XT.
He only has the Java black in inventory but is checking with his supplier about bringing in the red or the silver. I'm happy with either. Hell, I'm ecstatic. Turns out that the 04 STi hood scoop that I ordered for my WRX isn't compatible with the XT. However, he's pretty sure that the 03 scoop is so I'm calling the parts guys here in Oz tomorrow to see what they have (thank god the STi has been here for awhile). Thanks again to all of you who helped me out. Couldn't have done it without your words of wisdom (and of course my dealer, bless his cheese-head heart). I'll post pics when I pick it up in 3 weeks. Well, 2:15 AM here so I'm off for some zzzzzs. Cheers mates.

Congrats and enjoy western Wisconsin. (The XT does come with the Cold Weather Package standard, right? ) We'll be looking for a road test review in the near future!

Thanks all for the kudos. That was a quick 4 hours of sleep. Woke up and thought I had been dreaming all of this.
Two quick questions:

I'd like to get a set of aluminum pedals (like the ones I had in my WRX). Any suggestions where to find them? Someone mentioned having the STi set so I assume this is okay in the XT as well?
Jack said the linkage system b/w the XT and the WRX are the same so putting the short throw shifter that I had ordered for my WRX shouldn't be a problem. If anyone's heard different could you let me know? Hopefully I can go with the Subie model that's available for the WRX (instead of a 3rd party flavor such as Kartboy's).
Gotta go find some pics of the XT. When I email my mates in the States they're going to say, "Huh, what's an XT". Cheers Last edited by Ibizan; 06-02-2003 at 11:45 PM. |

SO does that mean that the dealer in Wi has a XT in stock right now? If they do, I might have to take a road trip to take a look at one this week. |

Thanks Ibizan. If the price is right and it's a 5M, then I might be driving home in a new xt as well. Need a new car anyway since my wrx is sitting in the garage waiting for a gear set from MRT Australia...

Not if I can't get to if first. What kinda pricing were they asking on it? What packages? Just heard back from Matt (dealer) with the scoop. XTs are due in on the 16th but there's wiggle room before/after so he can email me or anyone else if you're interested. As for pricing, Chilson Subaru was recommended to me by a mate of mine who's a WRX fanatic (he has two of them) in Sussex, WI and I owe this guy many a case of beer for this. He told me that they're a family run dealership and the service is untouchable. I ordered my WRX with heaps of options for $500 over invoice (including all the options at invoice). I could have gotten it for straight invoice but was taught to leave something on the table and Matt Chilson has been the duck's nuts with the deal (sorry, in Aussie terms that means "really cool"). I wanted the 7-year/100,000-mile Gold Plus extended warranty ($0 deductible) and he offered it to me at cost ($1230 vs. $2495 msrp). He's also been able to get me great prices on 17" wheels/tires, a clear bra install, and tinting based on his contacts within the community. I was even having the STi hood scoop installed, god bless him. This is why I felt bad asking him if he could swap my WRX order for the XT. He didn't even blink, just emailed me and said that he was checking on whether he could get the silver or red for me. I have the same deal with the XT that I had with the WRX. Now he's busy checking on aluminum pedal replacements for my XT and a short-throw shifter. He emailed me earlier this morning and said he was able to get the platinum silver for me with all my options (and I have heaps of them). The only thing extra it came with was turbo gauge. I didn't request it because She Who Must Be Obeyed didn't want it on the WRX. Now that it's available on the XT, I've been informed by her highness that it will be a nice Father's Day gift. Go figure. I'll check on package that comes with his incoming XT. I can't recommend Chilson Subaru enough. I'll be going back there when it comes time for me to get the WRX...haven't given up on that dream. Cheers |

Ibizan's great news
"Congrats, congrats, congrats! I'm seriously excited for you!
Three weeks and we might have our first driving report on a XT! Ken" Three weeks?!? If mine isn't here in less than three weeks, I'm gonna go stark raving bonkers. I haven't selected a new car for myself since 1989 (versus TWO for my wife since then!), and I can't believe how much I'm anticipating my XT's arrival. I helped one of my sisters buy a new Audi A4 Avant 3.0 6-speed a year ago (loaded, gorgeous red, sumptuous grey leather, $38,000!), and she loves it (who wouldn't?). I think she's just a bit condescending about my low-rent $24,000 XT. That will probably last right up to the moment when I suck her stylish doors off... I have a feeling that a Forester XT, handling almost as well as a WRX but with a large additional dose of bottom-end and midrange torque, is going to make Ibizan so happy that he'll never once pine over the adolescent WRX he didn't buy instead. Here's to many happy miles, Ibizan. If someday you're cruising at triple digits and see a ridiculous old grey-bearded fart in another silver XT pulling up alongside and grinning from ear to ear, wave! That'll be me! - jack |

Short-shift linkage
Ibizan sez, "Jack said the linkage system b/w the XT and the WRX are the same so putting the short throw shifter that I had ordered for my WRX shouldn't be a problem. If anyone's heard different could you let me know? Hopefully I can go with the Subie model that's available for the WRX (instead of a 3rd party flavor such as Kartboy's)."
Ibizan, I was going on the basis of considerable research on the 'net over the past several weeks. However, Ken has subsequently written that the Forester's shift lever is different from a WRX's (longer, presumably to suit the higher-off-the-floor seating position). He said he had a longer short-throw lever specially made for his Forester. I suppose it might be possible to use one designed for a WRX and either put an extension on top or else choose a shift knob that is taller than the original - but by all means get clarification on this particular point before buying a conversion lever. Just goes to show - you can't trust senile old-timers. - jack |

XT price
DoctorNick asked "Not if I can't get to if first What kinda priceing were they asking on it? What packages? dam, I gotta call them after work tomarrow "
Mine, including Popular Equip Grps 1C and 3B plus the column-mount boost gauge and rubber mats and just $100 over invoice, is going to cost $23,978 delivered (plus title and license). In other words, I'm getting exactly the equipment I want and not one thing I don't want (such as the expensive, pointless rear spoiler), for under $24K. Unfortunately, my trade (actually, my wife's previous ride) isn't worth squat to my Subaru dealer (who just yesterday offered me less than half of Kelley Blue Book Wholesale), so I've still gotta find a better arrangement for that end of it. Know anybody who wants a '91 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD with just 106K miles? - jack |

Quid pro quo...
Ibezan sez "The only thing extra it came with was turbo gauge. I didn't request it because She Who Must Be Obeyed didn't want it on the WRX. Now that it's available on the XT, I've been informed by her highness that it will be a nice Father's Day gift. Go figure. "
Different spin: She gets the Forester she demanded; you (sacrificial lamb that you are) gave up your lifelong dream of a WRX for a stodgy, schoolmarmish, aerodynamic-as-a-barn-door SUV. It's only right that you get the small pleasure of watching your boost gauge needle twitch and secretly smile while you absolutely humiliate owners of much more espensive but far slower cars... - jack |
