08+ wrx pump is working fine for me. It's a little noisy, but it keeps up

Glad to hear things are still working well. Im helping a friend get his parts to swap a 15+ rack with a TSS from engine cradle on his 05 sti. Im in the process of building him a engine for the car. Closed deck, head work etcetc. The car is getting some suspension refreshing and more upgrades as well.

The new rack will be a great addition. Im personally running a few cars with the 15+ racks now.

4-5 years after the install on my STI 04 I started to have some lose direction. The car is running 315 hoosier A7 in autocross 12x time per year, might not be an issue for car with less stress.

Without the extra bracket of the 05+ subframe the bolt have fatigued and broke, here is a picture.

https://img.nasioc.com/image/tboWS

Currently trying to fix this. I'll probably try to add extra support on the top of the bolt like the newer subframe.

Yikes,

That is a lot of tire, do you run in SP, SM, or Prepared? I believe aftermarket subframes are allowed in SM-up, as long as weight is equal. Were they grade 10.9 bolts?

I will keep a close eye as well, I've switched to 275 200TW tires this year, and hoping to get to switch to A7s next season. May have to try and retrofit the brace, or make a similar one.

Not sure if you've seen Big Ron's thread on his install. He used a '13 STi subframe along with a Cusco brace. This may be something we have to do for more extreme use

The pics in his thread are imgur links so may not appear correctly, if they don't you just have to click the imgur link then delete

For reference we were able to modified the 04 subframe to add extra bracket and use the 08+ steering brace with some modification. It's pretty tight to be able to get the rack in and out, took a few hours to do. Easiest route would be to start from an 05+ subframe.

I run SM and I was using 10.9 bolts. You can swap subframe to fit engine from the same brand, but needs to be the same weight and keep suspension geometry. All aftermarket subframe relocate the suspension point which is illegal.

Today I learned that MSI solid rack bushings work well with a VA STi rack on a 2003 WRX. The third bushing functions as the spacer that we need. I didn't notice any increase in NVH and the steering is much sharper. And FWIW, I have a SuperPro bushing on the clamp side.

"the steering is much sharper"
I see you are doing the dragon. Have you tracked the car yet? I'm building an '07 STI for the track with all TSSFab subframes and Oswald front bar, and it has the faster rack. My current car does not have one.
I wonder if it is more of an improved feel for the street and less apparent on the track or the opposite. Certainly, anyone chime in...
I have not run into an issue where I physically need less steering wheel angle (where my arms are crossed up and max'd out) with my '08 track car.
You should consider the TSS subframe for the rear. I saw you writing about rear camber. You need the revised geometry when lowering that the TSS Fab subframe gives you if he has one that fits, like this one.
I really wished I had done solid bushings on my rack. Looks like a good project for my lathe.

I haven't tracked my car yet, it is mostly a touge build which is more about response. I live in East Tennesse where there are very few straight roads so having good steering makes for better daily driving, at least for me.

So, I went from a 16.5:1 rack to the 13:1 rack and it made a big difference IMO. We had an Impreza with a 14.4:1 rack and my WRX steering always felt slower and more numb in comparison. Granted, the 03 WRX has a bigger steering wheel as well and was an older car; but the Impreza always felt sharper even with 150k miles and bad bushings. I went with a smaller STi wheel (plus a telescoping column but that's another story) and all of these helped. FWIW, I'm 6'1" and my hands were hitting my knees when I was making sharp turns. The car is much more driveable which is great because I was considering selling it and going back to the GR chassis.

I am on a BRZ EPAS as well which I am still dialing in, so keep that in mind.

My only issue with TSSFab parts right now is I don't have the money. lol. I plan to pick up their rear subframe and rear knuckles to fix the rear roll center and to raise the rear diff up. But between Brembos, knuckles, hubs, axles, etc... the overall price tag is out of reach at the moment. I will start gathering parts for the swap sometime soon.

Did anyme ever find out more info with the newer STI steering racks?

