utec engine-kill map
question :
last night i left my car (sti) parked in a garage and apparently i left the map selector on '7'- the map that completely disables the engine (flashing CEL, no start). apparently, they had to move my car and couldn't figure it out, so it seems they connected the terminals together under the steering column (puts it in some type of test mode - same as when you flash the ecu with an AP). i disconnected them. After starting the car, i now have a nice flashing cruise light all the way back from NY to CT. the car drives fine, but i'm curious as to why it would cause this... what exactly does the immobilize map do (no fuel? no spark? dumps fuel?) anyhow, i did a good ol' fashioned neg-terminal disconnect reset. flashing cruise is gone (hopefully for good). i searched and found that the flashing cruise could be an O2 sensor code. any ideas? many thanks in advance. eric

You could get the code pulled at Autozone and see what it was/is......and if it dosen't come back....all's good....

thanks for the reply, i think i will take it over to my mechanic and see if there is still a code to read. i'm just curious as to what in that immobilizer map could cause a cel/flashing cruise to be triggered. hmmmm.

The security map disables both fuel and ignition. i.e. no fuel and no spark.

so, just had the codes pulled:
o2 sensor (low temp?) rear then o2 sensor, front ***? could something like cranking my car while in 'kill mode' ruin my o2 sensor(s)? any advice o2 sensor gurus? are these critical when using a utec? thanks again. |

The front O2 sensor is the most critical piece of drivability equipment on your car. Seriously. It will not drive riht without it, and you would KNOW if it was shot badly, as you would be in limp mode.
The rear is an emissions tool. Perhaps they cranked the car for a very long time in kill mode, and the UTEC blocks the O2 sensor outputs to the ECU in security mode. Clear the codes, and then just see if they come back. If they don't, like Scotty said, it's no harm, no foul. -Sean |

my only concern is the flashing cruise. i have reset the code once with a battery disconnect, then again with the OBD scanner. came back both times. BTW I have a PEP MIL eliminator on the rear sensor, not sure if it makes a difference. should i replace the sensor? that light is disconcerting... |