They have a different computer system that shows the exact models these come on so trusting the "what it fits" section in online sources isn't completely 100 percent. The 34110VB010 is for the WRX STI S209 of which they only sell to people that own one. The 34110VA140 is for the WRX STI Type RA of which anyone can buy. The 34110VA131 (supersedes 34110VA130) is for the WRX STi, WRX STi Limited and WRX STi Premium of which anyone can buy. We couldn't find any individual part differences between these three models so they might actually be the same but labelled differently for maintaining a controlled quantity of replacements for the limited production runs of the S209 and Type RA. An important dealer visible quantity exists for each of these which is called UIO (Units In Operation). The 34110VA131 has much larger UIO than the other two therefore it would makes sense to use that one out of all the 2018+ racks in case it has to be replaced down the line even though they all cost the same. I am going to take a chance on the idea that the Subaru fixed the leaky Valve Steering Gear Box on the 2015-2017 models (34113VA001) in the 2018+ plus models (34113VA031) to justify paying the extra $283 USD MSRP in hopes that I will never have an issue with it. I would love to hear from Kos in the future to validate or correct any of this.

Doing a recent search for 34110VA131 (updated part number for the steering rack) apparently it's been discontinued and superseded by part number 34110VA132. Anyone have any insight as to what changes were made to warrant a new part number? Maybe they made it less prone to leaking.

So, if doing the rack swap and a pump swap with an 08+ steering pump, using the newer lines everything should plug into each other, right? I know people were using adapters and fittings when using the GD pump.

DO NOT USE 491970 Fragola 14mmX1.5 O-ring adapter. Use Earl's 9894DBHERL instead.
Great write up! I am currently following your write up and performing this swap on my 2006 WRX. I am attempting a full conversion from rack to pump with AN lines. What I have noticed so far is that the hard lines use 45 degree flares.

Earl's 9894DBHERL adapter seems to be a straight metric thread that requires an o ring. Correct? How is it not leaking? Or does it have the flare inside similar to Radium Auto's adapter?

Thanks!

Sorry if I'm vague, but if memory serves me, the Earl's fitting has a flat groove type seat in the bottom. That's where the o-ring sits and and what creates the seal. Sorry, but I don't have one I can look at right now.

I too have a TSS front subframe that I need one for. I've been holding off, watching for them on Ebay. I'd like to know if a specific one is better!

I'm wondering if the newer 15+ rack PN that superseded the last one(s) fixes the weak/potential leak points, hoping someone can speak on this. I might just go with the 15+ rack because I doubt anyone is actually going to know about the newer racks, plus they're $300+ more.

Also while on the topic of saving money; after reading every page of this thread it seems like my 04 pump may not be up to par for the 15+ rack, plus both my oem rack and pump are leaking pretty bad. I like the idea of installing the 08+ pump and have the correct bracket, but they are $500+. Rebuild kits for my pump are like $30... Curious on your guys' thoughts on rebuilding the 04 ps pump, running a cooler, and calling it a day. Just a street car as well.

IMHO, Subaru engineers spec'd a different pump for a reason, so I would run as close to their setup as possible. People can and have used their stock pumps with the newer rack, but most people aren't OEM engineers and probably won't even own the car two years from now...

As to your comment about just being a street car, if it is indeed just that, I wouldn't bother with the 15+ rack. Just get a 2001-2004 LHD STI rack (bolt-in, little bit faster ratio). This is a boat-load of work and the modification introduces more failure points than the factory system has. Save your money and fix your leaks instead.

Yeh, I'm no stranger to a boat load of work with this car. Its not a daily driver. The street car comment was aimed at comparing the failures outlined in this previous comments of this thread of heavy track use causing the original GD pumps to fail.

As far as the racks go I've been unable to pull any info up on the newer ones. I'll just go with the 15+ and rebuild the 04 pump. Currently pulling the trans & front subframe. Will report back with progress...

I burned through two MY05 pumps before just going with a 15+ pump for my faster rack.

The older pump mount can be made to work with some routing out of the mounting holes and spacers.

I was also able to make the original power steering lines work with some weird routing, but there is a lot of wobble when the motor goes off-power, so I wonder if that would be fixed by using 15+ power steering lines.

If I were to do it again I would just grab all the 15+ stuff to reduce the amount of fab and problems to solve
